Liverpool 2-0 Boro
Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has told his players they are the masters of their own Champions League destiny after they beat Middlesbrough.
"I told the players 'it is yours to win now', win two more games and we are there," said the Frenchman. "We have been fourth for a long time now and we will give every single last drop of blood and sweat to keep it." He added: "The reason when we were two up that we dropped deeper was to make sure we kept the result." Liverpool still hold the coveted fourth and final Champions League spot but Aston Villa are breathing down their necks as they trail by just one point. Newcastle are three points adrift but have a game in hand. Houllier said: "We have beaten a very good team in Boro, and that enhances our result.

Rallying against the leader
As the presidential elections in Algeria enter their final phase, criticism of Bouteflika is growing. Yet the incumbent's chances of winning seem untainted, writes Amira Howeidy The 8 April presidential elections in Algeria come at a critical moment in the Arab world. "Reform" dominates official discourse yet remains the biggest challenge to Arab regimes. Algeria is no exception, and its approaching elections are viewed by observers as a microcosm of the impact of reform "from within" in a region dominated by totalitarian regimes. For one thing, Algerian President Abdel-Aziz Bouteflika is not running alone. He is competing with five other candidates who appear conveniently representative of the Algerian political and social spectrum. They include an Islamist, Abdallah Gaballah, head of the Islah Party; a woman, Louisa Hanoun, spokesperson for the left-wing Workers' Party; and a Berber leader, Said Saadi head of the Rally for Culture and Democracy (RCD) Party. Technically, these four, in addition to former prime minister under Bouteflika, Ali Ben Flis, secretary-general of the ruling National Liberation Front (FLN) and Ali-Fawzi Rebaine, head of the nationalist party Ahd 54, were the only candidates who qualified under the strict conditions of the presidential electoral law. According to this law, candidates are required to collect 75,000 signatures in 25 of Algeria's 48 provinces, with a minimum of 1,500 from each one.

Rallying for Galloway
The Press Syndicate and the Bar Association have decided to launch a campaign in solidarity with beleaguered British MP George Galloway. Gamal Essam El-Din reports
George Galloway Addressing a symposium organised by the Press Syndicate's Cultural Committee on 11 May, British Socialist Workers Party leader John Reese, the symposium's guest of honour, said he was pleased by the fact that British MP George Galloway is as popular as he is in Egypt and the Arab world. "You must have followed the campaign of mendacity which has been launched against Galloway," Reese said, referring to the hostile campaign launched by the British press on 23 April against the long-time British Labour Party MP renowned for his unrelenting support for Arab causes in Palestine and Iraq. Reese assured the audience that "the pillars of democracy in England are strong enough to expose the falseness of this malicious campaign."

Thousands in D.C. protest Iraq policy
by Robert Gutsche Jr
WASHINGTON An Air Force sergeant who said the United States has misused the U.S. troops in an "unjustified war" in Iraq was one of thousands of people who rallied on the National Mall yesterday to demand an immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops in Iraq. "I think there is a lot of sentiment inside the military that what we are doing isn't right," said the sergeant, who said he was 30 but asked not to be further identified. "Technically and legally we did sign up for this, and it's our responsibility to fill what our responsibilities are, but the people making the decisions also need to use us as a last resort."
Protesters hang a large banner from the window of a downtown office building, during an anti-war demonstration in Washington, October 25, 2003. Thousands rallied in Washington on Saturday to protest against U.S. policy in Iraq, the first major demonstration since President George W. Bush declared an end to major combat in the war on Iraq. By noon, more than 30,000 people had gathered near the Washington Monument, according to an estimate by Newsday. Organizers said about 100,000 people squeezed through city streets during the three-hour march. Police didn't report any arrests by early yesterday evening.

E-Mail This Article Published on Monday, June 9, 2003 by the Baltimore Sun Rallying the Left by Jules Witcover WASHINGTON - Liberal America in exile stirred up a verbal storm against both President Bush and Democratic centrists here last week in a three-day conference to "take back America," as the sponsoring progressive group, Campaign for America's Future, put it. Seven of the nine declared candidates for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination addressed the estimated 1,500 attendees in what may have been the largest and most boisterous gathering of the party's left wing in three decades or more. Over the three days, more than 120 speakers and panelists drawn from Congress, organized labor, academia and a host of traditional and Internet grass-roots organizations made forceful arguments for confronting the Bush administration head-on. In the process, they explicitly or implicitly also took on the party's major centrist organization, the Democratic Leadership Council, elaborating on criticism that the centrists offer the voters "Bush Lite" instead of a clear-cut contrast with the Republican Party. Several of the presidential aspirants, notably including former Gov. Howard Dean of Vermont and Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, trotted out the standard liberal line that the last thing the country needs is two Republican parties. The way to get elected in 2004, Mr. Dean said, "is not to be like the Republicans. The way to win is to stand up to them and fight."

Arbogast Hamlin REDMOND, Wash., April 28, 2003 Between all the pitches and the promises, the cure-alls and the come-ons, spam is making it harder and harder to communicate via e-mail. But the technology industry is getting tough right back. Fed up with spam, some of the top providers of Internet services today are rallying against what's officially known as "unsolicited commercial e-mail" by joining forces to curb it. Microsoft, AOL and Yahoo are in agreement that eradicating spam will require a collective, industry-wide approach. To learn more about this agreement and what's behind the effort, PressPass talked to two people at Microsoft who've been working actively on the anti-spam front: Brian Arbogast , corporate vice president in Microsoft's MSN and Personal Services Division (and the executive sponsor for the privacy pillar of the company's Trustworthy Computing initiative), and Ryan Hamlin , general manager of Microsoft's Anti-Spam Technology and Strategy Group.

What´s a beautiful car like you
Winning rallies, what else? In this case it´s the East African Safari, considered the world´s roughest test of a stock car. Cars have to plow through hub-deep mud, dodge angry elephants and smash through underbrush to finish the tortuous 3000-mile course. And very few do finish. In the 1965 Safari, for example, only 16 out of 85 cars finished - five of them Peugeots! 21 out of 94 starting cars managed to cross the finish line in 1964 - six of them Peugeots! And the year before that 7 out of 84 finished - three of them Peugeots!
