JCU Volleyball Continues Dominance of Wooster (Sept. 25) The John Carroll Blue Streak volleyball program has the College of Wooster's number, and that number now reads 16. For the 16th consecutive time, JCU defeated the Scots in a volleyball match, this time by a 3-1 margin. John Carroll got its usual outstanding productivity from reigning OAC Player of the Week Beth Grzybowski, who pounded out a match-high 24 kills and was efficient in doing so as her .500 hitiing percentage would attest. Molly Barb (19 kills) and Gretchen Hess (10) also contributed to the offensive cause. Tracy Hobbs, filling in for the injured Beth Cooper as teh starting setter, dished out a season-high 59 assists. In only four of the previous 15 wins had Wooster taken a game from the Blue Streaks. After JCU won the first two games (30-28, 30-19) and had a late lead in the third, another sweep seemed likely. But the Scots won five of the last six points in the third game to win 32-30. John Carroll then buckled down in the fourth frame, took an early 7-2 lead and never trailed en route to closing out the match, 30-22. JCU (11-5) has now won six consecutive matches.

Volleyball joins the international movement to play it clean and kick tobacco out of sports
30 May 2002 "We are confident that our major international competitions in Volleyball and Beach Volleyball, and particularly our 2002 World Championships, have the power and the means to help spread the message that the use of tobacco and its health risks are completely incompatible with sport," said FIVB President Dr Rub©n Acosta. "Volleyball provides millions of people all over the world with fun, athleticism and exciting competition. We believe it is very important to join forces with WHO to make sure those people hear and understand the tobacco-free message." Tobacco advertising and sponsorship of sports twist reality to sell death as life, disease as health, and deadly addiction as the taste of freedom. Companies pump enormous sums into advertising and sponsoring sports events worldwide. In the U.S. alone, major domestic cigarette companies reported spending US$ 113.6 million on sports and sporting events in 1999. Tobacco companies cynically mock national advertising bans by advertising and sponsoring popular international sports events whose images are transmitted by satellite television, internet and international press. Flouting rising concern and public outrage around the world, tobacco companies continue to manipulate images of top international athletes and events to sell their deadly products. Examples include football in Malaysia and Uganda; snooker, golf and rugby in the UK; badminton and motorbike racing in Indonesia; tennis in Canada and Formula One Racing in countries around the world.

£Power Ups Catch the flying bonus sign and you'll get one of two power-ups to help you win the game! To catch a power-up, simply hit the bonus with the ball. A super-kick bonus sign looks like a small bolt of lightening and a super-cloning bonus sign looks like two circles. In the IR game, only the super-kick is available, but it is a standard feature (not a bonus). We also instructed the computer player not to use any of the power-ups; he is good enough without them. Power-ups last approximately one minute. £Super-kick When enabled, press "Date Book" hard button (configurable in Preferences, Kick item) and the player will execute a feet-over-head jumping kick,, trying to kick the ball really hard. If you manage to kick the ball with the player's legs, the ball will fly much faster compared to a normal kick (presumably such a ball will be hard to handle for your opponent). If you miss and kick the ball with the player's head or body (which is basically the same thing), it will result in a normal, non-enhanced kick.

Women's soccer
With three wins and two draws at home at the beginning of the season, women's soccer has risen to 13th in the NSCAA national rankings and has extended its homefield unbeaten streak to 52 games.
The Scots opened the season on Aug. 31 against fourth-ranked Wheaton (Ill.), who defeated Macalester 4–0 last season. Although Wheaton took the lead with a goal in the 34th minute, Macalester continued to press for the equalizer. Just five minutes from the end, University of Minnesota transfer Juli Montgomery '03 capped off a stellar debut with a free-kick goal from 30-yards out. Although it appeared that Erin Hoople '05 had given the Scots an overtime win, her goal was disallowed for a handball and the game finished in a 1–1 draw.
The next afternoon, Macalester, without Montgomery and forward Anna Gierke '04 once again saw their homefield unbeaten streak come perilously close to its end, this time against 11th-ranked DePauw (Ind.). Six minutes into the second half, goalkeeper Lisa Bauer '04 punched out a corner kick, but the clearance was well covered by the DePauw attack and headed in for a 1–0 lead. Again, Macalester fought back, as Alice Hacker '05 recovered a corner kick at the top of the box, trapped the ball, and delivered a clinical finish into the far upper corner in the 81st minute. Neither side could create enough offense in the overtime periods, so Macalester earned its second straight tie against a nationally-ranked side.

Dream Match to kick off the 21st century For college students, spring break is usually associated with wild excitement on a far off island. This year, for the Princeton football team, spring break was exactly that, except not in the traditional sense. On Saturday morning, March 17, Princeton traveled across the Pacific for a game that was billed as the "Dream Match to Kick off the 21st Century." The Tigers played the Kwansei Gakuin University Fighters, who were this year's Japanese collegiate runner-up and who have also played in the championship game 42 of the past 50 years. On Saturday, March 24, the Osaka Dome hosted the battle between two schools rich in football tradition. Football was the primary reason that the trip was made, but it was also an incredible opportunity for a cultural education in the meantime. Fifty-one players made the trip along with the coaching staff, support staff, athletic advisors, professors and academic fellows. The group traveled by bus around the Osaka area to historic sites, such as Himeji Castle and the Todai-ji Temple, and visited nearby cities including Kobé, Nara and Kyoto. The Kwansei Gakuin players were extremely welcoming and were even kind enough to take the players to some of their favorite hangouts. At times the language barrier between the players was difficult, but for the most part the KGU players had fairly decent command of the English language and were very eager to help communicate.
