Pole vaulters' parents live with danger
By Ken McMillan
Times Herald-Record
kmcmillan@th-record.com

The moment Rory Quiller steps on the pole vault runway, his father, Army track coach Jerry Quiller, starts counting off. Does his son look relaxed? Is he holding the pole correctly? How is his start? How is his run-up? Are the arms extended? Is the plant going to be right? "Those are about nine of the thoughts that go through my head,'' Jerry said. "The tenth one is you hold your breath every time.'' The pole vault is no ordinary sport. Aside from the Fosbury Flop-inspired high jump, no other discipline in track and field pushes the human limits of gravity. It is not natural to hurl one's self skyward, holding on perilously to an arching pole ready to fling its occupant over a bar perched carefully atop a pair of stanchions set at twice the height of the participant. And what goes up, must come down – hard, hopefully into a protective pit of deep cushions.

...attempt the Pole Vault!
Actually it's not quite like that! The pole vault is a fun event but exacting requiring a range of physical skills including strength, speed, flexibility and gymnastic ability - and above all a fearless attitude and determination. We are very lucky in Wellington in being able to offer young athletes the chance to try this, the ultimate all-rounder's event.
Who me?
To become a pole vaulter the main qualification is an interest in the event. The best vaulters are all-round athletes with a background either in sprints or jumps. The event is particularly well suited to gymnasts or ex-gymnasts.
What is the Pole Vault?
Well I am sure you have seen it on TV - the aim is simply to jump over a bar set as high as possible. You are allowed to us a pole (of any length) to assist your passage to the upper realm. The Pole Vault is an Olympic event for men and women, and has recently become a glamour event starring the likes of Sergei Bubka, Stacy Dragila, Dimitri Markov and Tatiana Grigorieva.

POLE-VAULTING
POLE-VAULTING , the art of springing over an obstacle with the aid of a pole or staff. It is probable that an exercise of the kind was a feature of Greek gymnastics, but with this exception there is no record of its ancient practice as a sport. As a practical means of passing over such natural obstacles as canals and brooks it has been made use of in many parts of the world, for instance in the marshy provinces along the North Sea and the great level of the fens of Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Lincolnshire and Norfolk. The artificial draining of these marshes brought into existence a network of open drains or canals intersecting each other at right angles. In order te cross these dryshod, and at the same time avoid tedious round. about journeys over the bridges, a stack of jumping poles wa~ kept at every house, which were commonly used for vaulting over the canals. It's a rarity for a standout pole vaulter to compete in the long jump and sprinting events in track and field. It's like Snoop Dogg giving a rendition of "God Bless America." But Caitlin Hewitt is destroying the theory that vaulters only vault. Hewitt is a sophomore at Latrobe High School ... call her a sophomore sensation. She competes in the pole vault, long jump, 100-meter dash, 200 and 400. While competing in those five events is unusual, what really makes Hewitt rare is she excels in all events. This spring, Hewitt has cleared 11 feet in the pole vault, the No. 1 mark in the WPIAL this year. She cleared 11-6 last season, fourth-best in WPIAL history. She also is No. 1 in the long jump, and her jump of 18 feet, 9 inches at the Westmoreland County Coaches Association Championships Thursday was the third best in WPIAL history.

NCAA TRACK AND FIELD COMMITTEE ENHANCES POLE VAULT RULES
INDIANAPOLIS-The NCAA Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee has proposed several rules changes intended to reduce the risk of injury in the pole vault event. Sound safety standards already have been in place, but the committee reviewed pole vault because of concerns raised after several injuries and deaths in the sport in recent months. At its annual meeting in Indianapolis that concluded June 19, the committee voted to increase the minimum pole-vault landing pad measurement beyond the vault box to 6 meters wide by 5 meters deep (19 feet, 8 inches by 16 feet, 5 inches). The minimum has been 4.88 meters by 3.66 meters (16 feet by 12 feet). "Many NCAA institutions already have landing pads that far exceeded the previous minimum and already meet the new dimensions," said committee chair Diane Howell, associate athletics director at the University of Houston. The committee also voted to make the front portion of the landing pad the same width as the back portion. That standard is 6 meters (19 feet, 8 inches), and it must extend a minimum of 1.83 meters (6 feet) forward (toward the runway) from the back edge of the vaulting box. If the front landing pad does not extend to the area immediately around the vaulting box, a padded collar of 2 to 4 inches of uniform thickness must cover the area behind and to the sides of the vaulting box that is not protected by the landing pad. The collar padding must not affect the bend of the pole.

Doherty and McGeever take City Pole Vault Titles!
After placing second four weeks ago to Farrell at the sectional champs, Brian McGeever's bid for a third City Championship was in question. A refocused work ethic paid off in consistancy when it was needed. He was perfect through 11'6no misses, which proved to be what would be needed as both Brian McGeever and Brian Duggen would finish at 11'6. McGeever would take the win as Duggen had two misses at 11'6. It proved to be 4 weeks well spent. Darren Traynor and Dan Tuschaj both cleared personal bests of 9'6.
For the frosh, Brian Doherty continued to lead the way as he has done all season. His winning height of 10'6 came while he was also busy taking home the gold inthe Long Jump with a jump of 16'10. John Antrim-Cashin's personal best of 9 feet would place him third, while Pat Scramm finished in a tie for 5th. 1/11/03 Hispanic Games
McMahon sets new Armory Record and ups CHSAA record to 15'6
Gavin McMahon thrilled the armory crowd of over 3000 as he cleared an armory record and national leading height of 15'6 on his first attempt. It would tie Gavin with two others for the second highest vault in state history**. While he had Molloy's Ian Cassidy, who cleared 15 feet, beat on misses, 15'6 was needed for the outright win. He went on to attempt to break the state record- 15'9 set by Ryan Dall of North Rockland in 1993. (Note: Ryan's father, Gene Dall, North Rockland coach, was there to watch.) With the bar raised to 15'9.25 he would easily clear the bar on his second attempt, but unfortunately would graze the bar on his descent.

Stevenson joins the elite in pole vault
by Keith Peters Toby Stevenson has always been known as the guy in the helmet, even after winning the NCAA pole vault title in 1998 while competing for Stanford. While his black roller blade hockey helmet has been worn for protection since his high school days in Texas, it has received more attention than Stevenson's vaulting talents. "Yes, I guess I'll always be known as 'the vaulter in the helmet,'" Stevenson said. "But, hopefully now, I'll be known primarily as just a good vaulter." Stevenson likely overshadowed his helmet for good with a remarkable performance at last weekend's 63rd annual Tom Moore Modesto Relays. The 27-year-old Stanford grad became only the ninth man in history to reach the six-meter mark outdoors, vaulting a 2004 world-leading 19 feet, 8 1/4 inches. Stevenson came within an inch of the American record of 19-9 1/4 by Jeff Hartwig, who was second in Modesto at 18-10 1/4, and now ranks No. 2 all-time in U.S. history. The world outdoor record is 20-1 3/4 by Sergey Bubka of Ukraine in 1994. "I've been expecting a big one all year," Stevenson said. "Everything has been coming together recently - my diet, my training . . . everything. I didn't wake up in the morning expecting it would happen today, but you never do for something like this."
