The Paralympic Games have always been held in the same year as the Olympic Games. Since the Seoul Summer Games (1988) and the Albertville Winter Games (1992) they have also taken place at the same venues as the Olympics. On 19 June 2001 an agreement was signed between IOC and IPC securing this practice for the future. From the 2012 bid process onwards, the host city chosen to host the Olympic Games will be obliged to host the Paralympics as well. Kayaking was chosen since it is already recognized by the IOC, and offers Special Olympics athletes the opportunity to progress to a second ‘water’ sport. By highlighting the sport and offering training clinics during the 2003 World Summer Games, the hope was to encourage local Programs to develop this sport. [Photo by Adrian Melia, IRELAND OUT]
Special Olympics and Paralympics are two separate organizations recognized by the International Olympic Committee. The principal differences between the two lie in the disability of participating athletes and levels of sports ability. In addition, Special Olympics is the only organization that the International Olympic Committee [see Partnerships ] has given permission to use the word "Olympics."

Thanks to advancements in technology, a disability doesn't have to mean the end of an athlete's career.

Until recently, a physical disability would have forced an athlete into permanent retirement. But that's no longer the case. Thanks to new, high-tech sporting equipment, modern-day disabled athletes can now compete in their favorite games and sports. Perfecting their spin move World War II may have robbed soldiers of their limbs or the ability to use them but it didn't rob them of their desire to remain physically active. Out of this desire sprung wheelchair basketball, which is now played in leagues worldwide. And though most of the rules have remained the same since its inception, the equipment has undergone a radical overhaul. Racing chairs Basketball players aren't the only ones to benefit from these technological advancements. Racers once had to push 30 pounds of wheelchair across the finish line, and that was after they had stripped it down to little more than a pair of wheels. But the racing chairs of today weigh less than 15 pounds, and that includes a now-standard third wheel that lends greater stability.
