Peterson, University of Maine Jeffrey Broker, United States Olympic Training Center Peak Power Output in Recumbent Cycling Recent interest in recumbent cycling has been the result of interest in the human powered land speed record as well as the serving a special needs population with recumbent trainers. The two situations where you see the recumbent cycling position used extensive is in human powered land speed records where it is used because of the aerodynamic benefits and in health clubs and home gyms where recumbent trainers have become quite popular. This work has been done to date at Colorado State University. Raoul Reiser, Ph.D. candidate in the Mechanical Engineering Department has performed the most extensive investigations to date of the effect of cycling position on peak power output. PICTURES of Raoul's System Bicycle Engineering The bicycle is one of the most complex simple machines we encounter. As technological sophistication becomes one of the stronger selling points for bicycles, this effect only increases. Because of both the familiarity and the complexity of the bicycle as a machine, the design classes can use the bicycle as their design koan . The tradition of this approach is long, as evidenced by the existence of books such as Bicycles and Tricycles by Sharp published by Longmans in 1896 and reprinted by MIT Press as a result of work by David G. Wilson.

THE PROBLEM The basic problem with most of todays personal transport options is one thing - MASS. Every day 66% of car journeys under 6 km in distance are taken by just one person. This seems incredible especially when drawn to the fact that the driver only makes up 5-10% of the total mass being transported! So why do we use a 1500kg machine to transport one person such short distances? Is it for convenience sake? It makes as much sense as using a pile driver to crack open a nut! Urban traffic in most large citys (and lots of smaller ones) is being reduced to a crawl, main roads and arterial routes are choked the problem just seems to get bigger, traveling times get longer, parking becomes a nightmare, pollution increases. My vision is a response to these and other problems, I wish to see a more balanced and sustainable approach to personal transport. A vehicle not to replace the automobile but to compliment it, a vehicle practical enough to use everyday.
