Yet, some students feel that they can only learn from a Korean. However, this assumption can cost you time, money and skills. For several decades after the Korean War many Asian martial art instructors immigrated to the U.S., bringing with them traditional Asian fighting arts. Of the Korean arts, tae kwon do and hapkido were the first to come here, with kuk sool won making an appearance in the mid-1970s. Many Americans were overjoyed at the prospect of learning traditional Korean martial arts directly from the source-Koreans themselves. Throughout the years some of these American students reached instructor status and opened their own traditional martial arts schools. But for some reason, if an American opens a non-traditional, Americanized school, he's often considered creative and modern. Whereas, in the recent past, if an American instructor started a traditional martial arts school, it was often seen as second rate. But is that really the case? At least four kuk sool won instructors don't think so. They represent the cream of kuk sool's American crop of teachers and are successfully pursuing their martial arts livelihood across the country.
