Main Page See live article Alphabetical index Professional wrestling Professional wrestling is a form of entertainment where the participants engage in simulated wrestling matches for means of entertainment. In its purported rules and competitions, it apes the convention of sport . In its earlier history, professional wrestling promoters and performers claimed that the competition was real, and varying fractions of the audience have believed this to be the case. Any pretence to be a sporting competition was dropped in the 1990s, when Vince McMahon 's WWF wrestling organisation began describing its events as "sports entertainment". The simulated nature of professional wrestling is only one of the many differences it has with traditional wrestling mixed martial arts competitions, where the tapout has always been accepted, in the mid-1990s. A count out happens when a wrestler is out of the ring long enough for the referee to count to 10. Conditions for disqualification will be explained later. If one or both of the wrestlers are lying on the mat and not moving, the referee may issue a ten count. A wrestler not reaching his feet, and thus answering the count, will be deemed to have lost. If neither wrestler reaches their feet, it is considered a draw. If either wrestler is in contact with the ropes, all contact between the wrestlers must be broken. This strategy is used very often in order to escape from a submission hold, and also, more seldomly, a wrestler can place his foot on the ropes to avoid losing by pin fall.

Pro wrestling is the most popular programming on cable television—more popular than news, sports, drama, comedy, home shopping, cartoons, and soap operas. The World Wrestling Federation (WWF), developed by controversial wrestling promoter Vince McMahon, has several top-rated cable television wrestling programs seen by more than 7 million viewers each week. On March 23, 2001, the WWF purchased its rival organization, World Championship Wrestling (WCW), now maintaining what some claim is a virtual monopoly over pro wrestling programming. WWF home video sales routinely rank first in sports video, and its action figures outsold Pokemon in 1999. WWF websites consistently rank in the top ten when counted among established sport sites such as ESPN.com, and they are the first nonpornographic sites to turn streaming video into profits. The stock market values the family-owned WWF at more than $1 billion. The current popularity of pro wrestling is largely the fruit of Mc- Mahon’s labors. During the 1980s McMahon began to consolidate the country’s regional wrestling organizations, which were relatively small and obscure, into a national federation, the WWF. He also began to incorporate elements of popular culture, such as rock and roll music and special effects, into wrestling programs. McMahon officially proclaimed what fans had known for years, wrestling was not “real,” but “sports entertainment.” He developed complex behind-the-scenes sagas that combined action-adventure with soap opera story lines filled with sex and intrigue. The story lines star his own family as well as the larger-than-life wrestlers themselves.

Professional wrestling on TV Professional wrestling no longer has a cult following: the sports entertainment business has now become a household item. No longer are the days when professional wrestling fans are labeled as deficient in education or economy as almost everyone follows wrestling. bodyOffer(3905) The boom in popularity has prompted wrestling organizations to push the envelope in an effort to stay competitive in the all important ratings war. The sports entertainment companies know that they have the attention of the viewers at home and the last thing they want is to bore them. However, some viewers now question the content that has recently been aired on television shows. Opposition has grown against content such as scantaly clad women showing too much skin and wrestling matches that are considered too violent. The question of "just how far is too far" was further pushed after the death of wrestler Owen Hart and the paralyzing accident of Darren Drozdov. Hart died after suffering a fall from more than fifty feet while trying to execute an exciting ring entrance from the ceiling of Kemper Arena. Drozdov lost all of the feeling in his upper and lower extremities after falling awkwardly on his head while another wrestler performed a high risk maneuver. Drozdov would later gain feeling in his upper extremities after hours of surgery, but doctors would say that his career was over. No longer are the days when wrestlers had normal matches. Now there are Ladder, Casket, Hardcore, Hell in a Cell, and even Inferno matches in professional wrestling events. Hardcore style matches have ignited the beginnings and realization of several "backyard wrestling leagues". These are semi-organized groups, mostly consisting of non-adults, using objects such as cheese graters -among other things- to draw blood from one another. Some of the participants have even taken to the skies by jumping off of roof tops onto mattresses and other youngsters.
