In the daytime, it is a beauty shop, and normally gets busy about 12:30 at night. Welcome to Patong. Takraw is played in various versions in most parts of Southeast Asia . But perhaps no where else is this startling game, in which players must neither touch the ball nor let it touch the ground, played with the enthusiasm and vigor shown by Patong's star performers. Games are played in the courtyards of Wats, at fairgrounds, and (particularly during the kite flying season when there is little or no rain) and across from the Patong Hospital in special Takrow courts. The small and hollow rattan balls which are the essential-and sometimes only necessary equipment for a game are sold in rattan shops and sporting goods shops throughout the country. But that's not all. One can use elbows, shoulders, even the posterior. The more complicated and impressive your feats, the better your score (Or, if a score is not being kept, the better your audience's reaction : spectators can be demanding, if not downright ruthless, in their judgments).

Cheer, cheer for old Pulaski Tech
Its crowded classrooms could use more money. Some think football could be a way to get it, in a roundabout sort of way. And if it turns out a few studs for the Hogs, well, hey, what's the harm in that?
By jennifer Barnett Reed

September 5, 2003
Slog through all the hoopla over whether Pulaski Technical College should have its own football team and you'll arrive at this core truth: people either think college football is worth the jaw-dropping amounts of money spent on it, or they don't.
There are other elements in the debate - why the proposed team would play in War Memorial Stadium instead of closer to Pulaski Tech's North Little Rock campus, for instance, or why it makes sense to start with a big, expensive men's team at a school where the average age is 28 and the average gender is female.
But it all really boils down to the question of whether spending $200,000 a year on an 85-member football team is the best way to help Pulaski Tech financially, educate some kids who might not otherwise go to college and provide a steady stream of junior-college recruits for the state's 4-year college football programs.
Pulaski Tech's board of trustees will settle that question with a vote on Sept. 15 - a vote that appears to have a good chance of going in favor of football.

The game is sand volleyball in 16 different environments featuring 16 characters, each of whom are available as teammates or opponents. Feel the action as you Spike or Die with fabulous babes and guys with attitude. Up to four people can compete as they dive, spike, jump and lob the ball for total victory. When you think of Outlaw Volleyball several images come to mind: the tulips blooming outside of Amsterdam, the peaceful serenity of a Buddhist temple in Tibet and a quiet Alaskan snowfall in the middle of January are just a few of the things that will never find there way into this game. Get those out of your head. There is a good chance that one of the characters in the game would bitch-slap you for even mentioning cities they cannot pronounce. Outlaw Volleyball is intent on entertaining you in as many ways as humanly possible, and let me tell you, they do it quite successfully.

Select: This button is not used. On serves you can move your player anywhere along the baseline before you toss the ball. You can also aim the ball using the Direction Pad during a serve. Serving the ball One of the most important things to know in Volleyball is how to serve the ball. There are two types of serves, the jump serve and the flat serve. Practice both a lot, 'cause the only way you'll ever be able to kick the big butt is by knowing how to deliver a devastating serve consistently. Jump serve: Press A button to toss the ball, then B button to jump and B button again to hit the ball over the net. Flat serve: Press A button to toss the ball, then A button again to hit the ball over the net. - Receiving the ball Receiving: The landing spot of the ball is always indicated by an X, watch the ball's shadow to see how high it is flying. Press A button to Hit/Set the ball. Players will automatically hit the ball in the direction of their teammates on the first or second hit. They will try to hit the ball over the net on the third hit. Spike: The idea is to stand by the net and have your teammate hit the ball to you, then leap in to the air and smash the ball downward. A well placed spike is almost impossible to return. To Spike (press B button once to jump, twice to spike.) Blocking: The block is a great defensive weapon for stopping the spike. To block the spike you must position your man at the net. When your opponent is ready to spike the ball, jump in the air using B button and Block by hitting the A button. - Tips from the pros Hit them where they're not - The best way to score points is to use your Direction Pad to aim the ball to open areas on your opponent's side of the court. Since beach volleyball is a two-player team sport, you'll find plenty of open area's. Throw off your opponents rhythm - Hitting/setting the ball twich and then smashing it over the net is the norm in beach volleyball. Do something different occaisonally. Jump up and smash the ball right back over the net, or hit it back with only ONE set (instead of two). You'll catch your opponent off guard and maybe score that single point that means the difference between being a winner and being a wienet. Timing is everything - It's hard to spike the ball or jump serve if your timing is off. Hit the ball at the peak of your jump for the best results. Don't bury the ball - Sometimes when you hit the ball very hard it will get buried in the sand. Keep your kool because Sandy Claws the crab will come out and try to find the ball for you. He usually will not find it but when he walks off the screen, game play resumes. Never give up - To become a champ takes practice and determination. So don't be a chump. Don't give up! - Notice to American Video Entertainment customers Should you encounter any problems with this cartridge two important questions must be asked: a. Was your Nintendo control deck purchased after October of 1990? b. Does the cartridge play on other control decks purchased prior to Oct.1990? If the answer to both of these questions is yes then you probably have a control deck which was secretly modified by Nintendo to prevent some cartridges from working. In order to enjoy many fine products from independent American manufacturers, American Video Entertainment, recommends you get a control desk compatible with all legal games. If you do not, you will be prevented from enjoying many great, value priced cartridges. You have several options available to you: 1. We have included in this manual simple instructions which will provide any qualified TV repair technician with the necessary information to upgrade your unit. Hawai'i's Tony Ching, left, tries to block a kill attempt by Loyola-Chicago's Mike Alesch in the first game. A crowd of 3,065 in the Stan Sheriff Center watched the Warriors, who were using a system they implemented two days earlier, improve to 12-5. The Ramblers are 10-4. "We did a good job of adjusting considering how early (the system) was introduced," UH middle blocker Brian Nordberg said. Imagine UH's lineup as a six-slice pie. In the old system, Eyal Zimet's slice, or position, was opposite from setter Kimo Tuyay's. Last night, in a system known as "Reverse 5-1," Costas Theocharidis played opposite and Zimet moved to outside hitter.

