News Why we run marathons October 31, 2001: 12:48 p.m. ET Sunday's 26.2 mile race is a test of will that can be agony - but we love it. By Martine Costello
  • A survivor's marathon dream
  • Special report: New York City Marathon NEW YORK (CNNmoney) - The last few miles of a marathon could be some of the worst pain you'll ever feel. Your aching, sweating, weather-beaten body is depleted of glycogen and screaming at you to stop moving immediately. You're running on guts. On fumes. Your muscles twitch. You throw up. You're delirious. But you keep running because there's no way out of this hell you're in, because there's no way you're not crossing the finish line. It's a misery that non-runners don't understand. They don't understand why we get up at 5 a.m. to run under the moon and the stars, or why we spend thousands of dollars a year on running shoes, race watches, microfiber shorts and jog bras. They don't understand why we run ourselves into the ground with hamstring injuries and tendonitis, spend months getting healthy and then get hurt all over again. They don't understand why we don't mind keeping the physical therapy industry in business.

Willie Wick, Quincy, MA 5. E.H. White New York T he 1920s was a time to let loose for America. We had just won the Great War and people were ready to indulge in materialism and good times. It was also a hallmark year for the Boston Marathon, which was announced by the Olympic Committee to host the Olympic marathon trials. Since Trivoulidas and Wick were not U.S. citizens, they couldn't represent the Olympic Team. However, Roth, Linder, and Conboy did represent the U.S. in the Antwerp, Belgium Olympics. Sixth-place Robert Conboy ran with his battle wounds exposed, a grim reminder to spectators of what had happened overseas. The running conditions were captured in the prose of Globe reporter Lawrence Sweeney describing a runner's face as "blackened with dust, gasoline fumes and perspiration." From the Boston Globe, Tuesday, April 20, 1920

The Marathon Story. The Battle that Changed Human History. By Paul Ostapuk. Setting the Stage The first two decades of the fifth century
    http://www.lakepowell.net/marathon.html
    The Marathon Story
The Battle that Changed Human History
    By Paul Ostapuk
    Setting the Stage
The first two decades of the fifth century B.C. marked one of the great turning points in world history. These were the years of the Persian and Greek wars. The powerful Persian Empire in 546 B.C. extended from Asia to Eygpt to what is now Turkey. This great empire built the first Suez Canal which linked the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea.
Greece on the other hand, consisted of a scattering of independent city-states, called poleis. These early city-states spawned the democratic ideas that have persisted into modern times. Athens eventually became the largest and most prosperous polis. Another Greek polis, Sparta, was not so democratic. They kept their kings and maintained a conservative, regimented society built around military training and the art of war.
    The Persian/Greek War
The Persian Empire over the years expanded to the Mediterrean Sea. In the process some Greek settlements were conquered. Ionia was one such settlement. After many years, they tried to revolt against the Persians but the uprising was immediately squashed by the powerful Persian Army. By the year 490 B.C., the Persian Army was ready to expand their territory and move into Europe. They landed a large force just outside of Athens on the plains of Marathon and prepared for attack.
    The Role of Phidippides
The Athens, vastly outnumbered, desperately needed the help of Sparta's military base to help fend off the attack. Time was short, so the Athenian generals send Phidippides (or Philippides) a professional runner to Sparta to ask for help. The 140 mile course was very mountainous and rugged. Phidippides ran the course in about 36 hours. Sparta agreed to help but said they would not take the field until the moon was full due to religious laws. This would leave the Athenians alone to fight the Persian Army. Phidippides ran back to Athens (another 140 miles!) with the disappointing news. Immediately, the small Athenian Army (including Phidippedes) marched to the plains of Marathon to prepare for battle.
