History
Bowls historians believe that the game developed from the Egyptians. One of their pastimes was to play skittles with round stones. This has been determined based on artefacts found in tombs dating circa 5,000 B.C. The sport spread across the world and took on a variety of forms, Bocce (Italian), Bolla (Saxon), Bolle (Danish), Boules (French) and Ula Miaka (Polynesian). The oldest Bowls green still played on is in Southampton, England where records show that the green has been in operation since 1299 A.D. There are other claims of greens being in use before that time, but these are, as yet, unsubstantiated Images show antique set of wooden bowls from

The day-to-day affairs of the Lawn Bowls section are looked after by the section committee , which is headed by the Lawn Bowls Convenor, who also sits on the Club's General Committee . A number of Bye-Laws govern the activities of the section, player conduct and dress and the usage of the Club's bowling greens.

If you're looking for something to do that's a little different, but still plenty of fun, I can highly recommend an afternoon of Lawn Bowls at the Merthyr Bowls Club in New Farm. The Ging had bowled before, but I was a newbie - as were the 10 or so other people who came along to farewell young Bronwyn's 29th year. We received a run down of the rules of the game, a quick demonstration of which way the (weighted) bowl will curve, and expectations about our behaviour (no shoes on the green, no 'driving', beer is allowed on the green - but don't put your glass on the grass).

Lawn bowls what's it all about then? Is Lawn bowls derived from "upper class roots" and has it become a game primarily for stuffy well off bods from the "leafy suburbs"? Decide for yourself. Here you will find flat listings of the whereabouts of Bowls clubs. Addresses and research information to give you a brief insight into the game. For hardened pros and newly hooked amateurs you can link direct to the official (as far as we know) lawn bowls web-site.(further down page) Please use your [back] browser button to come back to us for a lot more information on entertainment available in your area and across the UK. Who can play ? Although considered by many as a sedentary game reserved for the middle class retired. This is a myth and anyone can play. However to play at the top level you need to be fairly fit there is a lot of walking bending and stretching involved As for the class thing? Well there certainly are many "clickey close knit groups" around. Although in fairness, many recreation parks have a bowling green and if you get a group of you together you can hire the green and the kit between you for no more than it costs to ice skate or go to the Cinema. The aim of the game: You need to get your bowls closer to the jack (that’s the little white object slung down the green at the start). Than the opposition do. You score points for each one of yours bowls that goes closer to the jack than the closest opposition bowls delivered by the other side be it single or teams. You must direct your bowls from a special mat and there are limits on the distance the jack can be from the mats when starting each round known as "ends". A match can last 14, 15, 18 or 21 ends.

Lawn Bowls for Schools Program "Our students loved playing bowls."
- Woodleigh School "A wonderful experience for all concerned."
- Christian College, Geelong The RVBA and VLBA have initiated a Secondary Schools Lawn Bowls Program. This statewide program has the support of Sport and Recreation Victoria and is an important part of a broader initiative of the State Government to increase lawn bowls participation. The School Program is offered to both special and mainstream Victorian Secondary Schools. Learning how to bowl This lawn bowls program aims to:
  • Develop in students an understanding and appreciation of lawn bowls as a recreational pursuit. Provide students with some basic skills and knowledge of the game which would enable them to play lawn bowls at their leisure. Enhance the development of co-ordination skills and provide stimulating exercise for the students. As lawn bowls is a game of strategy, practice will also help develop strategic skills. Develop links between secondary schools and local bowls clubs so that students and teachers can continue to play bowls as a form of recreation.

Rules Summary
The standard bowling green is a 120-foot square, divided into six "rinks," each 20 by 120 feet. The surface is usually grass, but in some areas it is marl, a sand-clay mixture. The bowler must have one foot on a rubber mat, 14 by 24 inches size, when delivering the ball. The target ball, or "jack," is a white ball, about 10 ounces in weight, with a diameter of about 2 1/2 inches. Each bowler has two "bowls" (balls) between 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 inches in diameter and weighing no more than 3 1/2 pounds. The balls are usually made of lignum vitae, a very hard, heavy wood. They are not perfectly round; they bulge slightly on one side, enough to make the ball curve about 4 feet in that direction over a distance of 100 feet. This bulge is called the "bias." The first contestant to bowl first rolls the jack ball. If it doesn't go at least 75 feet, or if it goes out of the rink boundaries, the other team rolls it. The jack then becomes the target for all the bowlers. Having rolled the jack, the first bowler (called the lead) rolls two balls. Then the other team's lead rolls two balls, and so on until all balls have been rolled. It is permissible to knock an opponent's ball out of place. If the jack is knocked out of bounds, a player of the other team rolls it, while balls that have already been rolled remain in place.

Rolling injuries out of lawn bowls: a review of the literature
Monash University Accident Research Centre - Report #138 Full report in pdf format
Abstract:
Lawn bowls is a popular sport and leisure activity in Australia played by an estimated 75,000 to 80,000 Victorians. Health professionals recommend the sport to older people because it provides low impact, therapeutic exercise in a social and supportive atmosphere. There are no comprehensive data on lawn bowls injuries. Data from hospital emergency department surveillance systems revealed that presentations for lawn bowls injuries are uncommon. This is possibly explained by the lower physical intensity of bowls compared with other sports and the likelihood that bowlers may seek treatment elsewhere (for example from General Practitioners, physiotherapists and chiropractors ) or self treat their injuries. In total there were 29 lawn bowls injury cases recorded on the new Victorian Emergency Minimum Dataset (VEMD) and the superseded Victorian Injury Surveillance System (VISS). Approximately three-quarters (76%) of the injured players were female, indicating they may be at higher risk of injury because ABS sports participation data indicate they comprise only 39% of participants in lawn bowls. Injuries were caused by falls (59%, including trips and slips on the green during play, when traversing the ditch and on steps and paths in areas around the clubhouse or carpark); overexertion (31%, sprains and strains); and being struck by a bowl (7%). Injuries included: sprains and strains (35%); fractures (35%); cuts and bruises (23%). Eight of the 29 cases (28%), all female and aged over 60 years, were admitted to hospital.
