Neo Vault DVD as a coaching tool Since the video came out and over the past few months especially, an interesting phenomenon has occurred. Coaches have been emailing me telling me what a great coaching tool this video is. The main reason is simple: the kids actually watch it. They watch it over and over again. Most instructional videos will loose a young pole vaulters attention (we know as coaches how hard that is to keep) and therefore the video sits on the shelf. What good is a video if know one watches it? With Neo Vault they enjoy it time and time again. I've had coaches email me and tell me it's a great teaching tool for this very reason. I've experienced this first hand. I'm coaching at a local high school. I have a very young crew, mostly freshman and one sophomore. I had seventeen kids come out for the vault. Sadly I had to send some back to their other event coaches and brought it down to 12. For the first part of the season I didn't even tell them about Neo Vault because it wasn't relevant at the time. Then when it was apparent that some of them became hooked on the sport I thought that they would really enjoy the DVD.

Is pole vault a hard sport to learn? Around the Academy:
I want to get into pole vaulting, as I'm a gymnast and also a sprinter. How accessible is it in England? Is it a hard sport to pick up? Hannah, 17 Coach replies:
It is very accessible as long as you have a qualified coach around! It does depend on where you are. The Birmingham area has an indoor centre and coaches to assist but there doesn't seem to be many vaulters around. It is quite a technical event, but also a new one, so records are constantly falling. A gymnast should be a natural. Basically, pole vault is like long jumping as regards to take off. Then the higher you hold the bar, the more speed you require to achieve enough 'penetration' on the pole (i.e. reach a 90 degree position with the ground) to then achieve the invert position (upside down in a handstand type position on the end of the pole!) to then get over the bar. The higher you hold, the more speed you need. You can have softer poles (i.e. bend far more easier) if you lack speed at higher heights.

October 28, 2003 Having coached pole vault in Lethbridge since the spring of 1995 (9 years).
I find that I lack the motivation to continue. Though I feel much obligation to the athletes who have worked so hard over the years, I feel to continue without the passion I have felt in the past would be unfair to everyone concerned. This decision has been debated in my thoughts many, many times over the past few months. I will attempt to explain why my passion for this sport has deteriorated to the point where I can no longer continue. 1. I am selfish and want my time to myself again. I want to spend my time on other things. 2. I am no longer convinced that the pursuit of excellence in pole vaulting is a worthwhile endeavor. Though it does teach many qualities that spill over into other facets of daily life and the fitness aspect is a plus to all involved. The rewards for reaching a national or international level are only greater problems of training and travel support. Coaching young athletes to reach their full potential means that some of them are going to reach these levels and the same problems of funding for national and international travel and higher quality training will come up again and again. I cannot lead young ones into this dead end with a clear conscience. 3. Volunteer coaches are used and abused in Canada. Volunteer coaches are expected to coach and conduct themselves in a professional manner. Volunteer coaches are out of necessity coaches, trainers, chauffeurs, administrators, fundraisers, psychologists, maintenance personnel, logistics experts, statisticians…etc. Volunteer coaches use their vacation time to spend time with and for their athletes. It is too much. This is not going to change.

Cliff Frohlich, who has written articles on sports physics in the American Journal of Physics and the book The Physics ofSports, points out that while the men's pole vaulting record has stood for more than 6 years, we've yet to see the heights to which women will vault. By using a vaulter's sprint speed to determine the potential vertical height, Frohlich says he expects the women's record to top 17.5 feet soon. That's more than two feet higher than wherethe current record sits. The women's current world record holder, Stacy Dragila, an assistant track and field coach at Idaho State Usniversity, just set her latest record of 4.63 meters, or 15 feet 2.25 inches in July at the Olympic trials in Sacramento, California. The world record in men's pole vaulting is held by the Ukraine's Sergey Bubka, who cleared 6.14 meters or 20 feet 1.75 inches in a 1994 competition.

The Art of Pole Vaulting
Why Pole Vaulting is da bomb! Pole Vaulting is so interesting because not so many people do it. You know your special and that you have a talent most people haven't even heard of. The feeling you get when you vaulting is like flying...its so awesome! Last year was my first year of ever attempting to Pole Vault. It was so much fun! I started after my best friend Bethany tried it out. She began first and I was so intregged, that I wanted to try it myself. I always had thought of Pole Vaulting being so cool, but it's not really one of those things you think of yourself as actually doing it. The first question someone asks me when they find out that I Pole Vault is so common to hear: "Is that hard?!?" To me, Pole Vaulting is something everyone can do. It's not hard at all. But to improve it takes hard work and strength. That's what is most important. My second year of Pole Vaulting has started up again. I am wishing the three of us the best of luck. Last year I only went to a couple of track meets, because I started late in the season. It was so much fun! Even though my best height was only 6'6'', I was still in 4th at Districts which got me to Regionals. This year however, I have impoved tremendously. Because of a weight training class I have at school, I have gotten a lot stronger and at my last meet I jumped 8'9''.

