It amazes me to hear lifters squabble over something as spurious as whether Olympic lifting or powerlifting is better or worse than the other, or whether there is merit in athletes from other sports performing the respective lifts from either. The answer is clearly that both have much to offer because each is radically different from the other. All one has to do is read the research literature to understand that there are different forms of strength. There's speed-strength (a combo of starting strength and explosive strength). Then there's both aerobic and anaerobic strength endurance. Then there's limit strength. Powerlifting, for the first time in history, was devised to test one's limit strength. No other sport does.
But let's get into Olympic lifting, and try to discern whether there's something there for athletes from other sports to benefit from.
Pound for pound, Olympic weightlifters have a greater level of speed-strength than any other class of athletes in all of sport. This fact was made very clear during a massive scientific expedition carried out on the athletes at the Mexico City Olympics in 1964. Sports scientists found that Olympic lifters were able to both vertical jump higher than any class of athletes (including the high jumpers), and run a 25 yard dash faster than any class of athletes (including the sprinters).

I just encoutered an ignorant post on a message board today. I posted a response
to this post and decided to also post it on the website. The following is a post from an olympic lifting
zealot. I have not disclosed the name and e-mail address to protect the ignorant.
The post:
I was wondering what you guys had to say on this topic. I know that HIT guys are generally dead-set
against olympic lifting because it's "dangerous" and "ineffective". I think that is a bunch of crap. Here's a few reasons why...
1) Olympic lifting is no more dangerous statistically than training
with machines. 2) Olympic lifting, like any other movement, must be performed with strict form. These lifts
should be learned from an experienced lifter or coach. Doing them wrong could lead to
serious injury, but performing them correctly is quite safe. 3) Lift quick, be quick. Is it a coincidence that the men with the fastest 5 meter
dash times in the world are not sprinters but rather olympic lifters and throwers? 4) It is ineffective? I'd say that over 85% of elite 165 lb olympic lifters could out-squat and out-deadlift
any 220 pound HIT bodybuilder any day of the week. The strongest men in the world are

What is Olympic Weightlifting?
It is sad that these great movements hardly exist anymore in the training programs of the West. Those who are performing Olympic weightlifting still have a clear-cut advantage over those who are not in improving performance. How often do you walk into a gym and you see somebody snatching, or clean and jerking a barbell? Not often, if ever. Many people are dragged into fearing these lifts because of the words of a few. Over time these lifts have been credited as being the most dangerous form of exercise in existence. What people don't understand is this: exercises do not injure people, people injure people . It's the uneducated lifter using poor form and inadequate warm-up that results in injuries. The safety of Olympic lifting has been documented in several studies. One study has shown that Olympic lifting has the lowest number of injuries per 100hrs trained compared to both bodybuilding and powerlifting (1). If you look at the best Athletes in the Olympic Games 90% of them will have one thing in common, ranging from pole vaulters to shot putters, they all have some form of Olympic weightlifting in their program. Even if that ranges from the traditional power clean to the much more complex snatch. These athletes understand the importance and benefits of these movements and the carry over to their sport. Olympic lifts train the athlete to explode and use the maximum possible force. They develop a high

OLYMPIC LIFTING
An essential and often forgotten benefit of regular exercise, is the rapid development of new bone formation. The term minimal essential strain (MES) refers to the threshold stimulus that is attributed to new bone formation. A force that reaches or exceeds this threshold and is repeated often enough will signal osteoblasts to migrate to that region of the bone and lay down matrix proteins (collagen) to increase the strength of the bone in that area, according to the latest issue of "Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning" from the National Strength and Conditioning Association . Although the threshold is somewhat subjective due to age and fitness variations, the threshold can be characterized by any physical activity the intensity of which is relatively higher than the intensity related to everyday movement. For example, an elderly man/woman can induce bone formation by simply walking at a brisk pace rather than his/her normal pace for a moderate amount of time.

For more on Maryse, check out her website I started weightlifting in December 1990. I was in high school and there was a weightlifting competition happening in my school. The organizer asked me if I wanted to be a volunteer to bring the medals to the winners. So, for the first time of my life I saw what weightlifting was (I had never heard of it before!!! It's crazy!) Anyway, there was a guy, named Simon Garand, from my school that did the competition and I knew him a bit because he was in my music class. He pushed me to go and try to do weightlifting the next week and I accepted. At my first training I really liked it so I decided to continue and I trained about 3-4 times a week (before my volleyball practice!). I did my first competition after 2 weeks of training with Simon and a teacher at my school, who was a former weightlifter named Denis Dubreuil. There was a small regional competition in my school and I was allowed to compete. I did 30 kg (66 lbs.) in the snatch and 47.5 kg (107 lbs.) in the clean and jerk, in a bodyweight class of 52 kg (114 lbs.). I was so nervous that I almost threw up. That's how I started! In May 1991, there was a competition for 16 years and under and there was a trophy for the best team. We had 4 girls but 5 girls was the requirement for a full team. So, I said to my sister (who was 12 years old, 35 kg [77 lbs.], and mostly bones!!) "Come on, you will complete the team!" That's how my sister got started in the sport, and she did a lot of competitions with me (almost all). She won medals at the first women's junior world championship in July 1995, and she is one of the best junior Canadian woman that has ever done weightlifting. Now she is pregnant (she's 20 years old) so I think that will end her career for now, but she still trains with light weight and will probably referee or coach for a while.
