Dictionary Definition of Racewalking

Racewalking is a form of walking where the participants swivels and tilt their hips to lengthen their strides. It is distinguished from running by the requirement that at any time at least one foot has contact with the ground. Speeds often equal those of slow runners. In competition, racewalkers are expected to maintain good form and are penalized for bending the knee as it passes under the body or having no foot-to-ground contact. It is a Summer Olympic sport. Fitness-wise, mile for mile, it is said to be equal in caloric output to running. Home Alphabetical Index See our sister sites: Find a Resume Diplomat City Your Quotations Your Lookup ... Racewalking So ... Why Not Just Run? R acewalking provides ALL of the cardiovascular benefits of running. Just as a runner can jog or sprint, a racewalker can walk at any speed - maintaining any heart rate up to his or her maximum. But racewalkers enjoy certain advantages over runners.
Racewalkers get a much better upper-body workout than most runners because of the accentuated use of the back, shoulders and arms.
Racewalking is much less injury prone than running. Because of the smooth and fluid stride, the body lands with much less force than in running resulting in less pounding on the feet, legs, knees, hips and back. Because of an erect posture, racewalkers rarely encounter back problems. The prospect of fewer injuries brings many runners into racewalking, allowing them to extend their fitness programs and competitive careers well into their golden years.
Remember . . . you do not have to race to racewalk!

http://www.day-spas.org/alternative-health-care/racewalking.html
Day Spas Aesthetics Alternative Health Care Diet ... Workout / Training Racewalking What is race walking? Race Walking is exactly what it sounds like—fast walking. The International Association of Athletic Federations defines racewalking as “a progression of steps so taken that the walker makes contact with the ground, so that no visible (to the human eye) loss of contact occurs. The advancing leg shall be straightened (i.e. not bent at the knee) from the moment of first contact with the ground until the vertical upright position.” In other words, in racewalking, the walker must be in constant contact with the ground. If, during a race, the walker loses contact with the ground, he or she risks being disqualified. Once your feet lose contact with the ground Today, racewalking is popular because it’s cheap (well, actually, free) and easy: just open the door, step outside and walk! Walking can be enjoyed by young and old, fast and slow, beginner and experienced alike. Racewalking appears as a competitive sport in all major competitions, including the Olympic Games, the World Championships, Continental Championships, and the Commonwealth Games. There are also World and Continental Cups and Championships devoted solely to racewalking.

    Portland Marathon Report
    October 2000
I think my fingers are the only part of me that isn't hurting at the moment! I wanted to let you know how we faired at Portland Marathon this weekend. Linda Campbell was the first female racewalk finisher and the second racewalker overall, male or female, in a time of 4:51. She won the Master Women's Division. Jacquie Hughes was 5th in the Master Women's Racewalk Division in a time of 5:44. Paola Rodriquez-Ruah finished in 6th place in the Open Women Division in a time of 5:58. The Master of Ceremonies described racewalking a marathon to the mostly running crowd: "that while you might not understand or comprehend how or why they racewalk, try to imagine participating in a marathon knowing that you are being judged the whole way. You must keep going at your top pace, you cannot not walk or run to give you muscles a change, and that at mile 23 you could be told you are disqualified and it is all for naught."
