Allenbourn Canford Netball PROGRIP NETBALL TEAM Bournemouth League For cheap low cost international calls THE GANG back row: Tanya Knowlton, Caroline Pastecchia, Caroline Stedman, Sharon Latini front row: Alison Warren, Jo Kelly, Karen Cook. Subs: Gemma Hibberd, Jane Oddie, Denise Legg, Teresa Roberts History: Progrip was formed in 1996, but were then called “Seven Up”. Caroline Smith (now Pastecchia) and Jo Kelly had been playing for another team which had folded and so in order to keep playing decided to set up their own team. We couldn’t find a sponsor at that time and so all of the money for all the fees came from the players themselves. We also had our kit bought by Caroline’s Dad! The players were mainly work colleagues at the time, some of which hadn’t played netball since they were at school but we all just wanted to enjoy a game of netball – win or lose. This was just as well as we only seemed to lose then! Obviously the team has changed since we started but there are still , with Caroline Stedman, Caroline Jo Kelly originally from the very first side. Over the last couple of years

The Rules of the Game
History of the Game
Lab sports are generally thought to date back to ancient times when scientists had to have additional occupations to supplement their incomes. Often they turned to sports as a way to make ends meet, but as Universities began paying higher salaries they stopped playing for pay and put their talents to use in friendly competition. Lab Netball was not the first sport to make it off the courts and into the lab, although most other attempts at indoor sports proved to be too dangerous. Lab Bowling originated in England and enjoyed great success until the much discussed "retirement" of Lord Kelvin in 1897. Lab Bowling never recovered from that event, even after the advent of shatter-proof Pyrex. The next era in lab sports takes us to Australia, where school spirit makes it impossible for scientists to restrict rugby to the playing field. Lab Rugby only existed for about 3 weeks in 1901 and was cut short by the untimely demise of professor Shelby. After Shelby's death no sport was able to make it into the lab until after World War I. Sports finally returned to the lab after the advent of baseball, which was fairly successful for many years. Lab Baseball required no personal injury to make its way to the sidelines of science, but instead was supplanted by a need to do more science and a lack of national baseball during World War II.

NETBALL is a team game played on all continents and in over 50 countries, although it actually began here in the United States, before it was exported to Britain and the British Commonwealth which is where it gained in popularity. It is fast, skillful yet inexpensive, played with simple equipment. Although it is the world's most popular team game for women, it is also increasingly played by men. In brief the rules of Netball are that:
  • it is played either indoors or out on a hard surface by two teams of seven players
  • restricts areas in which team members play
  • it it requires goals to be scored by throwing a ball through a ring which is attached to a post 3.05 meters high.
  • it requires players to pass or shoot within three seconds
  • it allows no contact which interferes with play
  • it restricts the number of steps players may take with the ball
Netball has been playing in the USA for 21 years. The United States of America Netball Association (USANA), Inc., the governing body of netball in the USA, was founded in New York on May 26, 1992. It is a registered non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and expanding the sport of netball across the USA. After only 2 years in operation USANA was able to take a contingent to 1995 World Championships in Birmingham, England where they were ranked 14th in the world, 26 countries participated. It is also their desire to go again to world championships in 1999 in New Zealand. World Championships are held every 4 years. In 2003 it is being held in Jamaica.

UWS Athletic Union The University of Wales Swansea’s Athletic Union is responsible for virtually all the sporting activities in the university. It works to develop both competitive and non-competitive sport and to facilitate the development and achievement of its clubs. The redevelopment of Sketty Lane and the arrival of an Olympic sized swimming pool in the near future illustrate Swansea’s ambition to become an elite sporting institution. All standards are welcome and encouraged in the university. The AU cater for 46 different clubs which vary from the mainstream sports like rugby, football and netball, to water sports like water polo and sub aqua, to martial arts like judo and tae kwon do, to new and exciting sports like octopush and kite-surfing. We have great facilities that allow indoor and outdoor sports, mens, womens and mixed sports and team and individual sports. There is a club in the AU for everybody. Membership of the Athletic Union is essential to ensure you get the most out of your time at Swansea. The diversity of activities and participants is vast yet all have the same goal, to enjoy themselves and have a great time. Every Wednesday students congregate in the town centre and enjoy one of the best nights Swansea has to offer, Sportsnight. On top of this the AU works in partnership with the SU to organise the Midsummer Ball, which is one of the biggest and best of university balls. In 2001 the event attracted nearly 5,000 people who enjoyed top charting acts such as Hearsay, Semisonic and Chesney Hawkes. In conjunction with Cardiff University’s AU we also organise the Welsh Varsity Match which is amongst the largest, noisiest and most successful student varsity match in the UK.
