88. The History Of Tennis
real tennis. Early French players would begin a game by shouting tenez ie Play! and the game soon became known as Royal, or real tennis.
http://www.cliffrichardtennis.org/planet_tennis/history.htm
Here can you read all about the fascinating history of tennis, from it's ancient beginnings in 1500BC, to the International sport which it has become today.
Ancient Beginnings Ball games can be traced back to ancient times and the earliest representations can be found in carvings in Egyptian temples dating from 1500BC. The Ancient Egyptians and the people that followed actually played ball games as part of their religious ceremonies. These traditions and the whole concept of the ball game spread into Europe in the 8th century, the influence spread by the Moors whose Empire reached into Southern France. As strange as it may seem, it was the meeting of this eastern culture with Christianity which eventually gave rise to tennis! Christian Monks became interested in the religious rites of the Moors and were the first Europeans to play the ball game that was to become tennis. The earliest version of the game was called 'La Soule' where players would hit a ball to each other using either their hands or a stick. The game became very popular in Monasteries all over Europe, so much so that the Church of the day even considered prohibiting the game!

Words by Oliver Rowland
A game of tennis where brain beats brawn
REAL tennis was a hit with medieval monks and kings and is taking off again as a modern sport. Known as royal tennis in Australia, Real Tennis is the prototype of the modern game of lawn tennis, and is described by fans as a mixture between tennis, squash and chess.
Real tennis is said to have started in medieval monasteries in France and Italy, when monks would hit a ball around the cloisters using their hands.
As it grew in popularity rules became more standardised, and the monks enjoyed it so much a spoilsport Pope decided to ban it.
By the 14th century the game had moved from the monasteries into noblemen's castles and was popular with royalty throughout the Tudor and Stuart periods.
In fact Henry VIII was such a fan that many of his financial problems were caused by huge wagers on Real Tennis games, and James I died because of it. Trying to escape assassins by hiding down a drain, he found it blocked with real tennis balls.
It game fell from grace in the 18th century, but has picked up again since Victorian times and about 10,000 people now play worldwide.

Fahey Does it Again ... Was More Focused than Chisholm ...
Speical Report, May 21, 2004 Martin Bronstein, writing live from Newport Rhode Island
Dear Readers: Normally, SquashTalk stays very focused on the sport of squash and nothing else, but we couldn't resist this rare opportunity to report on the world championships of Real Tennis, with SquashTalk correspondent on the scene as only one of 85 individuals priviledged to view these championships live - the editor SECOND (AND LAST) DAY, MAY 20 2004, NATIONAL TENNIS CENTER, NEWPORT read first day's report World champion Rob Fahey of Australia repelled the challenge of American Tim Chisholm to retain his title and prove yet once again that he is the best - mentally and physically - player in the world today. Although Chisholm started the second day with tremendous confidence and attack, totally dominating Fahey in winning the first set 6-4,the reality is that he lost 7-1 over the two days, which was a true reflection of the difference between the two players.

Playing Tennis in the Zone, the Parallel Mode Process
If you have played the game for any length of time, you have probably been in the zone a few times. It is a remarkable experience. Remember the surety with which you struck the ball and how every part of your game seemed to come together into a unified whole. But also remember how difficult it was to regain that feeling the next time you went out to play. In this new series, Scott Ford will show you how to reproduce your peak performance state every time you walk onto the court. How to Become a Successful League Team Many players avoid joining a USTA team because of the backbiting, politics, and favoritism that sometimes exist. Few things in sports are as devastating as innocent and excited expectations crushed by the insensitive or ill-informed behavior of a captain or coach. Pat Blaskower shows you how to produce an entire team of very happy and productive contributors. Anticipation and Footwork How do the pros make the game look so easy to run? How do they manage to always be in the right place at the right time? The answer is they anticipate the next shot, and they are never flat-footed while the point is in play. Understanding your opponent's next possible shot will help you get to the ball early and help neutralize an attack or force him into a defensive plan. Learn to do this and you too can make the game look easy. Mental Toughness for Doubles Much of the information about mental toughness in tennis is directed at singles play. That's okay except there is an army of doubles players out there who could benefit from this information.
