Welcome to the web site of Jim Blanchard; Motor sport Illustrator.
All the prints and illustrations on this web site are from original paintings by myself. Many are limited editions and some are sold out. Even my 'open edition prints' are restricted to one print run. We supply art work and limited edition prints on a mail order basis and attend shows and events most weekends. All prints are usually dispatched within 24 hours, or the next working day.
Prints are delivered in a strong postal tube, though we will always replace transit damaged prints free of charge. Enjoy your stay, and please do call back soon, as the site is updated with new prints on a regular basis with new additions. We have provided hundreds of satisfied customers all over the world. (Testimonials) 'We' are a one man operation but I must include and mention my wife Denise, who deals with most of the business side and takes the telephone orders, and of course sells at the various events we attend in the course of a year. If you do call, your more likely get Denise answering. We accept all major credit cards, though we prefer to 'talk to our customers personally' if we can and our site is not therefore only set up for electronic selling. Though, if you prefer to purchase that way we have the facility of using paypal (part of ebay) which is a totally secure method of purchasing from us online and is of course completely free.

Motorcycle Racing Is A Family Tradition With The Longs
Written by: Andrew Booth
It was father versus son Monday at Daytona International Speedway.
The 19-year-old Barrett Long beat his father John Long and the rest of the field of competitors in the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association’s Battle of the Twins Two-Stroke class. Barrett is the third generation of Longs to race motorcycles at Daytona.
John’s father raced on the old beach course in the 1940s and early ’50s. John was a leading AMA road racer in the 1970s; he was runner-up in the AMA Superbike Series in 1978. Now a third generation of Long is getting his racing career underway. Barrett will be racing in Saturday’s Pro Honda Oils Supersport race and is planning to compete in the entire series. The youngest of the Long clan is carrying on a long tradition of the family of racing motorcyclists from Miami. John runs the family-owned motorcycle shop that was founded by his father in 1939.
With a father as talented as John Long, one would think Barrett would have much to learn from his famous dad.

    Chapter 3

As board track racing was becoming the most popular motorcycle sport in the United States, it was a natural consequence that the two partners would join forces with the prominent builder of wooden tracks, "Jack" Prince, to construct a "home-town" motordrome. With an ownership in Springfield’s new 1/3-mile pine-board "drome," Hendee and Hedstrom would not only have control of their local arena, but they would also have a "test-track" for their factory team. At least this is what they thought in the summer of 1909, on the eve of the opening of Springfield Stadium.
Morty Graves in the lead at Springfield, Massachusetts Boardtrack, 1910
But a race isn't a race without competition, and in each one of the dozens of fledgling motorcycle manufacturers that had "sprung up" across the country, there were men who dreamed of success on the race track, a victory that would lead them to success in the marketplace. One such man was Ignaz Schwinn, immigrant, self-made millionaire kingpin of the bicycle manufacturers, who within two years would challenge Indian’s supremacy. There were other men who had dreams of winning races, young men who could hear the roar of the crowd in their imagination, and envision the paycheck that they would earn for their exploits. It was not money or glory alone, however, that had captivated these youngsters. Each boy had somehow "caught the fever" to race a motorized steed, a passion that was unimaginable to the generation that had preceded them. One such boy was "Jake" DeRosier who was born in Quebec, Canada in 1880.

    The Isle of Man
The Road Racing Capital of the World
Motor racing first came to the Isle of Man in 1904 when the Gordon Bennett car trials were held. In England it was impossible to close the public roads for racing, so a proposal was put to the Isle of Man government. The government brought in new legislation to enable the closing of public roads for racing, and the Isle of Man was ready to take up the mantle of The Road Racing Capital of the World Motorcycle road racing first came to the Isle of Man in 1907 when the first TT races where held on the Short Course. This was a triangular course with the start at St John's. The riders proceeded along the course to Ballacraine before turning left and following the current TT course through to Kirk Michael. At Douglas Road Corner in Kirk Michael, the Short Course left the current TT course and followed the coast road to Peel, before turning left again and heading back to St John's. In 1911 the racing moved to the Mountain Circuit. The Mountain Circuit is some 37.73 miles long and runs from the start in Douglas on Glencrutchery Road in a westerly direction through Braddan, Union Mills, Glen Vine and Crosby until it reaches Ballacraine. At Ballacraine the riders turn right and head north through Glen Helen, Kirk Michael, Ballaugh and Sulby to Ramsey, some 23.5 miles from the start. The riders swing south and head up the daunting Mountain climb rising from Sea level in Ramsey to some 1400ft at the highest point at Brandywell, before descending the mountain and heading back to Douglas.

The History of Motorcycle Racing on the Historic Half-Mile Dirt Racetrack at the Cowley County Fairgrounds, Winfield, Kansas The racetrack at the Cowley County Fairgrounds was originally laid out in the summer of 1872 and has been used for horse racing off and on since the fall of that year. The corners were dredged out in the summer of 1883, more so near the inside of the track to give the effect of a slight banking to the turns, thus making the racetrack into a rare "dish" oval. The size, shape, and location of the racetrack have not been altered since but flood sediment has filled in some of the original dish bringing the racing surface up almost to ground level. The track lies just a couple hundred yards east and north of the Walnut River and outside the dike protecting the city of Winfield so the racetrack is often covered by flood water. The track surface is mostly silt which does not pack down well so the racing surface has always been very dusty. In the early 1900s at Winfield, motorcycles were raced on the same program with automobiles with races alternating between an auto race and a motorcycle race. The following list of race dates and winners may not be complete. Race results from some of the dates that are listed have yet to be located. To see what results are currently known, click your mouse on the race date at left.
