ADVANCED SEARCH JOUSTING TIPS Photo: a brave horse and a firm grip are essential if you want to be a good jouster. Courtesy of the Royal Armouries, Leeds. The Royal Armouries’ Top Ten Jousting Tips 1. Ride a horse that is trained for the job – that can run straight and is brave. 3. Make sure you have control of the lance at all times and it isn’t too heavy. 4. Don’t hold the lance too tight, as all your body movement is transferred to the lance. 5. Keep a firm grip on your lance for a stronger hit and so you don’t drop it. (NB: This is deliberately contradictory of the above, to show the difficulty of the technique). 6. Watch your opponent until the point of impact. 7. Keep the horse running close to the tilt rail. 8. Keep your seat in the saddle, as this helps you maintain your balance on impact. 9. Make sure your helmet is firmly on your head and you can see through the visor. 10. Make sure all your armour fits and doesn’t interfere with you or your lance. Jousting Over Oslo
A briefing by Stephen Cohen and Daniel Pipes
February 5, 2001
In connection with the Israeli elections, Stephen Cohen and Daniel Pipes met at a Middle East Briefing in New York City to debate the future of the Oslo process and the prospect of peace in the Middle East. The debate was moderated by Serge Schmemann of The New York Times . Stephen Cohen is an activist in "Track Two Diplomacy," which seeks to foster non-official contacts between hostile peoples. He founded the Institute for Middle East Peace and Development in 1979, and has served as its president ever since. He is also a National Scholar of the Israel Policy Forum. Daniel Pipes is director of the Middle East Forum and editor of the Middle East Quarterly . A former government official, Mr. Pipes is the author of twelve books and a columnist for The Jerusalem Post
Cohen: Implement Oslo

Israel cannot afford another failed prime minister. With the election of Ariel Sharon, it is important to consider how he might achieve success, and not collapse, as his two predecessors (Benjamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barak) did while trying to implement the Oslo accords.
Success depends on three variables. First, Sharon must ward off foes from within his own Likud party who seek to unseat him. Second, he must ward off those from the Labor party who wish to do the same. And third, he must handle the Shas party, which has been the Achilles heel of his two failed predecessors.

Liberalism is Jousting with Windmills
Nancy Salvato It’s a common trait of every generation to wax nostalgia about the way things were. Just last week my husband and I were pouring over a website called Tick Tock Toys-Archives and Galleries, a cavalcade of images and ideas http://theimaginaryworld.com/page4.html . We were having a lot of fun remembering Libby’s Fruit Float, Wacky Packs, Space Food Sticks, Frito Bandito erasers, and…well, I could go on and on.
For us, the 1970’s was a good time to be a kid growing up. We could walk outside at any given moment and find other kids who wanted to play. We’d be out all summer digging in sandboxes, building forts, and playing Running Bases. We’d spend whole afternoons at the pool diving into the water, playing Marco Polo, and doing underwater handstands until we had to come up for air. Evenings would slip into darkness as we ran around playing Flashlight Tag. Our socializing was only interrupted by the ringing of the dinner bell, and after eating with the family we’d be right back with our friends riding bikes, shooting baskets, and playing Hide N Seek,
Who could have imagined that today’s kids would have to arrange play dates and join organized sports in order to get together and have fun? Who would have thought that short cuts would have to be abandoned because child molesters would have the right, sanctioned by our courts, to be our neighbors?
