open water swim history of marathon swimmer Ted Erikson (Lake Michigan/English Channel) and pioneer swimming dog Umbra (Bosporous/Dardanelles). Includes long distance links.

First, a quick overview of Umbra and Ted:
    BELOW:
On left are more details on Umbra and Ted background and on right (gray bar) links of significance to marathon (over 10 miles, primarily!) solo and professional swims and swimmers....
..Umbra, born about June, 1990 and found six months later as an unclaimed stray, was adopted by Ted Erikson and Diane Richards. Of sleek body and short all black hair, her lineage is unknown, but even as a puppy she exhibited a Labrador's love of water and a Greyhound's love of running. Umbra began swimming tandem with Erikson in Lake Michigan during the summer of 1991, establishing a benchmark of a 32-minute mile. Over the summer of 1992, Umbra decreased her mile time to 28.5 minutes and covered distances up to three miles while pacing Nial Funchion, who went on to complete an English Channel crossing that year. Umbra has pioneered canine swimming with four 'first' records filed with the Guinness Book of World Records * A round trip Peace River crossing in Port Charlotte, Fl on 3/9/94 (2.4 miles,65 min.)
*An open water Lake Michigan swim in Chicago, IL on 7/10/94 (2.7 miles, 72 min.)

Last updated:24.05.2004 Welcome to Teddington Swimming Club’s home page on the web!
The club was founded in 1978 when the old open air pool in Teddington was modernised and reopened as a well-equipped indoor pool. We celebrated our 25th Anniversary in June 2003 with an exciting gala against other local clubs and a family barbecue at Hampton Open Air Pool. A group photograph was taken to mark the anniversary. You can read about these events and our other activities on the web pages using the links provided.
Teddington Swimming Club provides a wide variety of swimming activities including
    • teaching young children to swim
    • providing improvement classes for older children
    • competitive swimming through age group, individual and team competitions
    • masters swimming
    • open water long distance swimming
    • land training The club has about 400 swimming members and a number of associate members. Swimmers ages range from 6 to 60+. Most of our sessions are held at Teddington Pool, with additional sessions at Feltham, Twickenham and Aldershot. The Club is managed by a Committee of volunteers, mainly swimmers and their parents, and employs qualified swimming coaches to direct the swimming programme. Our Chief Coach, Carol Butler, is also the Richmond Borough Swimming Coach, so our swimmers are able to benefit from extra training sessions offered by Richmond Borough Council. Our top swimmers represent Richmond at the London Inter-borough Gala and the London Youth Games.

    Swimming in Open Water
If you are not sure if an area is safe for swimming, don't swim there. Never swim right after a meal, allow about an hour for your food to digest. Never swim if danger flags are flying. Check whether the tide is going in or out. Don't swim near piers or breakwaters. Stay clear of boats. They take time to change direction, and they may not see you. Swim parallel to the shore. Open water is usually much colder than a pool, so don't swim out too far.

    Open-water swimming at Clearwater Beach
By TERRY TOMALIN, Times Outdoors Writer Everybody needs a good place to swim. This beach, with its well-marked, 2-mile-long "safe bathing area," is a great place for a workout. Lifeguards (full-time, year-round professionals) watch the water from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., seven days a week. But the best time for a long swim is the morning or evening when there are no crowds. You can swim by yourself or join one of two organized groups that meet each week on the beach. Steve Strange, founder of the "Strange Man Biathlon," leads a group that meets every Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Pier 60. Ron Collins, the first man to swim the length of Tampa Bay, leads another group that meets at the same place on Sundays at 8 a.m. All are welcome. Each year the USMS Coaches Committee awards host status to four sites for Open Water clinics. These clinics consist of a minimum four-hour swimmers' clinic and may be coupled with a sanctioned/recognized open water swim. The clinic will be run by an approved clinician who has experience in coaching and/or competing in the open water environment. During the clinic, the clinician will dispense information that will be helpful to swimmers in completing and competing in open water swims. Local coaches are encouraged to attend and assist with the administration of the clinic. Among topics discussed at an Open Water clinic are navigation, open-water technique, training, pacing, swimming in crowd, wet suits, safety and nutrition. Organizations granted host status for an Open Water clinic are presented with a $500 grant to assist with the expense of bringing in a clinician. The grant money will be distributed after the clinic once the clinic wrap up report has been submitted to the Coaches Committee clinic coordinator. In addition, the Coaches Committee will assist whenever possible with clinic planning. To apply for an Open Water clinic, submit a USMS Clinic application to the Coaches Committee clinic coordinator.

The open water swim was started in 1994 in honor of Masters swimmer Steve Omi’s life. Steve passed away from cancer one month before his 37th birthday. He was well liked and respected by his fellow swimmers. He was an inspiration in life and throughout his battle with cancer. His strength and fortitude was the impetus for starting a scholarship fund to honor his memory.
This open water swim is a fundraiser for a scholarship to be awarded to a local graduating senior planning to swim at the collegiate level. The recipient isn’t necessarily the fastest swimmer. Preference is given to a senior that has shown dedication to swimming and been an inspiration to other swimmers. Our desire is to acknowledge a student that treats others with respect, provides a role model, and takes a positive approach to life. These traits represented Steve Omi’s character.
The money raised from the event goes for actual costs and to the scholarship fund.
