It's sports vs. human interest stories during NBC's Olympics
(Los Angeles Times) Serious Olympics viewers don't just watch the Olympics, they train for them. I myself have been in training for four years. I'm ready for the thrill of overeating and the agony of the commercials, starting with Friday night's opening ceremonies (7:30 p.m. to midnight). Without meaning to seem boastful, the secret of how I, a professional couch potato, will be able to go the 167.5 hours on NBC (not counting the 172 more on MSNBC and CNBC) is by using the aerobic method of sitting and watching.

The Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta came to a close Sunday night, after two weeks of athletic competition between 197 countries and over 11,000 athletes the most ever in an Olympic Games. LONDON SUNDAY TELEGRAPH
The spectacle of victorious athletes grabbing a national flag and parading it around the stadium is a familiar part of international sporting competition, but U.S. Olympic officials have ordered their 550-strong team to exercise restraint and avoid any jingoistic behavior.
The plan is part of a charm offensive aimed at repairing the country's international reputation after the deepening crisis in Iraq and damaging revelations of the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. forces at the Abu Ghraib prison.
"American athletes find themselves in extraordinary circumstances in Athens in relation to the world as we know it right now," said Mike Moran, a veteran former spokesman for the United States Olympic Committee who has been retained as a consultant to advise athletes how to behave.
"Regardless of whether there is anti-American sentiment in Athens or not, the world watches Americans a lot now in terms of how they behave and our culture. What I am trying to do with the athletes and coaches is to suggest to them that they consider how the normal things they do at an event, including the Olympics, might be viewed as confrontational or insulting or cause embarrassment."
Four years ago at the Sydney Olympics, members of the victorious American 400-meter relay team were widely condemned for strutting with the U.S. flag after their gold medal presentation. American officials, mindful of the country's precarious standing in world opinion, are desperate to avoid any repeat.

Salt Lake Olympics rocked by resignations, evidence of payments
New meaning has been given to the coming winter games
But officials assured Utah won't lose Games
In this story: January 8, 1999
Web posted at: 11:09 p.m. EST (0409 GMT) SALT LAKE CITY (CNN) The Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics sunk deeper into the quagmire of a bribery scandal Friday, with revelations of cash payments to International Olympic Committee members and the resignations of the SLOC's two top officials. But United States Olympic Committee officials say they have been given a commitment by the IOC that despite the scandal, the Games won't be moved out of Utah. "We have assurances from (IOC) President (Juan Antonio) Samaranch and the International Olympic Committee, and the United States Olympic Committee is 100 percent, totally, unequivocally in support of Salt Lake City putting on the Games in 2002," said USOC President

India will bid for 2016 Olympics
Story Tools NEW DELHI, India (Reuters) India will bid to host the 2016 Olympics, the Indian Olympics Association (IOA) announced on Monday. With New Delhi having been chosen in November to stage the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the IOA decided at its annual meeting on Sunday that it would apply to hold the Summer Games for the first time. New Delhi has hosted the Asian Games twice, the inaugural edition in 1951 and again in 1982. Despite a population of more than one billion, India managed just one Olympic medal at Sydney in 2000 a bronze by woman weightlifter Karnam Malleswari. The country failed to win any medal in 1992, 1988 and 1984. Their last gold dates back to the 1980 Moscow Olympics and the men's hockey title. Athens and Beijing will host the next Summer Olympics in 2004 and 2008. The 2012 hosts will be decided next year.

93. Nutrition Science & The Winter Olympics
Nutrition Science the olympics. One of these sports, women s ice hockey, has its debut as a medal sport in the 1998 Winter olympics!
http://btc.montana.edu/olympics/nutrition/default.htm
Welcome to Sports Nutrition! Science is a powerful asset for athletes who want to use nutrition to their advantage. Whether an Olympic medal is won by tenths of a second in a ski race, decimal points in a figure skating competition, or goals in an ice hockey game, an athlete's nutritional status makes a critical difference in reaching peak performance. This course explores the science of sports nutrition and shows how to apply nutrition principles to benefit an athlete's training and performance.
Nutrition and physical training are connected long term athletic success depends on meeting day-to-day nutritional needs. For example, maintaining optimal hydration status and sufficient muscle glycogen stores delays the onset of fatigue and enables athletes to train longer before tiring. Also, although the stress of exercise training stimulates physiological improvement, adaptations to physical stress actually occurs in the recovery period following the exercise sessions. Satisfying an athlete's needs for rehydrating, refueling, and rest are essential components of the recovery process. Check out the Physiology and Psychology section for more information on the physiological aspects of exercise training.
Although sport nutrition basics are similar for all athletes, important differences exist for individual athletes in various sports. The focus here is on the nutritional needs of selected endurance sports and strength/power sports. One of these sports, women's ice hockey, has its debut as a medal sport in the 1998 Winter Olympics!

THE OLYMPICS
Swifter, Higher, Stronger
Background for the Teacher
The Olympic Games bring together thousands of the world's finest athletes to compete against one another. Almost every nation in the world sends teams of selected athletes to take part. No other sports event attracts so much attentionseveral million people attend the games and more than 2 billion watch them on television. The purposes of the Olympic Games are to foster the ideal of a "sound mind in a sound body" and to promote friendship among nations. The Olympic motto reflects the dedication of the athletes as they take part in the games. In the oath they promise to compete "in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of the sport and the honor of our teams." While few qualify to participate in this international competition, all can strive to imitate the example of dedication, cooperation and enthusiasm exhibited by the competitors. The real lessons learned are lessons about lifeestablishing good work habits, making sacrifices to reach a goal, working as part of a team, and learning to make decisions. The Olympic Games are named for athletic contests held in ancient Greece for almost 12 centuries. They were banned in 394 but were revived and made international in 1896. The Winter Games were added in 1924. World War I and World War II forced cancellation of the Olympics in 1916, 1940, and 1944, but they resumed in 1948 and are held every 4 years. After 1992 the Winter and Summer Games were no longer held within the same calendar year. Winter Games were scheduled for 1994, after only a 2-year interval, and every 4 years thereafter. The Summer Games were scheduled for 1996 and every 4 years thereafter.