The physics of pole-vaulting Pole-vaulting was not one of the original Olympic sports in ancient Greece. Some think that the sport was derived from the Dutch habit of dyke-jumping, although one of the earliest pole-vaulting stands was built in Germany in 1791. The objective is, obviously, to get the athlete's centre of mass over the highest bar possible. However, today's pole-vaulters use a quite different technique to that used 100 years ago, when athletes went over the bar with their feet pointing downwards. Athletes now do a complex gymnastic manoeuvre, turning upside down as the jump takes place (figure 2a). We shall see that this is a direct result of the technology used. (figure 2) The rules for pole-vaulting that are set by the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) the sport's governing body are extremely liberal. There is no restriction on the length of the pole, the materials from which it is constructed or its energy-storage capacity. The only stipulation is that poles should be generally smooth and not be covered with too much adhesive tape. Poles were originally made out of solid wood, probably hickory. Slightly more flexible bamboo poles were introduced in the early 1900s, mostly by American vaulters, who dominated the sport at the time. Basic mechanics tells us that the highest stresses occur on the outside of a bent beam, and that a symmetrically bent object, such as a pole, actually has a zone down the middle (known as the neutral axis) where the stresses are very low and even zero. There is therefore no need for the pole to have any mass down the centre. Bamboo, which is a naturally hollow material, is much lighter per unit length than a solid pole yet provides the same maximum stress. This enables an athlete carrying a bamboo pole to either take a faster run-up or to use a slightly longer pole.

High Schooler Chip Heuser clearing a personal best of 5.20 meters at the Texas Relays, April, 2003. "Pole jumping" competitions were known to the ancient Greeks , as well as the Cretans and Celts , but with these exceptions there is no record of its ancient practice as a sport. As a practical means of passing over such natural obstacles as canals and brooks it has been made use of in many parts of the world, for instance in the marshy provinces along the North Sea and the great level of the fens of Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Lincolnshire and Norfolk. The artificial draining of these marshes brought into existence a network of open drains or canals intersecting each other at right angles. In order te cross these dryshod, and at the same time avoid tedious roundabout journeys over the bridges, a stack of jumping poles was kept at every house, which were commonly used for vaulting over the canals. Modern competitions probably began around in Germany , when it was added to the gymnastic exercises of the Turner by Johann C. F. GutsMuths and Frederich L. Jahn. The modern pole vaulting technique was developed in the

November 20, 2003 * 8-10 am * Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel and Marina * Tampa, FL Present: Bob Anderson, Earl Bell, Bill Brine, Roy Burek, Rick Burke, Steve Chappell, Tim Curley, Ed Dare, Eric Darnell, Scott Deitch, Ruben Echemendia, Dean Fisher (co-chair), David Halstead, Greg Henshaw, Eric Hostetler, Greg Hull, Jan Johnson, Ian Kovacevich, Peter McGinnis (co-chair), C.A. "Dewey" Morehouse, Dennis Piper, Daniel Pomerening, John Sabelli, Eddie Seese, Wilson SooHoo, Mark Strawderman, Chris Swanson, Randy Swart, Russ VerSteeg, Jeff Watry, Paul Wilson McGinnis opened the meeting at 8:05 am. Attendees introduced themselves. McGinnis then gave brief history of the proposed standard for specifications for helmets used in pole vaulting. The standard was balloted a second time during the summer of 2003 at the subcommittee level. This ballot resulted in three negative ballots (one by a non-member) as well as one comment accompanying an affirmative ballot. The purpose of the meeting was to address these negative votes and comments. NEGATIVE VOTES AND COMMENTS FROM JUNE 17 BALLOT: *W. Farrell (non-member) negative: "In Section 8.3.2 after the statement saying "For use in the sport of pole vaulting" add "and state the peak acceleration test results achieved" or similar wording so that consumers can compare helmet test results, not just whether the standard is met." Swart suggested that Farrell should be asked to withdraw his negative. If Farrell would not withdraw his negative, Eddie Seese moved and Dean Fisher seconded a motion to consider this a non-persuasive negative. Discussion: No other ASTM helmet standards included this specific labeling requirement. ASTM standards are pass-fail. There are more than one impact test - which acceleration result would be indicated on the label? Impact tests are not the only element of the standard. Motion passed unanimously. (Note: McGinnis spoke with Farrell after he arrived later in the day and Farrell indicated that he had withdrawn his negative.)
