Bengali Songs to the Goddess Kali Sagaree Sengupta Forms of the great Goddess known as Kali, Durga or Shakti have been worshiped in Bengal for many centuries( ). These and other goddesses surface in many forms of medieval poetry and narrative, but the uniquely powerful tradition of songs to Kali began in the eighteenth century with the poet Ramprasad Sen (1720-81). The worship of Kali, the terrifyingly bloodthirsty and naked incarnation of Shiva's consort Durga, had suddenly burgeoned in the early eighteenth century. One of the reasons scholars give for this upsurge in Kali's popularity is that she was the protective deity of "robber barons" who held sway over large parts of the Bengal countryside in an era when central Mughal power was weakening. Kings like Krishnachandra Ray of Krishnanagar induced their subjects to worship Kali as well. His and other princely courts around Bengal became centers of Kali-song composition, where court poets, as well as the ruler and his other courtiers, displayed their lyrical gifts. Kali songs often reach poetically and playfully into legal and administrative terminology, puns, and trade jargon. Kali devotees are not necessarily renunciants, and worldly concerns commingle with spiritual yearning in the songs. Human inadequacy is often lamented, and protests of the goddess's neglect of her human children abound. The very contrast between earthy metaphors and the goddess's terrific all-powerfulness produces the piquant liveliness of these lyrics. The attributes of the goddess that have made Kali into a cliche' of exotic horror to outsiders are used ironically in the poetic tradition which views her as a beloved, if unusual, mother.

Kali ("the black one") is the Hindu mother goddess, symbol of dissolution and destruction. She destroys ignorance, maintains the world order, and blesses and frees those who strive for the knowledge of God. In the Vedas the name is associated with Agni , the god of fire, who had seven flickering tongues of flame, of which Kali was the black, horrible tongue. This meaning of the word has meanwhile been replaced by the goddess Kali, the grim consort of Shiva Her appearance is fearsome: baleful eyes, a protruding tongue, and four arms. In her upper left hand she wields a bloody sword and in her lower left hand she holds the severed head of a demon. With her upper right hand she makes the gesture of fearlessness, while the lower right hand confers benefits. Draped around her is a chain of severed human heads and she wears a belt made of dismembered arms. As the Divine Mother she is often represented dancing or in sexual union with Shiva. As Bhavatarini, the redeemer of the universe, she stands upon the supine form of her spouse. She is also known as Kalikamata ("black earth-mother") and Kalaratri ("black night"). Among the Tamils she is known as Kottavei. Kali is worshipped particularly in Bengal. Her best known temples are in Kalighat and Dakshineshvara.

Shri Kalika Devi
O Mother, even a dullard becomes a poet who meditates upon thee raimented with space, three-eyed, creatrix of the three worlds, whose waist is beautiful with a girdle made of numbers of dead men's arms, and who on the breast of a corpse, as thy couch in the cremation ground, enjoyest Mahakala - Karpuradistotra, VII (Woodroffe tr)
Kali's paramount place of worship is in the cremation ground, preferably at the dead of night, on a suitable day of the waning Moon. Here, her nature becomes clear and apparent. For an adept in the worship, the whole world is a cremation ground, and She, the true form of time, who by herself creates and destroys all, is personified as the pyre. There, after life, all mortals and their wishes, dreams and reflections come to their fruition, a pile of worthless ashes. If you're a six year old child in the West and watch cartoons on TV, you have an idea who Kali is. She appears in various shows - almost invariably as an evil demoness who the badly animated superhero has to conquer. This is highly insulting to many Hindus, who regard her as the Absolute itself.

79. Swamiji
Swamiji has dedicated his entire life to the Divine Mother. He is the author of Chandi Path, kali Puja, Shree MaaThe Guru Goddess and other religious books.
http://www.shreemaa.org/swamiji.htm
He is a Saraswati, coming from the lineage of Adi Shankaracharya, living the life of a Brahmin, a knower of wisdom initiated by his Guru in 1976, in the worship of Chandi and the sacred fire ceremony, the yagya, as his primary system of worship and meditation, while undertaking great austerities in the process. Swami Satyananda Saraswati spent fifteen years walking across the length and breadth of the Himalayas of India. On his journey he became proficient in numerous languages including Bengali, Hindi, Latin, Hebrew, Pahari, Urdu and several dialects of Indian languages among others, and developed a deep passion for Sanskrit, and learning the systems of worship wherever he went. He knows the mountain pathways as well as he understands Sanskrit roots, and he makes the verses of his translation come alive with experience. Swamiji's teachings combine to make intellectual understanding a foundation upon which to erect our devotional practices. He teaches how an aspirant can move from the intellectual contemplation of the whys and hows of creating a discipline, to the practical applications of actually sitting for recitation of the Sanskrit texts, how to sit, how to breathe, how to become one with the Guru, one with the Goddess. Only when we hear and see, watch and listen to a qualified guru, only then can we inculcate into our own lives the tones of the Divine Mother.
