The paralympics Olympics in Syndney, Australia
Paralympics were in Sydney, Australia in October 18. Find out what types of sports these athletes are competing in and the history of this specialized olympics.
Some of the 4,000 athletes from 125 countries who participated were in wheelchairs, some had cerebral palsy, some had visual handicaps and some had mental handicaps. On October 4, three days after the Olympics ended in Sydney, Australia, the torch relay which led up to the Paralympics began in the same city. The torch went to every capital city in the country. On October 18 a cauldron in Sydney was lit and the city's "other Olympics" began. bodyOffer(26502) The Paralympics is not only the premier athletic even in the world for the disabled, but also the second largest sporting event in the world, second only to the Olympics. Between the Olympics and the Paralympics Australia had major athletic competions for 50 straight days. There were 18 events in the Paralympics. As far as size comparison for participation, the 2,000 Sydney Paralympics was about equal to the 1956 Melborne Olympics and twice the size of the 1988 Nagano Winter Olympics. There were competitions for athletes with six categories of disabilities. Some of the events were: singles and doubles archery for standing and wheelchair competitors, with scoring identical to Olympic scoring; athletics, including track, throwing, jumping, pentathalon and marathon; basketball for those with intellectual disability and those in a wheelchair; boccia, for those with cerebral palsy; equestrian events for competitors with all types of disabilities and goalball for those with a visual impairment.

    Paralympic Games
The Paralympic Games are a special Olympics for disabled athletes. Sir Ludwig Guttmann organized a sports competition in which became known as the Stoke Mandeville Games , involving World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries; in competitors from the Netherlands took part. The first Olympic Style games for disabled athletes were held in Rome in . The Games are now always held alongside the Olympic Games as on June 19 an agreement was signed between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) securing this practice for the future. The old IPC logo denotes three Tae-Geuks, one in red, blue and green. The three Tae-Geuks symbolise the most significant components of the human being: Mind, Body, Spirit. Twaalf keer goud op de Paralympics
    (30 oktober 2000)

When his coaches told him last winter that his defense skills were not ready for international goalball play, senior physics major Dan Gallant's determination did not waver.
"I went back [and] worked even harder," he said. "Now I'm ready for the real deal."
In September he will be a member of the goalball team representing the United States in the 2004 Paralympics in Athens, Greece.
The Paralympics is an international competition of elite athletes with physical disabilities that runs just after the Olympic Games, from Sept. 17 to 28.
Gallant is legally blind. He has a degenerative eye condition called ocular taxoplasmosas that attacks the retinas a little bit at a time. Gallant described his field of vision as looking through a piece of cheese.

    The Paralympic History Overview
The Paralympics are a multi-sport, multi-disability competition of elite, world-class, disabled athletes. Although similar in scope to the Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games provide an elite competition opportunity to athletes with a functional disability, which precludes their involvement in open competition of the Olympic Games. Paralympic athletes go through rigorous training year-round to prepare for their respective events. They are the best of the best, who through determination and hard work, earn the honor of representing the United States on the competitive playing field at the Paralympic Games. The Paralympic Games are held approximately two weeks after the Olympic Games in the same host city/country. The Paralympic Games are distinctly different than the Special Olympic World Games. The two, which are often confused as one in the same, are totally separate competitions. Each Games are developed by entirely different organizations which have different objectives. The Paralympic Games provide world-class competition for elite disabled athletes at the highest level. Much like Olympians, Paralympians compete for gold, silver and bronze medals against the best-disabled athletes in the world. Special Olympics International focuses on participation of everyone and involves athletes from ages 8 to 80 with mental retardation. All participants are considered winners and receive medals. The first Paralympic Games was held in Rome, Italy in 1960. Four hundred athletes from 23 countries participated. Since its humble beginnings, the Paralympics has blossomed and grown in size and complexity. The Paralympic Games is part and parcel of the Olympic Games. The Seoul Olympic Organizing Committee organized the 1988 Paralympics to be held in the Olympic venues two weeks after the Olympic Games. Barcelona and Lillehammer followed suit hosting the summer and winter Paralympic Games respectively, utilizing a similar time frame.
