23. What Are The Paralympics?
What are the paralympics? The paralympics are not to be confused with the Special Olympics, for athletes with mental retardation.
http://www.canoe.com/Paralympics/what.html
What are the Paralympics?
A quick rundown:
Athletes:
Special Olympics involves over 500,000 athletes from 8 to 80 with mental retardation. Paralympics provides world-level competition for elite athletes with any disability. This year, for the first time, some individuals with mental retardation will compete in the Paralympic Games. Many of these athletes received their training through Special Olympics. Olympic Games are open to any athletes who qualify.
Competition: While competition and winning are just as important to Special Olympics athletes as those in Paralympics and the Olympic Games, Special Olympics is unique in that it encourages participation and the year- round, lifetime benefits of sports training. We call this "Training for Life." Research shows that Special Olympics participation leads to higher social competence and better self-esteem among participating athletes.
Ability Levels: Every year there are over 15,000 Special Olympics competitive events around the world. Competition in 23 sports is open to athletes of every ability level. Special Olympics does hold World Games every two years, alternating between Summer and Winter Games, to bring together Special Olympics athletes from around the world. The ninth Special Olympics World Summer Games in New Haven, Conn., in July, 1995, involved more then 7,000 athletes from over 140 countries and drew 500,000 spectators. The next Special Olympics World Winter Games will be February 1-8, 1997, in Toronto, Canada.

Join Team Odyssey as we set sail for the ’04 Athens Paralympics. Team Odyssey is a United States disabled sailing team. We compete in Sonars – one of the Paralympic boat classes to be used in Athens – and our past successes have already qualified the United States for a Paralympic entry in Athens in ’04. Our goal this year is to win the right to represent the U.S. as that entry and to medal in Athens next year. To do this, however, Team Odyssey must raise $75,000, and we need your help. Join our team as we work to reach Athens and help us achieve our Olympic dream. Olympic medals are rarely won through chance; rather, they require a lot of hard work and strong financial support. Most medallists receive much of their support from their communities. Our families and friends have helped us get to where we are today. We’re now hoping to expand our base of support community wide as we raise the stakes and make a run to go for the gold. Please join our team and

Click here for more on this story Posted: Sunday October 29, 2000 1:50 PM Updated: Monday October 30, 2000 8:07 AM Fireworks highlighted the festivities as the 2000 Paralympics ended in Sydney. AP By Luba Vangelova, Special to CNNSI.com Eleven days ago, the 11th Paralympic Games began with a party. Sunday night they also ended with a party. But instead of the flash and noise of the opening ceremony, the two-hour closing ceremony relied more on Australians' trademark irreverent wit and also the high spirits of the athletes, their competitions now behind them. Fittingly for a sports festival that showcased ability rather than disability, the Turkmeni athlete who wowed the opening night crowds with his impromptu handstands opened tonight's party by dropping his crutches at one end of the infield and walking on his hands to a settee in the middle of the stadium. He pressed a remote control to set off fireworks all around him. The stadium screens showed a montage of highlights from the Paralympics as Australian singer Graeme Connors sang the sort of inspirational song that no Olympic or Paralympic ceremony can be without.
