    Highway Parasailing
Why not have cars towing people attached to hang gliders or parasails?
[vote for against Sitting in the back seat of a car, speeding along the lengthy monotony of a highway, can be tremendously boring. It makes one wonder, "Why can't I be parasailing right now?". Automobiles should be outfitted with winches and a good length of cable attached to parachutes or hang-gliders with a harness affixed so passengers can enjoy the excitement of being airborne. Also, an airborn passenger on a glider could cut his tether and glide to his destination once within proximity. A parachutist could aswell, but with less control and accuracy. Having cables extending out the back of automobiles would promote the safe driving habit of keeping a reasonable distance of the preceding vehicle on highways. The highways where this would be permitted should be free of power transmission lines and not cross the migratory patterns of sharp beaked airfowl.

    Wing Hut and Baby Innertubing
I had a really rough night, though Jet only woke up once. I had a rough time going back to sleep when I did have to get up to take care of him, as my brain was still occupied with John's troubles. So I was a little bleary as we all went into work. I just kind of wandered through my meetings, and afterwards, everything looked like I could figure something out with a memo or proposal. Woo. Now that I have a hammer, everything looks like a nail!! Funny that. Lunch was a whim. I wanted to eat Wing Hut hot wings, and I wanted to see, for sure, where, exactly, the park existed. We should have ordered and called in the order before we got there. We had to wait fifteen minutes, but it was a nice enough day that Cary and I went out and sat on the brick stairs and talked while we waited for our food. Cary's about to go off on a six week vacation, and he's pretty giddy with it. I'm glad. He really needs the break, and it'll be easier working with him afterwards. As it is, though, he's just happy that he can take such a long break and not get any backlash. It's such a nice thing. He and I talked about vacations, digital cameras, and the wonder of the Northwest coast. He's ending up around Portland for a big family reunion. John and I recommended visiting the huge sand dunes out there. We all piled back into the cars with the molten orange sauce peeking from styrofoam containers and headed out to the park. It turns out that the park was a good five blocks away from Santiago's and I don't think we could have found our way there without John, the way we were going. So I'm glad that we did get there, finally, and everyone agreed that it was a much nicer eating area.

Did you ever think so many kids would think of showering as a fun afternoon activity?! Friday afternoon was unusual free choice. Campers got to choose one of the following: paint ball balloons, wrestling, Scottish swing dance, beaded bookmark making, LickLog waterfall hike, ice cream churning, car wash (staff enjoyed that one!), card games. That afternoon we had Splash-h-Dash. The cabins had to compete to capture their colored discs without getting them wet if possible, but the counselors were doing everything they could to get them wet! And that evening we had Sounds of Chatuga. Ask your camper about it. Here are some hints: interesting sounds made by counselors, whipped cream in the face, ice cold water, vcr party, camp trivia questions, and more! Saturday the campers started their new activity schedule. That evening was the famous Chatuga Square Dance, everybody's favorite (yep, even the teenagers!). We had another lazy Sunday with free choice afternoon (after a heavy rainstorm during rest hour) and council ring with all boys cabins performing skits for us. Monday we were back on the regular schedule. A bunch of stars came to lunch since it was a Hollywood lunch (Marilyn Monroe, Indiana Jones, a hobbit, Audrey Hepburn, Brittany Spears, Elle Woods, the Hulk, and more)! And it was appropriate that we had our own bit of Hollywood that evening with the Talent Show.

    Float Trip from Hell
It was the end of summer. After all the hot, dry days, I needed some wetness. There's plenty of wetness on the Madison, I thought, and a lazy float down the river would be just the thing. Well, it all began innocently enough… When I woke up that morning long ago, I was surprised. Not by the fact that my dog Max had gotten into a skunk and was now sleeping next to me. That happened often enough. And not be the fact that I was actually in my own bed (a bit rarer of an occasion). No, I was amazed when I looked out of the window to see bright, blazing sunshine…on a weekend! Since I was working on a farm, weekends had little meaning anyway, but fortunately the farmer decreed that working on a Sunday (and it was) would guarantee that "the devil would getcha by the hind legs." Which meant that I wouldn't have to slave away on the farm (which mainly consisted of myself and fellow "worker" Kevin playing Best Man Falls in the hayloft). There's nothing worse than sweating at work under the hot sun. Strangely, there's nothing better than sweating at play under the hot sun. And that's what I was determined to do. First thing on the agenda (besides a tomato juice shampoo for the damn dog) was to gather the Innertubing Party. Hearty and stalwart volunteers all, the Party consisted of my friend (and fellow Scourge of Cottonwood Canyon) Darrell, the wild and somewhat dangerous Karen, Short Andy the Beer Drinker, my uncle John, a couple of sisters and Long Tall Jim.

When you take a canoe trip or enjoy the view from a Louisiana bridge, you're enjoying more than a simple physical attribute of the state. You're celebrating the primary natural force that built the soil of Louisiana and provided its spectacular array of outdoor pleasures.
First, of course, there's the Mississippi River, and there are many ways to enjoy the great river. Mississippi River cruises departing from New Orleans last from a couple of hours to a couple of weeks, depending on your preference. Ferries and bridges offer sweeping views for motorists. Historic Rivertown in Kenner, several River Road plantations, and restaurants and hotels in New Orleans and Baton Rouge provide access to adjacent levees for river viewing.
The other major rivers of the state are the Sabine, Red, Calcasieu, Ouachita, Atchafalaya and Pearl rivers. The Twin City Queen in Monroe cruises on the Ouachita; a reservoir on the Sabine has become Louisiana's most famous bass fishing hole; and the Whiskey Chitto, Pearl and Calcasieu provide some of the state's most popular canoe trips.
The Louisiana Natural and Scenic Streams System, administered by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, provides an inventory and measure of protection for 50 natural, undeveloped rivers and streams. Along those streams are 1,400 miles for boating and canoeing. The fastest innertubing rivers are in Southeast Louisiana, where campgrounds provide tube rental and shuttle service.

NEAA Provides Flurry of Opportunity ... and Fun By Steve Eazell
s I approached Mount Snow, Vt., site of the Northeast Acquirers Association (NEAA) Winter Meeting and Seminar the last five years, I was not surprised that it was snowing - same as last year. After all, I was high in the mountains of Vermont, deep in the heart of New England, at a place that is picturesque, breathtaking, peaceful, quaint, remote ... and it is Mount Snow. Why would a handful of bankers, acquirers, ISOs/MSPs and vendors come together in such a place to hold a miniature trade show? The Grand Summit Hotel and Conference Center is not your normal business setting. It is a winter retreat, a full-service ski resort located high above the hustle and bustle of the trappings of everyday tedium. This winter wonderland seems more like a place one goes to get away from it all, not a place for educational seminars and exhibition booths touting the benefits of credit card processing, check guarantee, gift cards and the like, but that is exactly what this meeting is designed to do - mix some serious business with pleasure. After a grueling, action-packed day filled with education, meetings, networking and vendor schmoozing, the conference schedules the following day for time to enjoy this impressive facility, with the day set aside for skiing, snowmobiling and a host of other winter diversions. This year's show took place February 5-6. The show starts on Wednesday, although for the early birds who arrive as early as Tuesday afternoon there are informal activities, such as innertubing, for families or whoever wants to join. Of course, there also are the unplanned activities taking place at the lobby bar - i.e., networking, etc.
