Midwestern Council of Sports Car Clubs presents a website dedicated to Road Racing at State Fair Park West Allis (Milwaukee), Wisconsin USA It is often forgotten that State Fair Park also has a strong sports car racing tradition. Within the oval is a hairpin shaped section that, combined with about 90% of the oval, provided an interesting road racing course. When used as part of the road course, the oval was run clockwise, opposite the normal direction, providing unusual banking in the turns. Sports car races have been held at State Fair Park by different regions of the Sports Car Club of America, the Midwestern Council of Sports Car Clubs, and other independent race groups. In addition to actual wheel-to-wheel racing, the Park has been the site of many time trial and autocross type events. State Fair Park was a horse track from the 1870s. Its first auto race is reported to have been held in 1903. It was a dirt oval until 1954, when it was paved. The road course was placed in the infield when the oval was paved. A Motorcycle Shrine With Some Priceless Exhibits THE SAMMY MILLER MUSEUM If you take a look at a map of Britain, you'll notice a small island off the south coast. This is the Isle of Wight. Just across the water on the mainland is the town of Lymington and a little further inland is New Milton. Remember that name, it's home to some of the most hallowed marques in motorcycling. By Frank Hilliard An Aermacchi Harley-Davidson 350 in full race trim in the former exhibit hall. Behind it is the 1953 348cc ex-Works Norton 'Kneeler.' SAMMY MILLER is a legend in the motorcycle world, a road racer who established himself as one of Britain's premier trials riders in the glory days of the 1950s and 60s. As a works rider for the Ariel factory in Selly Oak, he single-handedly put the winged horse at the forefront of that unique branch of the sport. When Ariel was absorbed by BSA, he went his own way as a rider and dealer for the Spanish company, Bultaco. The site he chose for his small shop was midway between Bournemouth and Southampton on the English south coast. In the corner of his showroom Sammy put some of the bikes he had raced over the years, including the legendary Ariel that carried licence GOV 132. In time, the bikes in the corner began to take up more and more space as he extended his collection to include other notable motorcycles from earlier eras. This led to extensions and additions, and finally to the creation of the Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum.

By Todd Canavan , Associate Editor The introduction of Erik Buell's S1 Lightning set the Harley sportbike world on its ear earlier this year. It was a bold statement, that a Vee-twin could be the basis for a muscle bike, producing tire shredding torque and high velocity horsepower. That a Harley-Davidson powered machine could think about holding itself up to scrutiny against bikes like the Ducati Monster. We are going to race our S1. You heard me right. The Motorcycle Online race team is racing a Buell S1 Lightning. I don't mean in any of those sissy one-make classes, where the "racing is close because all of the bikes are similarly prepared". We are talking about a class where the mettle of the S1 can be tested against other reputable twin, triple and inline-four cylinder race machinery. No silly rules, no factory cheater bikes. An honest knock-down drag-out winner take all series. While some sportbike fans may have mistakenly dismissed the "little" Buell, believing that a Harley-based machine is incapable of making a competetive racer, they are sorely mistaken. We hope. Such critics shall feel the roar of exhaust from our V-twin motor as we blast by them mid corner. When our knees touch ground, they will need chinguards as their jaws hit the pavement. The S1 derives from Erik Buell's background as a racer, and engineer. The lightweight yet rigid tubular perimeter frame wraps around the modified 1203cc Sportster motor. Buell's unique uniplanar mounting system reduces and controls the normally raucous shaking of the Harley powerplant. The wheelbase of the Lightning is 55.0 inches, with 25 degrees of rake and 3.9 inches of trail, providing a flickable, yet stable platform for a racing machine. Ex-Formula-USA Champion Chuck Graves rode the bike at the track and said, "You can tell the Buell engineers did their homework with the S1. The handling is quite different than the S2. The Lightning has a lighter feel into corners and requires less countersteering effort than the Thunderbolt."
