Variables are always changing such as water temperature, air temperature, currents, river speed, wind, waves, not to mention a possible two hundred bodies starting at the same time and trying to get to the same end point. In as minimal words as possible (I talked for an hour and a half to a group in a hotel conference room on this topic and I still could have discussed the finer points of open water swimming), here are a few pointers, which help alleviate some of your race morning anxieties. Know how to swim correctly.
Proper stroke technique can only help. The more efficient you are in the water, the less energy you use to get to a certain point at the same rate of perceived effort. Find a coach or a master's swim program to learn, and watch, correct swim technique. It is also good to get videotaped to see yourself swim and thus give you a visual. The main principles I stress for the freestyle stroke are:
  • Balanced head position - the head dictates the rest of the stroke.

Open Water Swimming > Customer Review #1: An excellent book

This is an excellent book. I am considering training for the English channel swim and found this book excellent as a source of vital information with regards open water swimming. Not only is the book from a world expert but there is great passion in the writing as well as superb technical aspects of swimming in open water. I especially liked the fact that it dealt with very long swims unlike many of the commercially available open water books out there that are catering for triatholon swimming distances as obviously that is where the money is with regards to publishing and selling. It is what most long distace swimmers train for. There are very few books on long distance open water swimming longer than a triatholon swim so this book for me is a must. As for the reviewer that felt she wrote the book like a drill coach, if you want to swim something like the english channel any approach unlike the one in this book will equal failure.

Making the leap:
Six tips to help your transition from pool to open water
From HealthNewsDigest.com
If you're one of the thousands of people who'll jump into the water this summer to try your hand and legs at the growing sports of open water swimming or triathlon, the thought of open-water swimming may loom large in your mind. To help prepare for the transition to your local lake, reservoir, or ocean, Michael Collins, chairman of the United States Masters Swimming coaches committee, offers these tips on helpful pool practice: 1. Close your eyes : Swim 8 - 10 strokes in the pool with your eyes closed, then sight above water. This will help you learn to swim straight without using the bottom of the pool as a guide. 2. Get off to a fast start : Practice a few sets of fast starts, followed by settling down to a more relaxed pace. This simulates the quick starts typically found in open-water events as participants angle for position before settling in to their paces. 3. Dolphin it

at Herbert Lehman College Open Water Swimming I was flattered to be asked to write an article about my open water swimming techniques. I enjoy encouraging Masters to continually learn and strive to be better swimmers, but at the same time I have been ambivalent about sharing any personal open water secrets. Well, here it is. 3 weeks prior to the swim I am asking myself the following questions during practice:
  • How is my form? Are my hips rolling? Am I getting an equal roll and stretch on both arms? What is my kick doing? 2 beat? Is each leg/foot giving equal propulsion? What breathing pattern is best for me?
During the swim practices I practice that breathing pattern that I can comfortably handle. I also do interval training sets or sets which are equal to the time I expect to be in the water for the race. (For example, if I was expecting to do a 45-minute race, I might do 10 x 200 on 3:00, followed by a set of 10 x 100 on 1:25.) These longer sets increase my physical and mental endurance. On the day of the swim I give these suggestions:
  • Eat a meal 2-3 hours before the race.

Posted: June 27, 2003 Triathlon: Open Water Swimming Open Water Swim Training By Tim Crowley When training for triathlons would you do all your run training on a treadmill or all your bike miles on a stationary trainer? Probably not, so it makes sense to get in the open water if you want to be a better triathlon swimmer. Safety, skill development and well thought out training sessions will get you out of the water faster and with more energy to put toward the other two events. Too often, athletes get in the water with no plan, and just swim. This is not the best use of swim time, and will do little to improve race times. Triathlons are rarely won in the water, but you can easily fall hopelessly behind with a less than stellar swim leg. The goal of open water training is to do workouts simulating the race conditions in which you will race. The most important consideration is safety. You should never swim alone into open water for obvious reasons. Getting a small group together for swim sessions is a good option, as well as having a canoe or kayak escort. The key is being creative and safe when putting you open water workouts together. If you have no other option than to swim in open water alone, then stay in waist deep water for added safety.
