Introduction
In my many years in this sport, I have never seen any reasonably complete article in the magazines dealing with open water swimming (they seem to rehash the same basic stuff every few years). A lot of them talk about how to draft, or tell you to look up every few strokes to stay on course, but very few seem to deal with the subject in much detail. So last summer, I started to gather my thoughts and experiences on the subject. I finally got back to it just now. Rather than deal just with racing in open water, I have tried to deal with both swimming for fun and racing. I welcome all comments ! (Did I forget anything? Am I completely off base? Are there any other tips that you have found particularly helpful?) Enjoy!

You can swim in places with no walls - open water. Lakes, oceans, and rivers offer a great change of scenery - go to your local beach for today's workout instead of more laps in the pool. Depending on the reasons you swim, you may find it more psychologically rewarding; it can certainly be just as productive for building your fitness. Look at the map of the swim or go to the lake, ocean etc., itself and figure out which direction you will need to swim and when. Talk to people who have previously done the race (in past years). 9. Learn more than one stroke. Breaststroke, backstroke, and side stroke can all be used both to give you a rest from crawl and to help you to stay on course. Fly can be used if you really want to impress people or just have them think your crazy.(just joking, but you probably already realized that). 8. Don't forget that you have two more events to go. Don't kick like crazy on the swim. Don't go for your all time swimming record.

Coupled with the beautiful water, this tropical paradise provides FINA with a wonderful venue to host the 1 st FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships. Honolulu is the capital city of Hawaii, and Waikiki Beach, on the south shore, is the crown jewel of this paradise city. Waikiki Beach starts at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and extends to the east to Diamond Head, an inactive volcano. There are multitudes of shops, restaurants and entertainment experiences to be found in Waikiki. We hope to see you all in beautiful Hawaii. Welcome to the Scottish Masters web site. We hope to continually build this site, with relevant information relating to masters swim meets with the results and records, general open water information, training weekends, links to other master's sites throughout the world as well as the development of the national training programme. We have recently undertaken a long and rigorous task of reformatting the coding of this site. The majority of this work is hidden behind the scenes, but enables the functionality and accessibility for people with disabilities. A new code of practice issued by the Disabilities Rights Commission requires all web sites to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, which includes visually impaired, blind and hard of hearing. The Scottish Masters site has now managed to achieve Triple-A accessibility status, as well as HTML 4.01 and CSS from the World Wide Web Consortium. The site also has Triple-A status from Bobby and ICRA content. Information on all of these topics can be found through links from the icons below.
