SHP groups travel by bicycle, at their own pace and close to the land, using public and private transportation when necessary. Groups live simply, using campsites, hostels, and other modest facilities. In the countryside, groups buy food at local markets and cook their own meals. in cities, restaurants are often used.

Is there anyone out there who didn't take advantage of the great sunshine to have a great weekend of riding? The Forum was suspiciously quiet all weekend as even the stalwart PC-bound readers got the bikes out. Here's Paul Beaumont riding around Cutgate over the weekend. (Photo by - Simon Beaumont.)

Mountain Biking in New Zealand
by Philip Greenspun Home Travel New Zealand : One Article Have you ever wished you could mountain bike in California back in 1915? Only about three million people lived there then, you could drink water from mountain streams, and there weren't any police to chase after you for riding in forbidden areas. Well, stop wishing and book a flight to New Zealand. New Zealand's 3.3 million friendly citizens have conveniently packed themselves into three cities so as to leave the rest of the California-sized country to mountain bikers, sea kayakers, and hikers. You'll have mountains as spectacular as the Sierras, but with an emerald lake in front of each one and waterfalls cascading down every slope. But you won't have to throw your bike across the back of a burro, sleep with vermin and communicate using smoke signals. New Zealand has smooth roads through the mountains, charming clean social hotels that cost $6/night, and the most modern telephone system in the world. Probably the best thing about New Zealand is that people have time for each other. My first 24 hours in the country were instructive. I landed in Auckland, the nation's biggest city and transferred to the domestic terminal for a short hop to Wellington, the nation's capital. I walked to the gate feeling that something was horribly wrong. Eventually it struck me that I hadn't had to go through security-nobody has ever hijacked an airplane in New Zealand and they don't bother with metal detectors or X-rays for domestic flights.

A bicycle touring club, offering day trips (mostly on the road, but some mountain biking) thoughout San Diego County every Saturday and Sunday morning, and on Tuesday evenings.
http://www.knickerbikers.com/
The Knickerbikers is San Diego's bicycle touring club, offering day trips (mostly on the road, but some mountain biking) thoughout San Diego County every Saturday and Sunday morning, and on Tuesday evenings. The length and pace vary, but most of the rides are in the 30-60 mile range. Tours , ranging in length from two days to three weeks, explore scenic areas throughout the U.S., and the rest of the world. Recent tours have taken the Knickerbikers to New Mexico, the Canadian Rockies, Hawaii, Washington, Wisconsin and Colorado. Our club, the Knickerbikers of San Diego county, was established on Friday, May 31, 1974. Forty-three charter members subscribed to the idea that a regular program of bicycle touring experiences could be offered without involving institutional encumbrances. In effect, our club was purposefully not organized. There are neither rules nor regulations, no club officers - aside from our tongue-in-cheek representative office of Knickercommander (the club servant) - and no business quorum.

Camp High Rocks for Boys
Position Announcements Employment Information Request form Camp High Rocks sits at an elevation of 3000 feet in the midst of 1100 acres of camp-owned mountain woodland, with an 11 acre lake, and miles of hiking and biking trails. Founded in 1958, High Rocks remains dedicated to providing a caring, challenging, and noncompetitive outdoor experience for boys. Campers come from all over the southeastern United States; many return year after year for the wide range of activities offered and for the supportive environment they find here. The strength of High Rocks lies in its staff: in each counselor's unique talents and personality, and in an expression of these through the combined effort of the staff working together. We are looking for a team of caring people who will share thoughts with each other, try new approaches, support one another, and who are willing to be creative, energetic, responsible, and patient as they lead by example. Each counselor shares in various responsibilities: being aware of camper safety, organizing activities in camp and on trips out of camp, teaching specific skills, and supporting the campers' growth. Male counselors live in a cabin with 5 or 6 boys, ages 8- 16. We act not only as teachers, but as friends, role models, and at times "parents." There is a lot of hard work involved, but the joy felt and the personal encouragement received from helping a child grow and mature is unmatched. It is a great experience to become a part of the High Rocks family.
