To Fina homepageFina Masters open water swimming rules. MOWS 2, A Masters open water swimming event may be included in World Championships.
http://www.noww.nl/info/x-fina-ows-masters.html
Fina Masters open water swimming rules
Masters Open Water Swimming shall be defined as any event for which the distance is greater than 1500 metres and where entry is restricted to Master swimmers. Normal Masters age groups shall apply. The Open Water Swimming Rules in Part IV of the FINA Handbook shall apply to Masters Open Water Swimming with the following exceptions. MOWS 1 Masters Open Water Swimming events will normally be up to 5 km with a maximum distance, under favourable circumstances, of 10 km (over 50 years age groups), and 15 km (under 50 years age groups). Favourable circumstances are defined as a high water temperature with no adverse conditions. No Masters open water events should be held in water less than an average of 18° Centigrade. MOWS 2 A Masters Open Water Swimming event may be included in World Championships. MOWS 3 An ideal venue for Masters Championship Open Water events would be an international 1000 metre rowing course. This would allow for 2500 metres per circuit and would have advantages from a safety and administrative point of view with the large numbers liable to be competing. MOWS 4 For distances under 5 km, individual escort boats with judges are not required. Paddle boards/canoes at a minimum 10 to 1 swimmer to escort ratio with a backup of powered craft at a minimum 20 to 1 ratio should be provided. For distances over 5 km, an escort paddle board/canoe should be provided for each swimmer with a power boat back up ratio of 15 to 1. All paddle board/canoe escorts should be fit and trained in close support techniques for supporting an unconscious swimmer until a rescue craft can attend. Powered craft should not be allowed in close proximity to swimmers. They must remain clear of the course ready to render assistance if required.

Open Water Swimming
Welcome to my swimming pages, at present very much under construction as, during the coming Summer (wot? In Britain) I hope to visit, photograph and otherwise describe outdoor swimming spots around the North West of England. All sites featured are open to the public and accessible at least on foot or bike via public rights-of-way. However, swimming outdoors, especially unsupervised (arrgh! shock!! horror!!!) seems to be an activity regarded in some quarters to be on a par with child molestation, so first - a bit of a rant. Is open water swimming a safe, healthy pastime, or a foolhardy, dangerous exercise as is claimed by the rabid control freaks of the Safety Gestapo? According to well-qualified opinion we humans, with our large feet, partially webbed hands and lack of body hair, are an aquatic species. We are built for the water and evolved that way long before swimming pools were invented. Humans are naturally attracted to water which explains why most holidays are taken at the beach, be that by sea or lake. Swimming, outdoors and in pools, is the most popular participant sport. Yet according to the Safety Gestapo anyone entering open water has as as much as a 1 in 4 chance of drowning, as well as running a risk of catching just about every disease in the book (and probably some new ones that aren't!). Utter nonsense. Just to put the record straight here is an extract from the hatchmere.com

Performance (competition) - Open Water Swimming
A challenging alternative to indoor swimming as we know it, Open Water Swimming was officially recognised in the Swimming world in 1986. Although in actual fact, competitive open water swimming was part of the very first modern Olympics in 1896.
The Amateur Swimming Association’s definition: Long distance swimming is any swimming competition in open water up to 25km. Events greater than this are referred to as marathon swims. Lakes, rivers, canals and the sea constitute open water. Pool events such as swimathons do not count.
Anyone undertaking open water swimming must be a competent swimmer. Whilst open water demands different skills to those of pool swimming, the differences are no greater than between freestyle and backstroke.
What’s on offer in North Lincolnshire? There are no open water swimming clubs in North Lincolnshire at present, however there are some swimming clubs in neighbouring counties with swimmers who compete in open water swimming events. Others have squads that train specifically for open water swimming. Kingfishers FC in Scarborough have an open water squad with its own coach. Contact details are as follows:

Some Ideas for Improving Open Water Swimming
Professor Ross Sanders - Director, Centre for Aquatics Research and Education, University of Edinburgh
Darren Smith - Scottish National Triathlon Coach, Stirling, U.K.
Introduction
In a previous article were presented. In this article we look further at the principles governing performance in swimming in the light of the specific requirements of open water swimming. Clearly, open water involves a range of swimming conditions and demands that differ from pool swimming. Conditions in open water may range from those of a 'glass-like' fresh water lake to a swirling mass of waves off the beach, to swimming on your own or tightly positioned in a pack of competitors. The degree of choppiness of the water may change with wind strength and tidal movements. Courses may be point to point, or around a set course navigated by buoys that need to be rounded. In many ways, swimming in open water requires a variety of skills that can be very different from swimming in a pool. In fact, a given swimmer needs to adapt a range of skills to different race conditions. Swimmers even need to modify their swimming technique within a race such as when negotiating a triangular shaped course where the wind and swell may be in the direction of swimmers in one leg, but against and/or to different sides in the others segments. Thus, swimmers need a technique that is not only adapted generically to open water swimming but also need to be skilled at adapting that technique to suit the conditions. This is very different from the case of pool swimmers who refine their techniques to be very consistent because the environment they race in is standardised.

Switzerland I am about to embark on the Swiss Gigathlon in July 2004 which includes a total of 5km in the open water (Swiss lakes). Usage of a wetsuit is mandatory. As I am much better at the breaststroke than the crawl, I plan to swim only the breaststroke.
Questions are: are there any specific tips on swimming in the open water with the breaststroke and in addition, breaststroke with a wetsuit? What type of wetsuit should I look for.
Thanks for your help!

Facts, history, and links about open water swimming.
    http://www.didyouknow.cd/aroundtheworld/swimming.htm
Around the world Who will be the first to swim around the world?
In a remarkable feat of endurance, 31-year Benoit Lecomte became the first man to swim across the Atlantic ocean, 1998.
The 1920s was the Golden Age of Sports and Johnny Weissmuller was its golden swimmer. He set world records in 67 different events before trading swimming for even greater fame as Hollywood's most durable Tarzan.
Gertrude Ederle - in 1926 she became the first woman to swim across the English Channel.
Another great sportsman - 13-year old Kutraleeswaraan swam the six waterways in one calendar year, earning him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. Farfetched it may seem but when Benoit Lecomte swam across the Atlantic in 1998 he introduced a new global sports challenge: the first to swim around the world. The long history of swimming is depicted in mosaics from early Middle Eastern civilisations and at Pompeii. Although swimming was not included in the ancient Olympic Games, the Greeks practised the sport, holding it in high regard. Plato considered a man who didn't know how to swim uneducated. Julius Caesar and Charlemagne were known as great swimmers, and Louis XI frequently swam in the Seine. There have been other swimmers whose talents brought them international fame: Johnny Weissmuller, Gertrude Ederle, Mark Spitz. And then there was
