PRESIDENT´S COUNCIL ON PHYSICAL FITNESS AND SPORTS The Olympics and Paralympics show us the wonder and power of the human body, mind, and spirit harnessed and stretched to their potential. Watching the best athletes in the world compete for the gold, we are awed by the beauty of their form, the displays of strength and endurance, the commitment, discipline and spirit of these superb athletes. The Olympics and Paralympics motivate many people to try a new sport or reclaim one from the past. In our ongoing effort to motivate all Americans to become physically active and fit, we challenge you to banish the self-imposed mental boundaries that limit you, the harsh inner voice that whispers in your mind's ear, "No, I could never ski or ice skate or walk on snowshoes." We want to help you substitute a new voice, one that proclaims a resounding, "Yes!" Winter sports offer a way to have fun and get fit FAST. Backed up by the findings of Healthy People 2010 , the federal government's health goals and objectives for the nation over the next decade, and by a report released by the U.S. Surgeon General (

With Petro-Canada's support, Canada had an outstanding performance at the 2002 Paralympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, taking home 15 medals and placing sixth overall in the country standings. In 2003, the Petro-Canada Paralympics School Program was launched to inspire students in Grades 4 through 9 to embrace the Paralympic Movement's principles of inclusiveness, accessibility, peace and friendship through sport. This program promotes awareness, understanding and appreciation of people with physical disabilities and introduces students to the Paralympics and the amazing power of disabled athletes. Special Olympics In June 2003, five fully certified Level III coaches travel to Ireland as part of Team Canada for the Special Olympics World Summer Games. http://www.lisafranks.net/PARALYMPICS.html
THE PARALYMPICS The Paralympics Games are the equivalent to the Olympics for the world's top athletes with a disability. The intent of the Paralympics is to concentrate on the athlete's achievements rather than the disability. Athletes at the Paralympics include paraplegics, tetraplegics, amputees, blind and cerebal palsied individuals, "les autres", and those with an intellectual disability. The Games are held every four years, just after the Olympic Games and at the same venues. MY EXPERIENCE AT THE GAMES For most of my life I have dreamed of someday competing against the best in the world. The 2000 Paralympics in Sydney gave me that opportunity. The experience proved to be far better than I had dreamed. When the time came to leave Sydney, I was sad to go. Sydney did such a wonderful job organizing and preparing for the Games. From conversations with other athletes that had been to previous Paralympics, the general feeling was that Sydney did the best job to date of hosting the Paralympics.
I did far better than I had expected in my events. I won the 200, 400, 800, 1500, and placed second in the 100. I set four Paralympic records and had one personal best.

Building on the Bay Area Organizing Committee's theme, The Bridge to the Future, our bid will establish a new Paralympics standard by combining both event's schedules, among other innovations. The San Francisco Bay Area already is a national leader in disability rights and accessibility issues. By bridging the Olympic and Paralympic Games, our bid transforms the future of the Olympic movement while reinforcing the ideal that athletic excellence pushes the envelope of human potential.
