Halden SK in Slovenia
Saturday evening 9 runners of Halden SK arrived to Slovenia for a training camp. On Sunday morning they competed at Slovenian national championships in Relay, which took place on a nice continental terrain some 20km outside Ljubljana. Jarkko Huovila and Emil Wingstedt were running the last legs for the two Halden teams and it was Emil who set a rather "unachievable" time for the locals. He needed 26' minutes for 4.7K course. The other Halden team was disqualified and so it was Slovenian OK Ursus 1 and OK Ursus 2 teams which came third and second (orienteeringonline's teams, yep!!)
Emil the boss explaining the plan for the days ahead.
(C) Fè
PS: Now already the legendary team OK Ursus (consisting of one old and serious biochemist and two young quasi-biochemists) became Slovenian national champ for the second time in the row. We never are favorites, but we always win. So far this team won all the relay national championships it entered... But unlike some others we don't call ourselves "the fastest Slovenian club". We just turn out to be. He, he... Tega paè ne zmore vsak OK Ursus je prvak!!
Arto Rautiainen died Sad news shocked Sweden and the whole orienteering world last Friday. Arto Rautiainen died during the training session at the age of 36. According to Göteborgs-Posten, the cause of the death is not yet clear.

What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a sport in which orienteers use an accurate, detailed map and a compass to find points in the landscape. It can be enjoyed as a walk in the woods or as a competitive sport. A standard orienteering course consists of a start , a series of control sites that are marked by circles, connected by lines and numbered in the order they are to be visited, and a finish . The control site circles are centered around the feature that is to be found; this feature is also defined by control descriptions (sometimes called clues ). On the ground, a control flag marks the location that the orienteer must visit. To verify a visit, the orienteer uses a punch hanging next to the flag to mark his or her control card . Different punches make different patterns of holes in the paper. The route between "controls" (refers to the flag or the site) is not specified, and is entirely up to the orienteer; this element of route choice and the ability to navigate through the forest are the essence of orienteering. Most orienteering events use staggered starts to ensure that each orienteer has a chance to do his or her own navigating, but there are several other popular formats, including relays and events in which the orienteer must find as many controls as possible within a specified time.

Orienteering Definition
In orienteering you use a map and compass to find your way across unfamiliar terrain. In a typical event, the organizer places orange and white control markers at various land features found on your map. These markers act as checkpoints along the course. The object of the sport is to use the map and compass to locate the control markers and return to the finish. Using your imagination and navigational skills, you try to select the best route to each control. Once there, you punch a score card which verifies that you found the control. There are many versions of orienteering (on foot, bicycle, or skis; at night; in relays, and so forth), but the idea is essentially the same: the use of a map and compass to find your way across unfamiliar terrain.
(Text courtesy of NEOC Times Furthermore, most orienteering events are in some way, shape or form a competition (for those inclined). A measure of success is commonly given by time taken to complete a given course or by the number of control flags found during a specific time allotment. A ranking of competitors (including a winner) usually follows. Competition can range from trying to do better than fellows from your club, to elite level where competitors are running and navigating faster than most people can run on a flat road. It's all up to you as to what you want from the sport. The figure at the top of the page is one side of the three-sided orienteering flag.

TRAIL ORIENTEERING
Conventional orienteering combines fast running with precise navigation, typically through forests or over moorland. Trail Orienteering (Trail O) is a discipline of the sport designed so that people with disabilities could have meaningful orienteering competitions. It completely eliminates the element of speed over the ground, but makes the map-interpretation element much harder. Able-bodied people can compete on equal terms with the disabled. This site is maintained by Anne Braggins , who chairs the International Orienteering Federation's Trail O Commission. This website contains:
