I'm a reasonable swimmer and have been practicing in my wetsuit over more than 750m but when it came to it, the shear volume of people and crowded conditions freaked me out a bit and I ended up doing half my swim in breaststroke until it all settled down a bit when I could finally relax, breath and feel confident to move in crawl. Now I've entered my first Olympic distance and am panicking a bit about the open water swim. Is this something that just comes with competition experience or is there anything you can do to practice swimming in groups of people! I'd really, really appreciate any advice on this as I don't want it to become my 'bogey' phase - I love swimming! A number of people wrote in with encouragement that things will get easier...

Mark's blog kiting, web development and whatever else I fancy. Main February 03, 2004 Open water swimming I've been getting back into swimming recently to strengthen my back. In the last couple of sessions I've started to feel better and am really enjoying it. When I was younger I swam competitively for eight years but stopped because it was starting to get boring for me (I think I'd 'burnt out', or something). Just before I went to uni I did a few triathlons but didn't continue my swimming after that as I got heavily into rock climbing. I used to much prefer the short 100m and 200m races over the longer distances but am starting to get more into longer distance stuff now and am starting to train a bit better over middle distance sets. My real aim at the moment is to build up my distances enough to be able to do some longer open water swims once the water round here warms up a bit. There are some really good looking swims around East Lothian that I want to do to get me used to the open water because in the summer I'd really like to swim things like Mull to Iona, the Kyles of Bute and the mainland to Skye. There is even talk of trying to raise some money for the lifeboat appeal over at Troon but I'll need to get some real training done before that. Although I have done a little open water swimming from triathlon, my experience is pretty limited so I've done a little research and found this

I am considering training for the English channel swim and found this book excellent as a source of vital information with regards open water swimming. Not only is the book from a world expert but there is great passion in the writing as well as superb technical aspects of swimming in open water. I especially liked the fact that it dealt with very long swims unlike many of the commercially available open water books out there that are catering for triatholon swimming distances as obviously that is where the money is with regards to publishing and selling.It is what most long distace swimmers train for. There are very few books on long distance open water swimming longer than a triatholon swim so this book for me is a must. As for the reviewer that felt she wrote the book like a drill coach, if you want to swim something like the english channel any approach unlike the one in this book will equal failure.
