Local boat launches that allow access to the Colorado River include the Topock Gorge Marina, Arizona (exit 1, I-40), Park Moabi (located 11 miles south of Needles, CA on I-40), Havasu State Park at Windsor Beach (on London Bridge Road in Lake Havasu City). There are many other private and public boat launches along the Colorado River. Paddlers can enjoy a down river experience by launching at either Topock Gorge Marina or Park Moabi and paddling through the Havasu Wilderness Area. Castle Rock, located at river mile 220, is a designated take out area for non-motorized boats. Access to the Castle Rock parking area is off of Vista Drive in the community of Crystal Beach. http://www.jhu.edu/gro/GROGuide/groguide02/7-6.htm
Kayaking and Canoeing Canoeists and kayakers can find various fun at the Gunpowder Falls Patapsco Valley , and Susquehanna State Parks with a mix of flatwater and various degrees of whitewater conditions. The Potomac River is runable for much of its considerable length although some sections will involve portages around more exciting rapids and dams. Harper's Ferry, 90 minutes from Baltimore, is home to some very scenic, mild whitewater at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. There are several outfitters there and several outfitters which run float, raft and kayak trips. For wild birds, ponies and fine flatwater paddling, Assateague Island is unsurpassed, and canoes can be rented on the Bay side. Sandy Point Park on the bay, less than an hour from JHU, rents boats and you can enjoy sheltered ocean boating. There is even a boat launch in the Baltimore Harbor for those who don't mind paddling around with the Water Taxis (not for the faint of heart!). Great! But where can I get a boat to use? Hudson Trail Outfitters in Towson (410-583-0494) has a pair of canoes for rent for $25 dollars per day. On busy weekends, they go quickly, so calling a week or two in advance is a good idea. For those interested in white-water boating or rafting, three of the nation's premier white-water venues are located within a day's drive of Baltimore: the

Watch the excitement or experience the thrills of the Nantahala River by rafting, canoeing or kayaking.
http://www.westernncattractions.com/attractn/nantahal.htm

Nantahala River Rafting The Nantahala River offers the thrill and excitement of riding the river rapids in a raft, canoe or kayak. Eight miles of waves and swift, clear currents make the Nantahala River a delight for almost all ages interested in learning whitewater rafting. The trip takes a little over 3 hours and contains several class I and II rapids, with an optional class III at the end. No matter if you go-it alone or with a guide, it will be a memory you'll treasure for a lifetime. Please note that in my extensive research I have found that no one under the weight of 60 lbs. is allowed to ride down the Nantahala River. Also, the above photo is a picture of rafters taking the Wesser Falls during competition. These falls are not open to the public for rafting without a guide and special arrangements.
Tuckaseigee River Rafting

Sunrise on Capers Island, a wild barrier island off the coast of South Carolina. Carolina Heritage Outfitters : If you're planning a trip to the Edisto River in South Carolina, I highly recommend the services of this superb outfitter. They have kayaks, canoes, shuttle service, and also offer some of the most unique accomodations I've ever stayed in - a treehouse that sits 25 feet above the river in a wildlife refuge. There's also a cabin in the woods behind the treehouse, and a group camping area beside the river upstream from the treehouse. Try it out for a once-in-a-lifetime experience on the blackwater of one of South Carolina's prettiest rivers. Coastal Expeditions : Located in Mt. Pleasant, north of Charleston, SC, these folks offer some incredible barrier island tours, along with kayak and gear rentals at very reasonable prices. They're a friendly bunch, going way beyond the usual to provide you with an exceptional experience. If you'd like to visit some of the wild barrier islands, or explore some of the old rice plantations near Charleston, drop by first at Coastal Expeditions SeaYackers Sea Kayak Club : Paddling the waters of the Southeast.

Touring in Schuylerville:
On the Hudson and Battenkill Rivers by John Miller Here, the Hudson River provides various routes and can be enjoyed many times. This section of the Hudson River is a part of the Champlain Canal, a branch of the Intracoastal Waterway. It usually is quiet and there are seldom motorboats. The speed limit for motorboats is 10 mph, unless they are pulling a waterskier. I have yet to see a waterskier and generally there is little boat traffic, making this area pleasant for paddling. The scenery is excellent with many trees and few houses. Each time that I paddle this segment of the canal system, I encounter numerous people fishing from shore and small boats. The people that live along the river are friendly and always willing to answer questions about the canal. At the Schuylerville put-in, there is a gentle grassy slope that provides easy access to the water's edge. The river flows north to south and has a slow current at this spot. During the summer months, the current is nothing to be concerned about. However, if there has been significant rainfall, the current may become stronger and more caution is advisable if you are not a strong paddler.
