    Pole Vaulting to Amsterdam
I'm flying Seattle to Amsterdam over the pole. Already we're halfway there. I scan the horizon from my window seat, looking for the aurora borealis . . . elusive flaming dancers that hint of a great faraway party you have to travel to find. They danced for me on my first flight to Europe. In thirty over-the-pole flights since, I've searched the horizon and seen not even a flicker. But I found my party. It's Europe. Rick Steves with his editor, Risa Laib, zoom over the North Pole on their way to Europe As I do each summer, I distill my material world into a carry-on-the-plane-size bag and leave our brash young land of God-given and self-evident truths for a refresher course in good living. For me, good living is freedom. It's packing light with an open mind and an empty journal. Our lives are rainbow arabesques that we paint ourselves and when I stop traveling I stop arcing upward. Someday I'll dream less of next year's trip and rely more on the slide carousels and journals of past adventures. But even though I'm older now, and more of a father figure than a travel buddy in youth hostels, I still have a need for empty passport pages.

Although our primary field is bicycle helmets, we get a lot of questions about helmets for other activities just because there is no Skating Helmet Safety Institute or Equestrian Helmet Safety Institute where you can ask. We also serve on the ASTM F8.53 Headgear Subcommittee, where we help to develop helmet standards for all types of sports. So here is what we know about helmets for other activities.

    Equestrian Helmets
this message by Dru Malavase , an equestrian helmet expert.

    Motorized Sports
Bicycle helmets are not designed to protect in the harder impacts a motorcyclist can achieve by hitting something at 55 MPH or more. There are good helmets designed for every motor sport, and no excuse to settle for the lesser protection of a bike helmet. Standard bicycle helmets do not protect the face (you can live just fine with a busted nose or split lip from a bicycle crash) or the jaw joint , which can transmit injurious force to the brain in a crash at motorized speeds. We believe that motor scooters require motorcycle helmets too, and would even include motorized bicycles. We have

Kids may be better off staying at home and watching tv rather than doing track and field according to a new study from the University of North Carolina (UNC). In what amounts to a shocking indictment of athletics and pole vaulting in particular, the research reveals that thirteen young US athletes - all high school boys - died from catastrophic accidents suffered while pole vaulting between fall 1982 and spring 1997. "All of them happen the same way. Either the athlete hits the landing pit and bounces out onto the hard surface surrounding the pit, or he misses the pit altogether", said Frederick Mueller, professor and chair of physical education, exercise and sport science at UNC (Mueller also directs the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injuries).

IAAF.org The Sport of Athletics Home News ... Official Partners Pole vaulting was known to the ancient Greeks, and the Cretans used long poles to vault over bulls. The Celts used to pole vault - but for length. This event became a vertical jump in Germany around 1775, during gymnastics competitions.
The year 1850 saw the first competition of "running pole leaping". The heavy, rigid poles were made of ash and the athletes climbed them as they jumped. In 1889, the Americans banned the movement of the hands along the pole and invented the technique of reversing the legs upwards, clearing the crossbar with stomach facing down. In 1900 lightweight bamboo poles were used for the first time, remaining in use for several decades (the last world record using bamboo was Cornelius Warmerdam's long-standing 4.77m in 1942), and the receiving 'box' for the pole was also introduced. In 1957 another American, Bob Gutowski, used an aluminium pole to set a world record of 4.78m which was broken in 1960 by Don Bragg (USA) who used a steel pole to clear 4.80m. This period also saw the introduction of landing mattresses which meant improved safety for competitors. The fibreglass pole, which permitted flexion and has revolutionised vaulting technique, saw the light of day in the USA in 1956. The first world record using this material was set in 1961 by George Davies (USA) with 4.83m.

Pole Vault Deaths Spur Safety Concerns
A recent rash of pole vaulter deathsthree within 2 monthshas highlighted the dangers of the event and has raised new questions about what can be done to make it safer. Barry P. Boden, MD, lead author of a 2001 study on catastrophic pole vaulting injuries, says that though extremely tragic, the deaths fit patterns identified in the study. "Based on our data, there's usually one death per year," says Boden, an orthopedic surgeon at The Orthopaedic Center in Rockville, Maryland, and an editorial board member of THE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE. "This is on the high side, but not out of the ordinary," he says. Tracking the number of pole vaulters is difficult, Boden says, so it's not known if the rash of injuries is coincidental or related to increased participation. However, numbers are thought to be increasing, based on the popularity of extreme sports and the influx of women into pole vaulting. Women now compete in high school and college, and the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney marked the first-ever Olympic women's pole vault competition. An American, Stacy Dragila, won the gold medal in the event.

Three mechanisms of injury were described in the 2001 study

Pole vaulting can be traced back to Ancient Greece, where Cretans used the technique to leap over bulls. Celts had fun with a pole too, using it for long jump competitions, but it was not until the 18th century when the Germans introduced the vertical form of the discipline that pole vault really began to take off around the world. From 1850 on, pole vault competitions abounded - not that they resembled today’s version much. The material used to make the pole has very much shaped vaulting styles over the years; the inflexible ash poles of yesteryear forced athletes to climb up the poles as they jumped, adopting body positions that would look very strange in a modern sporting arena. It was the Americans who, towards the end of the 19th century, invented the technique of reversing the legs upwards, clearing the crossbar with stomach facing down.

Vandystadt Four years in the making
Romain Mesnil has been French pole vaulting’s “next best thing” ever since he won gold at the European Junior Championship in 1999. With his obvious talent, good looks and cool demeanour he has inevitably been touted as the natural successor to Jean Galfione. Yet four years have come and gone since that junior title, and Romain has failed to transform his promise into victory at the highest level. True, the boy from Albi in the south-west of France did take bronze at the World Indoors in 2001 and earn a creditable 5th spot in Edmonton a few months later, but those are rare highlights in a series of disappointing performances at major championships: witness his failure to make the final in the World Championships in Seville in 1999, the Sydney Olympics and last year’s European Championships in Munich.
2003: lift-off Vandystadt A leap of 5.75m at the European Cup in Florence helped the French team to gold and restored the golden boy’s somewhat tarnished image. Now coached by Georges Martin, he has regularly cleared 5.80m since, equalling his PB and heading the world rankings for a while with a 5.93m vault in Rome. When European champion Alexander Averbukh upped that mark, Mesnil responded with his gutsy clearance at 5.95 m in Castres. The signs for Paris Saint-Denis could hardly be more encouraging then; Mesnil not only set a new PB and best performance in the world this year in Castres, he also registered the third highest clearance in French pole vaulting history, behind… Jean Galfione.

By Dan Habing Star correspondent May 20, 2004
Pole vaulting, says Evan Steward, is as exciting as a King's Island thrill ride. "It's pretty fun to free fall and just fly without anything holding onto you," says the Mooresville High School senior. Such fearlessness is essential for a good pole vaulter, said Pioneers head coach Chad Neal. "You're up 14 feet in the air, counting on a pole to get you there," he said. Steward is striving to qualify for his second trip to the state track and field meet in the pole vault. He placed 19th last year. This season Steward has won pole vault in all 10 of his outdoor meets and is the No. 1 seed for today's sectional meet at Bloomington North. He clinched the pole vault title at 13 feet, 9 inches at the May 4 Mid-State Conference meet at IUPUI. His best vault this season he cleared 14 feet, 1 inch in a March 25 meet at Beech Grove ranks third on The Indianapolis Star's list of area bests.
