BCNA is a non-profit organisation run by a group of volunteers whose sole purpose is to finance, organise and train athletic members in the game of Netball. Government grants, fees and fundraising events enable BCNA to carry out various programs. Netball is traditionally a winter sport and is played in two seasons, September - December and January - April. Each year there are numerous tournaments, league games and other activities around the province as well as around Canada ( Events Calendar ). In Canada, netball is played in a full size gym with league matches played on Saturdays during the season. BCNA also has a Junior Development division that teaches netball in Elementary and High Schools around the province. Netball is currently played in four Canadian provinces and in May each year the Canadian Netball Association runs the National Tournament. Teams play in three divisions: Open, Under 23 and Under 18. The tournament venue alternates between the Eastern and Western provinces annually. In 2004 the National Tournament will be held in Calgary, Alberta. Download the Netball Post Newsletter!

Origins of the Great Girlie Game
Netball derived from basketball and in fact it used to be called women's basketball when I was a pup. Apparently it resulted from some confusion when the rules of the new game of basketball was imported into Britain in the late . It was then developed as a more lady-like version suitable for English school girls via strict non-contact rules and limitations on the amount of movement around the court. This therefore minimised the exertion the 'gels' were exposed to and also of course minimised their perspiration...er I mean their "glow". Things have changed a little since then. Although players are still only allowed to take one step with the ball and the court limitations on each position remain, the game is now high paced, extremely energetic and, judging by the amount of times I fall down on court, far from lady-like! Its a great game and is now apparently the number 2 participant sport in Australia (after golf). Its the number one women's sport in the world and now even the guys are getting into the act.
The Basics
As you can see, netball is played with seven players on each team on a court that is divided into three sections, plus two goal circles and a centre circle.

22nd May Results
Central District Harlequin challenged traditional powerhouse Garville deep into the last quarter before going down 54-63 in the Dairy Farmers Cup round held at ETSA Park last Saturday. In the curtain-raiser the Reserves team defeated Garville to record their third win of the season, whilst the Club’s impressive band of Juniors collected another ten wins from fourteen games.
The Centacare League side started confidently and led Garville by four goals at quarter time. Goalies Emma Thomas and Marnie Vidovich were relentless in their attack at the ball, and the Waddington sisters were having a big impact in the mid-court. In the second quarter, the Greys came back and were ahead by two at the main break. Harlequin would not be dismissed however, and after an enthralling third quarter the scores were level. In the Final term, Garville’s experience and composure were telling factors and their lead ballooned out to nine, certainly not a reflection on what had transpired.
The Sporstpower Reserves put in their best performance of the past two seasons to win in handsome style 51-40. Janelle Humphrys provided a calm head and direction throughout the contest, whilst inspirational captain Anna Dunn was a strong and determined contributor. Lee Beech and Alisha Hewett continued their impressive form in defence.

The club is more than happy to talk to any one wishing to play netball fom Seniors to Juniors, from experienced to new players. Also if you think you would like to coach a team contact the club (you do not have to be experienced, assistance is provided) Volunteers in any useful capacity are always welcomed, if you wish to volunteer but are unsure in which capacity to volunteer, contact or talk to
committee members, parents and players.
A Touch of History
The Morphett Vale Netball Club is a voluntary based organisation which was founded in 1947. That year the club fielded one "B" Grade team in the Southern Basketball Association. These teams were from other local country towns including Blewett Springs, Willunga, McLaren Vale, Happy Valley and Noarlunga. In 1974, the Southern United Netball Association was formed and the inaugural summer night competition was conducted at Bice Oval in Christies Beach. This association eventually outgrew its facilities and Morphett Vale, by now one of the largest clubs in the southern area, followed this fledgling association from Christies Beach to new courts erected at Jordan Drive, Morphett Vale, and from there to its present twelve court complex at Wilfred Taylor Reserve, States Road, Morphett Vale.
