Lawn bowling for the blind was first introduced at an international level by Dr. Julius Sergay in South Africa in 1977. The then six playing countries, Australia, England, Canada, Scotland, Zimbabwe and South Africa were invited to play in the first World Championships and also to form an Interntional Association. The Association has steadily increased in membership and now has ten member countries. In addition to the previously mentioned six Israel, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Wales are members with efforts now being aimed at the USA, Africa and Asia to join the Association. The ten member countries boast a membership of some 5000 players which makes it the largest outdoor activity for the blind.
World Championships are held every four years and so far in addition to South Africa, England, Australia, Zimbabwe, Canada and in 1977. New Zealand have hosted the Championships. All three sight categories have individual championships for both men and women.
In 1994 blind lawn bowling was introduced in the Commonwealth Games and in 1996 in the Paralympic Games, and in both cases the concept was well received. Most countries employ a coaching system which allows the blind competitors to compete very succesfully with and against sighted players even at national level. Most World Bowling Board association endorse the participation of the blind in their greens and facilities available for all our players, be it local, national or international and we are grateful for this courtesy.

The history and rules of lawn bowling
Rules and history of lawn bowling! Lawn bowling by any name bowls, bocce, bowling on the green; is thousands of years old, yet today it remains popular world wide. Here's why.
"Bowls", "Bowling On The Green", "Bocce", "Lawn Bowling": by all of these names, lawn bowling has been around for several thousand years. Some rules have likely changed over that time, but the fundamentals seem to be consistent, certainly since the game's historic record was started in the 14th Century. bodyOffer(25683) Historians suggest the game made its way across Europe with Julius Caesar's centurions. At that time, and still today among Italians, the game was known as "bocce". By the 13th Century, "bowls", was entrenched in the British Isles. At the turn of the century, 1299 AD, the Southhampton Old Bowling Green Club was organized in England. The club remains active today, the oldest of record in the world. Global politics threatened the game for a time. In the 14th Century, it was banned for commoners in France and England because archery, essential for defense, was losing popularity. The Scottish were having none of it. In Scotland the game continued uninterrupted, a favorite among even such legendary notables as Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns. In Glasgow today 200 public bowling greens are in operation, including some enclosed greens for winter play. Today's rules, the flat lawn, and even a dress code, seem to derive from the Scottish. Over time, the waves of Scottish emigrants took their game with them and established clubs in many countries, the colonies of the Western Hemisphere among them.

Lawn Bowls
History
Lawn bowls, also known as lawn bowling or bowling on the green, is considered a quintessentially English sport. However, it probably originated in France. It may even have been brought over by the conquering Normans in 1066 or shortly thereafter, though there's no documentary evidence that it was. Like Italy's bocce and Provencal's petanque, lawn bowling originated in a game played by Roman soldiers, in which stones were tossed toward a target stone with the object of getting as close to the target as possible. Roman legions introduced the game to countries throughout the empire. Over time, the stones were replaced by balls that were usually rolled, rather than thrown. In France, the sport became known as boules , from the Latin word for ball, and the English world "bowl" came from that French root. The oldest known bowling green, in Southampton, England, dates at least to 1299, although other greens claim to be older than that. Henry VIII, himself a bowler, in 1511 banned the sport among the lower classes and levied a fee of 100 pounds on any private bowling green to ensure that only the wealthy could play. The main reason for the ban, as for similar bans on other sports, was that able-bodied men were supposed to spend their spare time practicing archery. The king's proclamation also noted that arrow-makers and bow-makers weren't being productive enough because of the time they wasted on bowling.

40. London And Southern Counties Bowling Association
Founded in 1895. It now has 293 affiliated lawn bowling Clubs spread over 12 Counties in the South of England.
