POLE VAULT-MANAGING YOUR RISKS One of the most important aspects of pole vaulting is managing and reducing the risks involved so that your student-athletes compete in the safest environment possible. This requires a daily assessment made by the coaches and students prior to any actual vaulting. This list should be considered as a basis for the coach and students to begin their assessment. Each individual school site may have additional needs because of their unique environment. DAILY CHECK LIST FOR COACHES AND STUDENTS
  • Are all pads and top cover properly fastened together? Any buckles or straps should not be exposed to the jumper. Is the pit in the proper position? Do not allow the pad to "slide back" during practice, and it should remain snug around the planting box. If the pit sits on a cement or asphalt base is the entire cement/asphalt Are standards fastened to the ground? Are the standards covered so that no part of the base is exposed? Are the poles in good condition? Are the poles visibly marked with maximum weights and maximum hand hold positions?

There will be enough of them. The Class 6A regional meet Friday saw several city athletes qualify for next week's state meet, but the LHS pole vaulters easily had the most successful group. Four Lions Chelsey Ornburn and Laura Windheuser on the girls side and Ramin Zangeneh and Brendan Halpin on the boys side were among the eight total state qualifiers in the pole vault. Another Lion, Nolan Kellerman, just missed the cut with a fifth-place finish. LHS suddenly is looking like a pole vaulting factory, with four going to state and another just missing the cut. Pole vaulting forward Over $1 million invested so far Doug Ashbury
Northern News Services Yellowknife (Nov 24/99) - Moulding an idea into reality is often very expensive. Just ask Bruce Elliott, production manager at Fiberglass North. Over the past 18 months, the firm has been working on a machine which will manufacture a composite fibreglass transmission pole. Elliott estimates it has cost $1.2 million to bring the project this far; to the brink of creating a prototype fibreglass transmission pole. He figures it will take about $1 million more in investments before the firm is a bonafide fibreglass transmission pole manufacturer. Why the fuss? After all, we are just talking about a pole to support power transmission lines. Well, claims Elliott, engineered fibreglass transmission pole manufacturers are not that common. And if that's not enough to spark interest, the North American transmission pole market is a $7 billion a year business, he said. Another plus is that wooden poles keep rotting but fibreglass won't rot or rust. Elliott's toying with the idea of taking the company public to raise more capital. Some of the funding to date has come from government.

April 24, 2002 Pole-vaulter Kevin Dare, a Penn State sophomore, was preparing for his event at February's Big Ten Conference indoor championships in Minneapolis, when his dad walked up to wish him luck. "Dad, this is my day," Ed Dare remembers his son saying.
As Kevin planted his pole and surged toward a bar placed at 15 feet, 7 inches, his vault looked great, Ed says. But at the top of the jump, Kevin's momentum changed, and instead of moving toward the foam-padded landing pit, his head hit the metal box where he had planted his pole. Later that day, 19-year-old Kevin Dare died of massive head injuries.

Value of pole vault event extends beyond dollars
    By Bob Hudson
ST. GEORGE Over the years, as my sons competed in recreation programs in soccer and baseball, organizers have tried to emphasize the learning of skills rather than winning and losing. That has been particularly true in the beginning levels of those sports. While the intent of the organizers is laudable, the reality is that parents always had pencils and paper and kept score regardless of whether scoreboards were in use at the various venues. As a result, I find it a little disturbing that coaches in Classes 1A, 3A and 5A voted against scoring one event the pole vault in the recently completed Utah High School Activities Association sponsored state meets.

Inuries, illness have not kept Kim Dahm from excelling at the sport she loves. By Aaron Coe
    Herald Writer
LYNNWOOD - Debbie Dahm had only one thought when her daughter mentioned that she'd be taking up the pole vault. "Are you nuts?" she thought but did not say. She didn't know the half of it. Less than a year after recovering from a broken back, Lynnwood High School's Kim Dahm was back at it again, reaching nearly 10 feet above the cruel earth. Bones heal, right? For a while, no one was quite sure. Dahm, now a senior, began feeling some back pain during track season of her freshman year. It jolted her every time she dug her pole into the runway and twisted her body over the pole vault bar. It pinched her while she ran around on the soccer field. She knew something was wrong, especially when the pain worsened over the next year. One spring day during her sophomore year, she'd had enough. With tears in her eyes, she pulled herself from contention during a meet. After nearly a year of steadily building discomfort, a bone scan revealed a stress fracture of her L-5 vertebra. Though no one is 100 percent certain how the injury occurred, Dahm, who also plays club soccer in the spring, says she "definitely initially hurt it pole vaulting."

Pole vaulter lands on head at Big Ten meet
    Associated Press
MINNEAPOLIS Penn State pole vaulter Kevin Dare died Saturday after landing on his head during the Big Ten indoor championships. Kevin Dare died Saturday after suffering a severe head injury. After being treated by emergency medical technicians at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse, Dare was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. He never regained consciousness, and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. Witnesses said the 19-year-old vaulter tumbled backward, headfirst, onto the metal "box," the area 8 inches deep that is used to plant the pole. He was attempting a vault of 15 feet, 7 inches, well below his personal best. "He swung upside down and sort of stalled with his jump," Minnesota assistant coach Mario Sategna said. "It looked like he became disoriented and didn't know where he was. I believe he thought he had cleared the bar and was on the other side of it." Dr. Elizabeth Arendt, University of Minnesota Medical Director, said, "We did everything we could to sustain his life, but there was nothing we could do. The head injury proved to be fatal."
