What is Medieval jousting? Medieval jousting is the state sport of Maryland; knights began jousting in America in 1821. Jousting began in 11th century France as a military exercise and soon spread throughout Europe. Despite Church opposition for its savagery and occassional state banishments jousting continued through the Middle Ages until the death of King Henry II of France from jousting injuries in 1599. Its revival, in a decidedly more humane form, occurred in Mount Solon, Virginia in 1821. Surely no sport in America has more romantic origins than jousting. A young Virginian maiden could not choose between the affections of two ardent suitors. Upon the advice of her uncle she decided to bestow her favor on the winner of a jousting contest. bodyOffer(25520) The site chosen for the joust was the Shenandoah Valleys spectacular Natural Chimneys for their resemblance to medieval castles. THE DEVIL'S HORSEMEN JOUSTING AT WARWICK CASTLE A number of special events are organised at Warwick Castle throughout the year. This page shows some scenes of the Jousting at a Medieval Festival weekend, featuring action by The Devils Horsemen jousting team. The jousting tournament at Warwick Castle takes place on an island in the River Avon, which is joined to the Castle by a bridge. As the scheduled time for the performance approaches, visitors at the castle gather on the island, around the jousting field. The Knights approach on horseback, crossing the bridge over the Avon from the castle. The Knights are each led into the arena by Vinrac, a rebel maiden (Simone Griffiths). The Knights present themselves for the joust. The Knight in red colours is Sir Bors (Butch Andrews). The Knight in green colours is Igor (Roger Moore). The Knight in yellow colours is Prince Hal (Michael Nicholson). The Moor is Azim (Emanuel Lafon). Jousting was popular in medieval times, although it is still performed in Renaissance fairs . The knights are each equipped with three weapons; a lance , a one handed sword , and a rondel . When one knight knocks the other off of his mount, he is declared the winner of the round. If both knights are knocked off their mounts at the same time, it is considered a tie; they then engage in sword combat, and the last standing is victorious. The knights usually jousted in a best out of three situation. The reward of the tournament was the hand of his choice of lady. Modern-day jousting competitions feature riders on horseback attempting to thread a lance through a ring. The rings become smaller as the competition progresses; riders who fail to capture a ring are eliminated until a winner is determined. Gleann Abhann's Knights Marshal then approved the use of these horses for our event Materials needed for a horse 50 Gallon Plastic Drum. Hand truck with 10" pneumatic tires 2 casters with 10" pneumatic tires 1 sheet of 3/4 Plywood Steel Channel 3ft long 2 X2 Lumber about 8 feet (we used scrap 2X4 and ripped it) 2X4 Lumber about 8 feet (we used scrap) 3 cargo straps(ratchet type) Straw Door mat (half circle for saddle) foam rubber (we used cushions off of a couple of couches we found on the side of the road) Suede leather Dry wall Anchors (heavy duty at least 1/4 inch bolt) Duck Tape (lots of it) Construction of the horses THE HEAD Once you have finished this, fill out his chest with the scrap foam and duck tape it down. We used just enough duck tape to hold it in place the covered it with the fabric from one of the cushions. Use The suede to give the horse some ears and a muzzle, Sorry No Pattern, but do your best it really helps the appearance. We also added some large plastic eyes THE TAIL Staple wire fencing (Chicken wire) over the opening so nothing can get in it. Then add at least an inch of foam rubber to protect the rider if he falls. We use more fabric from the cushions to hold the padding in place. Make sure you lap over the back with the foam and that you can't feel and sharp corners. With this completed the body of the horse is done. It is time to make the frame.
