Reborn marathons
by Jonathan Beverly
During the running boom of the late 1970s and early 1980s, marathons sprouted throughout the country in places like Philadelphia; Madison, Wisconsin; and the Jersey Shore. A decade later, these marathons and many others existed only in the memories of aging running boomers. Today, a new marathon has been born in each of these locations, giving evidence of a new running boom and a new generation of marathoners.
races in trouble
Marathoning on the Jersey Shore began in 1972 in January with an out-and-back course. "It was cold! Cold and windy," remembers Bob Glover, author and coach at the New York Road Runners Club, about the 1976 race. Indeed, records indicate a wind chill of 15 below zero that year. Despite the daunting conditions, the race increased from 120 starters in 1972 to 560 in 1977. "Like many runners in those days, I ran 5 or 6 marathons a year," Glover explains. "Jersey Shore was a stepping stone to Boston, a training run. Of course, you don't do that unless you're pretty serious." After the race date was changed to December in hopes of having better weather, the field increased to a peak of 3,050 starters in 1978. The higher numbers, however, led to controversy with Sea Bright, whose main artery was blocked by runners. With the race barred from Sea Bright's narrow isthmus, the course changed to two smaller loops. In 1982 the date was moved back another month to mid-November, putting it in direct competition with the burgeoning New York City Marathon.

I've run a marathon and it was hard. Then I learned about ultra marathoners doing 50 and 100 mile runs in one day. Then there are the marathons and ultra marathons in rough places, like Death Valley. Then there's the grand daddy of difficulty: The Marathon Des Sables . It's 6 days and 6 marathons long, run in a desert with temps topping 110F, you have to carry your week's gear and food, and you are limited to 9 liters of water a day. Here are some photos and blogger Ben Hammersley 's current results are here . The event finishes tomorrow. [via jay allen

Training tips Fuelling a marathon Warning: marathon risks Serious dangers Video : the London Marathon Quiz : test your marathon trivia Vote : could you go the whole way? Timeline of events Key Points It's a long, long way. The modern marathon is run over 26.2 miles or 42.195 km The marathon is the only discipline in athletics to have become a popular participation sport After 20 miles many inexperienced runners 'hit the wall' , an infamous experience suffered when their bodies have run out of fuel Some people find it easier to 'marathon' than others. This is partly due to their genes Born to marathon? Some people are better adapted to marathon running than others. This might be by virtue of their build, physiology or mental approach. There is one crucial feature marathon runners must have to stand a chance of competing at the highest level. The right kind of muscles. Marathon muscles There are two different kinds of fibre in muscle:
  • 'Slow twitch' fibres - these contract slowly but they can keep going for a long time 'Fast twitch' fibres - these contract quickly but are rapidly worn out
'Slow twitch' fibres are the key to successful marathon running. If a person has a preponderance of fast-twitch muscles there is no chance of him or her becoming a world-class marathoner. They might however make an ideal sprinter. The marathon runner needs to have a large proportion of slow twitch fibres in their muscles. This characteristic is largely inherited but there is some evidence that training can make a small difference to the proportions of the different fibre types. Findings suggest that a marathon runner must avoid any sprint training at distances less than 100m. Likewise sprinters must never engage in endurance exercise.
