The Illinois men's tennis team nearly put together two consecutive undefeated NCAA title runs, but third-ranked and fourth-seeded UCLA handed the Illini their first defeat since May 19, 2002. The Bruins beat the Fighting Illini 4-2, in the national semifinal match tonight at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. It was a bitter ending to Illinois' three seniors, who competed together this evening for the final time. The trio led Illinois to an amazing 112-13 dual-match record during their tenure, and brought home two National Indoor titles and one NCAA Championship.

Its predecessor, the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States (IAAUS), was established on March 31 to set rules for amateur sports in the United States . Its creation was urged by then-president Theodore Roosevelt in reaction to his concern over the growing amount of serious injuries and deaths occurring in collegiate football. The IAAUS later became the National Collegiate Athletic Association in Up until the the association did not offer women's athletics. By however, all divisions of the NCAA offered national championship events for women's athletics and most members of the AIAW joined the NCAA.
