    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
    Date: Thursday, June 13, 2002
    Release: No. 004-02
Sports Commissioner Podziba Announces
6th Annual Liberty World Challenge
Outrigger Canoe Competition on June 29th, 2002
New York City Sports Commissioner Kenneth J. Podziba announced today that New York City will be the site of the 6th Annual Liberty World Challenge on Saturday, June 29, 2002. The daylong event will include 100 outrigger canoe teams participating from all over the globe. The Liberty World Challenge is poised to become one of the largest competitive sporting events on the water and the event represents the revitalization of a once thriving culture of athletic events in the New York City Harbor.
“The concept of setting this ancient tribal sport against the background of New York City’s modern skyline has made the Liberty World Challenge a premier international paddlesports event and attraction, drawing the world’s best watermen,” said Sports Commissioner Podziba. “We are delighted to welcome the participants and spectators from around the world to New York City; the competition promises to be an exciting and entertaining afternoon for all New Yorkers to enjoy.”
Six person teams, with athletic skills ranging from Olympian to novice, will race 16 miles passing national monuments in the New York City Harbor including the Statue of Liberty. The route will begin at Pier 84 and competitors will head down the Hudson and continue up the East River, past the South Street Seaport, turning clockwise at the Brooklyn Bridge. The competition will eventually lead the participants behind Ellis Island and up the New Jersey shore. The winner will be declared when competitors cross the pier-head between the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum and Pier 84.

Newport Outrigger club about Hawaiian Newport Beach
The Newport Outrigger Club, established in 1958, was the first Hawaiian outrigger club on the West Coast. Founded by Noah Kalama, the organization today is led by his son, Thomas Kalama. Still based in Newport Beach, CA, the club continues to promote long-held native Hawaiian traditions through the teaching of outrigger paddling and cultural arts such as native dance and handcrafts. Newport Outrigger is a Non-Profit organization with 501c4 status. To view our NOC documentation click here. General Objectives Promote Good Citizenship and Fellowship Preservation and Promotion of Hawai'iana ... Instructional and Educational Programs General Objectives Promote Good Citizenship and Fellowship Newport Outrigger Club was founded on the premise of outstanding character and the tenets of truth, fairness, tolerance, and respect for our elders, fellow associates, and the environment. All activities present opportunities to build respect for one another and trust in our personal lives and, in turn, the lives of those in our communities. There is a certain level of trust and cooperation for one another - be it preparing for a race event, assisting another canoe club or organization, contributing time, money and manpower to other cultural, environmental or charitable organizations, or simply assisting one of the corporate associates in a personal endeavor. Newport Outrigger is firmly grounded in helping one another to achieve personal goals. While not immediate in its outward impact, the benefits to the community and mankind of good fellowship, citizenship and cooperation are immeasurable.

What We Do
The text and photos in this section have been reproduced, with permission, from Ka’nu Culture, Outrigger Canoeing Australia and the Pacific 1995 by Steve West. If you want to know more, the best place to start would be Steve's Outrigger FAQ at the Ka'nu Culture site. The outrigger canoe has been the principle mode of transport in Oceania for thousands of years and whilst its direct role in everyday life throughout the Pacific region has diminished giving way to the outboard motor and boats of contemporary design, outrigger canoe racing now provides a fuel for renewed passion and an assurance that the legend of the outrigger canoe lives forever. Canoe racing evolved as a natural extension of the ancient Hawaiian’s everyday relationship with the single-outrigger canoe utilised primarily for coastal fishing. Whilst the ocean provided many of their food needs so it also provided their sport and recreation. Outrigger canoe racing is intrinsically linked to this past and the cultures from which it manifested, and as it grows in popularity throughout the Pacific region there will be inevitably an ever increasing cross-over between cultures, between those European in origin and those who are indigenous to Oceania. This is brought about by travel to contests within the Pacific region and by the diversity of members of outrigger canoe clubs which is surely one of the great attractions of the sport. At a time in humankind’s history, surrounded by hype and technology, it’s good to be a part of something that has a greater purpose, more than just another sport.

60. MDROCC-About Us
Marina del Rey Outrigger Canoe Club (MDROCC) has a long and rich historyin the ancient Polynesian tradition of outrigger canoeing.
http://www.marinaoutrigger.org/aboutus.htm
Marina del Rey Outrigger Canoe Club (MDROCC) has a long and rich history in the ancient Polynesian tradition of outrigger canoeing. Paddling, which was brought to California several decades ago, has developed into a competitive and widely popular sport worldwide, and MDROCC is proud to be a part of the tradition in California. Our club has been based in the marina for over 35 years and is one of the two original founding clubs of the Kalifornia Outrigger Association (KOA) now known as the Southern California Outrigger Racing Organization (SCORA)
Our History Marina del Rey Outrigger Canoe Club (MDROCC) was founded in 1967 by Sandy Kahanamoku and Steven Kekuewa. It was the merger of two previous clubs, Santa Monica Outrigger Canoe Club and Kai Nalu Outrigger Canoe Club. Both Sandy and Steven were the coaches for the club for many years. With the passing of our founders Steve in 1997 and Sandy in 2003, we dedicate our effors to preserving their legacy and racing in their honor. Through the years, we have been proud to claim many "firsts". The first women's team to race the Catalina Channel Crossing in 1972. In order to be allowed to race, these bold women were required to bring both a doctor and a nurse onboard. Their heroism and dedication to the sport ensured a place for women in long distance canoe racing ever since.
