63. Recumbent Cycle History
the bicycle, there was a lot of resistance to the new recumbent design, both first developed in the 1880 s, retained its dominance over all forms of cycling.
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Recumbent_Dennis/history.htm
A Brief History of the Recumbent Cycle
At any speed above 15 mph the rider of a conventional bicycle expends 80% of his or her energy simply displacing the air in front of them, so, obviously, if a designer can find a way to reduce this drag then the machine will travel faster for the same energy input or else the rider can expend less energy in attaining any given speed. Unfortunately for the development of the bicycle, there was a lot of resistance to the new recumbent design, both from the other professional riders and from the established manufacturers. In 1938 cycle racing's governing body the UCI wrote a set of design rules for racing bicycles which outlawed any form of reclining riding position. Thus the diamond frame, or 'safety' bicycle, first developed in the 1880's, retained its dominance over all forms of cycling. The revival of the recumbent idea began in California in the mid 1970's when Chester Kyle and Jack Lambie formed the International Human Powered Vehicle Association (IHPVA), whose aim was to develop better forms of human-powered transport, faster, safer and more comfortable and convenient than the traditional type. Very quickly, new types of fully-faired bicycles and tricycles set a complete range of speed records, recently reaching almost 70 m.p.h. over 200 metres and nearly 50 miles in an hour. It is interesting to note that the one hour record for a DIAMOND frame is only about 36 miles and Andy Wilkinson, a Wirral UK based cyclist has in recent times broken several long distance records including the End to End (Land's End to John O' Groats) riding a recumbent tricycle.

Cycling around the world Hi There! Welcome to bentrein.com. On this site you can find the story about my recumbent bicycle tour around the world. I was born on the 29th of March in Ophemert, a village in Holland. Between June 1998 and March 2001 I traveled around the world on my Holland made recumbent bicycle. It's been an exciting trip through 19 countries, and 3 continents. Zen's favorite picture of me, and my favorite picture of Zen. It's been an exciting trip and I am proud to be able to share my story with you. I have translated all the text into English - I wrote it originally in Dutch. Finally it's done! On January 13th I put the last pictures of my travel story online, and integrated them into the site. Now at least 98% of the pictures ever to come online about my trip are visible. When I get to Holland again, I'll be working on re-scanning some pictures, and for some places where I found I didn't have enough pictures I will scan some extra. Also the next thing I want to add is a short essay I wrote - of course also with pictures - about coming home, and being at home after such a long trip. But all this will have to wait until after my wedding-trip to Holland, in April/May this year. The website of Treins First - my football team in Hattrick - is being updated as well. Do check it out, and please give comments! Or better even, also start playing

http://www.newsearching.com/stationarybikes/stationarybikes.html
Stationary Bike Buying Guide
Stationary bikes are great machines designed to offer a great cardio lower-body workout. They are very easy to learn and offer a great aerobic exercise. The cycling motion in natural for most people. With your own stationary bikeyou can get a health-club quality workout burning fat and improving heart fitness even in bad weather. Two major types of stationary bikes are upright and recumbent.Upright type looks like a regular bike, while a recumbent bike reclines at an angle. Most recumbent bikes offer bucket seats and cushioned back support. They are reportedto lessen strain on knees and lower back and keep blood pressure lower than upright bikes. However, on the upright model more intensity can be achieved by periodically leaving the seat. Some also argue that recumbent models encourage a less intense workout. A great advantage of stationary bikes over other fitness equipment is that it is very easy to read while cycling, because you are already sitting with your hands free and not moving up and down like you would on a treadmill. Compared to running, a stationary bike provides users with a thorough low-impact workout that creates less stress on joints. On higher-end models, look for additional options like a heart-rate monitor. It will allow you to pace your workout so that you stay in optimal fat burning or cardio zone. Stationary bikes are generally quite inexpensive. They are also very durable and require only minor maintenance. Remember to adjust the seat so that your knees are slightly bentwhen your foot is at the bottom of the stroke. Wear comfortable clothing that allows your lower body to move freelyand a good pair of athletic shoes that provide you with support and a good fit.Remeber to warm up and cool down slowly.
