In 1908 Sears and Roebuck offered a railbike attachment in its catalog designed to adapt the common bicycle for railbike use. In the late 1800's several railbike models were available commercially and were used by the general public as well as by telegraph and railroad company employees. Today railbiking is alive and well but has been called the world's slowest growing sport. In Europe, dozens of locations offer railbikes for rent on abandoned track now dedicated to recreational railbike use. One of the goals of Railbike International is to establish dedicated railbike facilities in the United States similar to those in Europe.

Railbiking in Belgium Once upon a time, there was a railway line number 150, which linked Tamines with Jemelle via Dinant (Belgium). It was one of the many railways in the Sambre-Meuse region of the belgian Ardennes. Recently, the part Ermeton-sur-Biert/Anhee (operational between 1890 and 1960), has become alive again. From 1 July 1995 (hopefully), it will now possible to reach Warnant, another 4 km beyond Denee-Maredsous in the direction of Yvoir. There you'll find a former rail yard, with a connection to a former 1 metre gauge track! The completely preserved station is now used to breed snails. At the other side of the tracks, you'll find a restaurant where you can taste these delicious little creatures, prepared according to the best belgian gastronomical traditions. The line to Warnant offers some fantastic panoramic views to the railbikers. You'll pass along the fabulous ruins of Montaigle, cross several bridges, and even drive through two tunnels. There are 25 railbikes for rent. It's advisable to book ahead, because the demand tends to be big, especially on weekends and holidays. Unfortunately it is impossible to reach Warnant or Falaen by train. The closest SNCB station is Yvoir, on the main InterCity line Blankenberge-Bruges-Ghent-Brussels-Namur-Dinant (hourly services). From Yvoir you can walk (very nice in the summer and in the automn) along the abandonned railway line to Falaen. If you come out of the station of Yvoir, turn to the left, follow the Meuse until you reach the bridge and cross it (careful, the traffic is very dangerous). Take the road left, and immediately right (downhill, direction "Maredsous"). After a short time, you'll be at a level crossing of a clearly abandonned line. Follow that track to the right. After 2 km or so, you'll be at Warnant, which will be a starting point after 1 July (hopefully). Until then, continue 4 km further until Falaen, where you can start your bike trip. From Yvoir to Falaen, I walked for exactly 2 hours! It's beautiful, but tiring trip along the tracks.

A Brief History of Railbiking Research shows that railbiking has been around nearly as long as railroads and bicycles. A railbike patent in the U.S. Patent Office database is dated 1869. Scores of patents for railbike systems were filed between 1880 and 1920 around the world. Railbikes were once used by railroad companies for track checking, moving workers at work sites as well as going for assistance when the locomotives broke down. Telegraph companies also used railbikes to maintain telegraph lines that often followed railways. In the Midwest and other regions with sufficient winds, workers using railbikes sometimes put up sails to power them along the tracks. Like its contemporary, the bicycle, railbike design went into decline with the advent of the internal combustion engine and the automobile. A few independently minded designers and tinkerers kept the concept alive for the last 90 years and today there is a resurgence of interest in railbiking.
