Indoor Quoits
Early Quoits
Quoits has is related to another early pub game, the throwing of horseshoes at a pin in the ground. Some theories have it that Quoits developed from Horseshoe pitching as a formalised version of the sport. Horseshoe pitching is still played today, notably in certain regions of the USA, the rules being similar to those of the Northern Quoits game outlined below. The theory espoused by Peter Brown, President of the National Quoits Association is just the opposite. A quoit in ancient times was synonymous with a discus, and so he thinks that Quoits and discus are one and the same thing and that Quoits was therefore one of the sports played at the first Greek Olympiad. He also suggests that the Greeks passed on Quoits, a weapon of war, to the Romans who also brought the game to Britain and that the origins may go back even further to the Minoan empire c.2000B.C. where the boy king of Knossos apparently used the discus/quoit to cull escaping slaves. Horseshoe pitching in this case came about as a poor-man's version of Quoits using left-over horseshoes instead of the real thing. Whatever the origin, the game was certainly being played in England early in the second millennium in roughly the form known today wherein metal rings are thrown up and down a pitch with target pins at either end embedded in areas of soft clay. It seems to have been associated with agricultural and working class people, in particular with the mining industry. Quoits of this era generally were made from poor-quality left over metal from mine forges and this is why main areas of quoit playing seem to have centred around mining communities.

We publish free game rules in order to promote game playing around the world. To find out more, visit the website www.mastersgames.com or email custserv@mastersgames.com Masters Traditional Games . The on the Masters Traditional Games website applies. Steel quoits is a game probably derived from the ancient martial sport of Discus throwing. Being a traditional pub game without any national or international governing body, variations of equipment and rules abound. Where there is doubt, the locally played rules should always apply. These rules are merely this author's interpretation of the most popular and traditional games being played today as follows: the venerable Long Game as played in Scotland and Wales, the East Anglian game now confined to tiny pockets around North Suffolk, the traditional Northern game played in the North of England. Also included are the more modern adaptations Slate bed quoits from Pennsylvania, USA, Deck Quoits born in the 1930s and Sward Quoits included for people who wish to play Quoits informally in their garden or elsewhere outdoors. These rules are comprehensive instructions for friendly play. They are not a complete set of standard regulations encompassing all situations that might be encountered.

Steel Quoits
It doesn't come more traditional than this. Forget your rope rings and rubber quoits; these are the genuine article. The ancient game of Quoits has been played for centuries in Scotland, Wales and England, and its ancestor was played in the first Olympic Games. These heavy steel rings are designed to be thrown 11 or 18 yards into traditional clay pits at a stake buried in the ground. Quoits is clearly not a game for wimps and when you pick up your first quoit and feel the solid weight, it is easy to understand that quoits were originally weapons of war and hunting. The quoits sold here are made in the traditional way from mild steel. Each has been drop-forged and pressed in Cleveland (the heart of quoiting England) using traditional tools that have produced quoits for decades. The blacksmith sands each quoit and buffs using a wire wheel to produce an even surface. Quoits are shaped in the classic style with a slightly concave bottom (beware of non-traditional imitations with flat undersides).
The standard dimensions are 8 1/2 inches outside diameter, 5 1/2 inch hole and 5 1/4 pounds (2.4kg) in weight. Two slightly ligher versions are available. We may be able to source a much heavier celtic quoit weighing about 9 pounds with a 4 inch hole designed for the Scottish and Welsh game - please

Greek athletes enjoyed the game where it was a sport to throw a discus. Later the game evolved from distance to accuracy and stakes were added. Quoits became very popular among the English Noblemen. British solders played the game of Quoits while in America during the American Revolutionary War. The British and American solders used it to pass the time. The common man couldn’t afford to have a set of Quoits made and so horseshoes became the next best thing.
The game is made up of two stakes and four rings which are called hobs. It can be played with two players and each player will receive two rings to toss from one end of the play area. Once they have tossed from one end, the score will be tallied and then the rings will be toss back from the opposite end. If you have four players, teammates are at opposite ends of the court and where they remain the whole game. The stakes are set about 18 - 20 feet apart. Scoring varies by whose version you play. If the hob is only one ring away, you receive one point. For a leaner or hobber you receive two points. If you throw a ringer you receive three points and if the other team throws a ringer on top of yours they receive points for your ringer and theirs.
Quoits tournaments take place throughout the United States and in Canada. At Fun-Attic Sports and Toys we carry Muckers, which is rubber version of the steel Quoits. The rubber version has become very popular because it is constructed for all ages. Young children starting out will not cut up their hands from sharp steel edges. The more experienced players will appreciate the feel of the weighted natural rubber rings. To find out more, be sure to visit our

Chun Quoit
Lanyon Quoit There a number of Quoits in the region of West Cornwall. The term Quoit seems local to Cornwall, similar monuments are known as dolmens or cromlechs elsewhere. These monuments are Neolithic and were originally covered by earthen mounds, which have eroded through time. Chun Quiot sits close to Chun Castle, an Iron Age hillfort. This fort commands a very powerful defensive position in open moorland and was very heavily fortified by stone ramparts. On excavation in the 1920's evidence was found of a smelting furnace, showing that tin has been an important Cornish commodity for at least three thousand years. Chun Quoit is regarded as one of the finest such monuments, but Lanyon Quoit is just as impressive with its huge capstone. It almost looks like a small giant's table. The fact that it was rebuilt in its present form in the nineteenth century does not diminish its appearance. At the time of this rebuilding a collection of jumbled stones was found at the south of where the large mound had been. These were thought to be the remains of an earlier burial. The capstone stands 2m high and is 5m in length. Home Cornwall Scotland Glossary ... Site map

Please see the full Quoits page for the full history of outdoor Quoits from which the Indoor game derives.
Indoor Quoits
While two versions of Outdoor Quoits have managed to make it through the trials of the late 20th century, an indoor version of the game has also managed to thrive around the debatable border between Wales and England. It is most popular in pubs around Powys and Evesham on the Welsh side of the border but also in Gloucestershire, Worcester and Hereford in England. The history of Indoor Quoits, Evesham Quoits, Table Quoits or Dobbers is not at all clear but the best guess seems to be that somebody decided to invent an indoor version of the outdoor game towards the end of the nineteenth century. The board shown is from the author's collection and was bought from Masters Traditional Games The game is a cleverly miniaturised version of the outdoor game. It uses rubber rings and to make up for their lack of shape, one side is coloured black, the other white and any quoit which falls black side up, doesn't score. The Quoits board is 3 feet square with a central stake and two indented concentric rings. The scores of the stake, and the two rings vary according to the location and the game being played - rather like Darts, it seems that more than one game is played using the same equipment. The standard game would just be a straight race to the final score of 61 points (scored on a cribbage board) but, in Powys particularly, an interesting variant using a special scoreboard is popular, in which each number up to 13 can only be scored once by the first player who manages to score that number in a turn.

STARTING A GAME:
  • The height of hub from the surface should be 2 1/2" - 3". A helpful guideline is to stack all four quoits on top of the hub. The tip of the hub should then come to the top of the fourth quoit. Pitching distance should be 18 feet from Hub to Hub. Slightly angle the hubs toward each other at a 70 degree angle from the ground. The start of play is determined by the flip of a coin. A quoit can also be used instead of a coin with heads as the letter side of the quoit up. One-on-one - You pitch from the same side of the hub when you travel to the opposing hub. Non-diagonally. (see D1 below) . The scoring player pitches first in the following inning. Two-on-two (a.k.a. couples or doubles)
