Dance marathons were also known as Continuous Motion or Derbies. legend c=couples, s=solo. marathons, Date, Location, Hours, Couples.

Dance Marathons ( continuous motion ) or "Derbies" can be traced back to 1364 in London and became extremely popular during the depression years (1920s-30s) as many out of work people would compete for money prizes, as well as stars of some kind seeking publicity, OR basically anyone could enter. Most of the music that was played was slow, but once or twice an hour they would pick up the beat ( called Sprints ) and they were required to dance the dance of the music, sometimes for extra cash or prizes. The general rule was you could not fall asleep, while some contests allowed one part of the team to sleep so long as the other held them up and / or kept moving. As time in the contest continued, resting times would go from the 1st week - half hour, 2nd week to fifteen minutes, then ten minutes, then five minutes, then three minutes to none, while some marathons would be danced sixty minutes then rest for fifteen. There were many variations, but you get the idea.
The marathon consisted of a emcee, Band and or Phonograph player, Nurses, a Doctor, some Cots, a Dance floor, Contestants, Manicurists, Barbers and Podiatrists, etcetera. Some contestants were professional dancer/actors etc. Not all entrants were there to win, some were placed (

Brit running 7 marathons after heart attack
Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Marathon Antarctica London or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? LONDON, England (Reuters) British explorer Ranulph Fiennes has set off for the Antarctic to start his latest challenge running seven marathons in seven days on seven continents less than five months after suffering a near fatal heart attack. Fiennes, 59, and Dr Mike Stroud, 48, left Britain late Tuesday for the wilds of Antarctica where they will start the challenge on October 26 before, weather permitting, finishing 168 hours later in New York's Central Park. After Antarctica, the two men plan to go the 26.2 mile distance in Santiago, Sydney, Singapore, London and Cairo before arriving in New York to join the thousands of runners in the city's annual marathon November 2. "I don't think it's a crazy idea," Fiennes told reporters as he left Heathrow airport. "I think it is probably OK, as long as you keep your heart beating at what the doctors say is the maximum and not more." The explorer and former special forces officer underwent emergency double-bypass heart surgery after collapsing June 7, prompting his doctors to set a low heart-rate limit for each marathon of 130 beats per minute.

Yearly Marathon
Each year staff members volunteer to be on a marathon team for the Hood to Coast Run/Walk. Some walk/run longer, more vigorous parts; others just provide van support. One person drives to the coast and rents a house with a hot tub and everyone gets to end there [Note: This is the first mention of a hot tub in the Great Ideas. D. L. ]. Goldfish Race Fundraising Activity
A fun fundraising activity we recently had was a goldfish race. Two 10-foot long rain gutters are placed side by side. Caps are glued to each end so that they will hold water. A goldfish is placed in each gutter and is held at the end by a removable gutter-shaped gate. Two children are given 1 straw each and are instructed to blow behind the fish and into the water to encourage the fish to swim to the other end of the gutter. The winner gets to keep his/her fish. Can charge $1 per entry or thereabouts. Walla Walla Community Hospice, Walla Walla, Washington