Johnson Deer Hunter Lives! Volleyball For The Masses Power Spike Pro Beach Volleyball is priced to move quickly at $24.95. The packaging is actually very good for a game at any price. The box has a very nice picture of Ms. Reece gracing its cover. Opening the box reveals a very thin manual and a game CD-ROM in a paper sleeve. Seems like a lot of wasted trees to me, but maybe presentation is everything in value gaming land. The system requirements are modest, but not so modest that any PC can run the game. It requires at least a Pentium II 300, 32 MB RAM, and a 4X CD-ROM to run. The recommended hardware is a Pentium III 450, 64 MB RAM, 16X CD-ROM, and a 3D video card. Not very "value" recommendations, but it seems that even those trying to save money on their games need to do some upgrading this time around. Power Spike Pro Beach Volleyball uses DirectX 8.0, so we're not talking about a completely stripped down piece of programming. Next: Spike!

Jayhawks kick Kangaroos in three games
KU volleyball improves to 10-1 heading into showdown with Nebraska By Levi Chronister , Online Sports Editor Tuesday, September 19, 2000 After a one-day break, Kansas University came out sluggish but still swept University of Missouri-Kansas City, 15-10, 15-9, 15-4, in volleyball Monday at Horejsi Center. The layoff was apparent early in the first game as KU (10-1) fell behind 3-0 before fighting back to a 4-4 tie and then scored 11 of the next 17 points to take a 1-0 lead in the match. "We took a day off (Sunday) and I think some of that was trying to get back in the flow a little bit," KU coach Ray Bechard said. "It was not a clean game one at all." An 8-1 run in the second game gave the Jayhawks a 10-4 lead and KU went up 14-6 but had trouble putting the Kangaroos (3-8) away. UMKC staved off six game points before Jordan Garrison spiked the ball for the game-winning point. Garrison, a freshman from Aurora, Ill., was playing because senior middle blocker Danielle Geronymo was suffering abdominal pains. Garrison finished with eight kills and three block assists.

Russian takes kick-boxing world title
A world title fight for the professional kick-boxing 72.5 kg weight category was held on October 4th in Lipetsk near Moscow. Russian Dmitry Likhodumov beat Eugene Valerio from Great Britain with a technical knockout in the fifth world. Valerio had held the title since 1998.
The contest was to consist of 12 two-minute rounds. However, by the second round it was clear that the bout was never going to go the distance. Having found his opponent's weak spot, Likhodumov pounded Valerio with a series of accurate blows that left him defending desperately.
The British champion was obviously not expecting this turn of events and his choice of tactics proved to be unsuccessful. In the fifth round Dmitry achieved a technical knockout with a fierce kick.
Eugene Valerio had fought twenty professional bouts in his career, while Likhodumov had featured in half that number. During the press conference that followed, Valerio pointed to the Russian's considerable skill. According to him, Likhodumov is very strong and highly professional.
