RWI's 2004 MYTHICAL RACE WALKING CHAMPIONSHIP
by Paul Smith
While Tim Seaman celebrated two American record setting performances in Copenhagen, Curt Clausen fattened his lead in RWI's 2004 Mythical Race Walking Championship with a victory in the men's USATF National 2-Hour Walk Championships in Kenosha, WI, today. Seaman smashed the USATF road records by Tim Lewis in the 15 and 20K. Seaman is now the record holder at distances from 5 to 20K on the track and on the road if ratified by USATF at its December 2004 convention...

RACEWALKING
Do you feel the need for speed Racewalking may be your answer. Although racewalking is a technique that can be used at any walking speed it is generally used by walkers to increase their speed and endurance.
Racewalking is a progression of steps so taken that the walker makes contact with the ground so that no visible (to the human eye) loss of contact occurs.
This is what differentiates racewalking from running. It means that there is a moment when the heal of the front foot and the toe of the rear foot appear to be in contact with the ground at the same time. Before the racewalker takes the rear foot off the ground, their front heel must make contact with the ground. Contact with the ground appears (to the human eye) to be maintained at all times. The advancing leg must be straightened (i.e., not bent at the knee) from the moment of first contact with the ground until in the vertical position. This differentiates racewalking from other forms of walking. It does not mean that your legs are straight at all times. The rule is that the knee should be straight when the heel strikes the ground. It must remain straight until it passes under the body. Then the knee bends and swings forward taking the next step.

Racewalking Books Many Walking Club members enjoy competing in races - local races, national races and races in other countries, races that include a judged racewalk and races that don't. Not all racewalkers race! Many have never entered a competition, and have no desire to do so. However, many of us enjoy participating in races - some participate in a select few races each year, some do every race with a judged racewalk, some do any and all races they hear about. Participating in races gives us a good reason to keep walking each week whether we are in the mood or not. Racing makes us pay attention to our training, and helps us get more fit. That doesn't mean we all plan to win a trophy! We just enjoy being there, seeing friends, making it to the finish line, getting that tee-shirt. Read some of the stories about racewalking in races. You may be inspired to give it a try, or maybe not. But I think you'll be inspired, regardless.

OVERVIEW OF RACEWALKING

Racewalking is an athletics event in which the object is simply to walk fast. The sport has been around for about 400 years, has been in the Olympics since 1908, and is literally the precursor of modern long-distance running. (See the history of racewalking page.)
THE TWO RULES OF RACEWALKING
There are two technical rules in racewalking. In simple terms, to be legal, a racewalker must
1. maintain contact with the ground at all times, and
2. keep the knee of the supporting leg straight from the moment of
foot contact with the ground until the leg passes under the body

During walking races, certified judges position themselves on the race course to observe the racewalkers. When, in the opinion of three different judges, a walker violates either of these two rules, the walker is disqualified and removed from the race. ( It is important to note that judging is "by the human eye" and not by video camera . Cameras often catch top racewalkers off the ground, but it must be for such a short period of time that it can not be seen by the human eye.)
