    Welcome to Steel Butterflies!
    FOR JAPANESE...
A Fresh Breeze is blowing from Kansai... For those of us in Kansai (basically the Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto, Nara area) the coming season looks to be one of the most exciting ever! 1998 Ms Kansai and 2000 Ms Nippon, 3rd Place - Katsumi Akiyama Do you remember who won the very first Ms Nippon contest way back in 1983? Here are some photos of the very first Ms Nippon champion, Kyoto's own Kazuko Nakao. She is now one of the top fitness instructors in Asia and I'm honored to say that she's a dear friend, too. 1983 Ms Nippon - Kazuko Nakao Next we have three photos of the second and last Ms Nippon champion from Kansai, Masami Kitazawa of Osaka, who reigned as Ms Nippon in 1984. Ms Kitazawa's bodybuilding career lasted only a few years (and I believe that she retired before she reached her full genetic potential), but her physique still ranks as one of the best ever seen in this country. She was perfection. Ms Kitazawa is my original model for Tetchan. 1984 Ms Nippon - Masami Kitazawa In this issue of Steel Butterflies (Feb. 23, 2003)

Irondom has made claims which, for years, went unheeded by Academe. The list is long. Claims like, "weight training can improve flexibility," "weight training doesn't interfere with a child's growth," or "squats are not bad for the knees they're good for the knees" fell on deaf ears.
Over the past few years, however, the intrepid Sleuths of Academe have been getting their act together. Many of the beliefs we have long held have, one by one, been "supported" by the scientists' research. What we knew from years of practical insight and experience, researchers slowly came to the same conclusions through painstaking, controlled clinical observations and statistical analyses.
There is one observation that we've known about a long time which scientists are finally beginning to realize. And it does my heart a world of good to see it happening. For, in one feld swoop, scientists have laid waste to the surreptitious claims of Nautilus freaks and dinosaur coaches alike. Remember the Nautilus line: slow movements for one set to failure? And, remember the coaches' sentiment regarding long distance running for their strength athletes: "It'll get you through four quarters of play" and "it’ll make a man outa ya"?
While disproven, too many of these old beliefs nonetheless persist. What disturbs me most, though, is the current practice of power athletes who spend hours on the cycle ergometer or jogging in order to reduce bodyfat.

    The Politics of Powerlifting
by E. Don Kolb The politics in powerlifting have, right now, created both a highly amusing and extremely ridiculous situation. There are so many topics of discussion relating to powerlifting that there are no clear cut answers to that you would think this is a sport which actually is complicated enough that there should be something to debate about, and that is popular enough that people would actually have some rational motivation for competing in these power struggles. I will address a few of those stupid topics here, and dependent upon the e-hate mail and the e-fan mail that I receive, I will address comments about what I say here, or new topics, in a later column. First: The Race to 2500 Second: The Olympic Movement Third: Federations "Where do you lift, again?" "Hmm, yes, I lift in the N.A.P.W.L.T.T.W.Y.K.K.O.L.B.K." "Oh, OK, I don't think I really know anyone who has lifted in that federation, but I have seen their card forms and meet results in PLUSA. What does that stand for?" "Um, it is the 'National Association of Powerlifters Who Like Things Their Way, You Know, Kind of Like at Burger King'." Look, have two federations, one tested and one not tested. They both have two divisions, single-ply polyester and no gear. Each division can use wraps and a belt, the assisted one just gets bench shirts and squat suits. Men's weight classes: under 155, 181, 220, 265, heavyweight. The women can come up with whatever they want for weight classes, it doesn't matter what they do, anyway, cause there aren't enough women lifters to even make the sport legit for them...

    Strong Man Origins
In the late 19th century, when weightlifting was just beginning to develop as a sport, there was a wide range of lifts. Many of them were novelties performed by the professional strong men who performed with circuses in Europe, in music halls in Great Britain, and on the vaudeville circuit in America. Other lifts were used primarily for training, but were sometimes included in competitions. Among them were the dead lift, the supine or back press, the deep knee bend, the belly toss, the wrestler's bridge, the barbell curl, the one-arm swing, the upright row, the bent press, and the behind the neck press. At the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis, there was an all-around dumbbell event in which competitors had to perform nine one-arm lifts, a single two-arm lift, and an optional lift. When the British Amateur Weight Lifting Association was founded in 1911, it listed 42 official lifts for which it would approve records. During the 1920s, there were two national weightlifting organizations in the United States, the American Continental Weight-Lifter's Association (ACWLA) and the Association Of Bar Bell Men (ABBM). They both recognized records for a wide variety of lifts, although some of them were relegated to exhibitions, not competitive events.
