kyudo the Way of the Bow. kyudo, as taught by Kanjuro Shibata XX, is not a competitive sport and marksmanship is regarded as relatively unimportant.
http://www.zenko.org/kyudo.html
Kyudo - the Way of the Bow
Centuries ago in Japan, archery was regarded as the highest discipline of the Samurai warrior. Then, as the bow lost its significance as a weapon of war, and under the influence of Buddhism, Shinto, Daoism and Confucianism, Japanese archery evolved into Kyudo, the "Way of the Bow", a powerful and highly refined contemplative practice. Kyudo, as taught by Kanjuro Shibata XX, is not a competitive sport and marksmanship is regarded as relatively unimportant. According to Shibata Sensei, a master of the Heki Ryu Bishu Chikurin-ha school of Kyudo, the ultimate goal of Kyudo is to polish the mind - the same as in sitting meditation. "One is not polishing one's shooting style or technique, but the mind. The dignity of shooting is the important point. This is how Kyudo differs from the common approach to archery. In Kyudo there is no hope. Hope is not the point. The point is that through long and genuine practice your natural dignity as a human being comes out. This natural dignity is already in you, but it is covered up by a lot of obstacles. When they are cleared away, your natural dignity is allowed to shine forth" - Shibata Sensei.

Click on these icons to go to their respective homepages Home Who We Are Kyudo History ... Resources What Is Kyudo? Kyudo, which literally means The Way of the Bow, is considered by many to be the purest of all the martial ways. In the past the Japanese bow was used for hunting, war, court ceremonies, games, and contests of skill. The old word for Japanese archery was kyujutsu (bow technique) which encompassed the skills and techniques of the warrior archer. Some of the ancient schools, known as ryu , survive today, along with the ancient ceremonies and games, but the days where the Japanese bow was used as a weapon are long past. Modern kyudo is practiced primarily as a method of physical, moral, and spiritual development. No one knows exactly when the term kyudo came into being but it was not until the late nineteeth century when practice centered almost exclusively around individual practice that the term gained general acceptance. The essence of modern kyudo is said to be synonymous with the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty. Truth in kyudo is manifested in shooting that is pure and right-minded, where the three elements of attitude, movement, and technique unite in a state of perfect harmony. A true shot in kyudo is not just one that hits the center of the target, but one where the arrow can be said to exist in the target before its release.

KYUDO - THE WAY OF THE BOW
K yudo, the Way of the Bow, is one of Japan's oldest and most honored martial traditions. Over the course of Japanese history and under the influence of Shinto beliefs, Confucian morality, and Buddhist philosophy (including, but not limited to, Zen), the technique of archery flowered into the art of kyudo, where archery is practiced as a Way of seishin tanren , or "spiritual forging." The diligent practice of kyudo provides both healthful exercise and a way for cultivating self-awareness and spiritual maturity, eventually leading to the realization of "Shin Zen Bi", or "Truth, Goodness and Beauty" in the life of the archer. These qualities make kyudo an ideal way for modern people to maintain their physical and spiritual health and composure in an increasingly hectic world. Today, kyudo is practiced worldwide by more than half a million people. Kyudo classes are held under the guidance of Mr.

Books I recommend
These book help, but nothing replaces a good teacher Morisawa, J. S. 1984. The Secret of the Target. Routledge, New York and London.
This is the better book because it explains things in great detail. I like this book very much. Kyudo Manual. (1992?) Volume 1. Principles of Shooting (revised edition). All Nippon Kyudo Federation.
This book explains much more about etiquette and less about actually shooting the arrow, despite its title. It is available directly from ANKF for 3,000 yen. You can write or fax and they will send the book and an invoice. Volumes 2 and 3 are not translated.

Part one - what got me going
I first started to learn kyudo in 1988 when friends at work (University of Tsukuba) invited me to join their club. The club - called the Sakura Kyudo Kai - was held at the university kyudo dojo, quite close to my department. The members consisted of all kinds of people, not necessarily connected to the university. Any new member was welcome. I was lucky that the university had a rather salubrious 12 target dojo, with a small three target dojo at the side for special purposes, including the Sakura club. I became good friends with the professor of kyudo, Mori-sensei, and he allowed me to come and practice any time, so I often came lunchtimes.
