Figure skating
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Figure skating is an ice skating sporting event where individuals and mixed couples compete to try to perform the most spectacular and accurately-performed elements while skating to music. Figure skaters use skates which differ slightly from hockey skates, to perform spins, jumps, and other "moves" on the ice, often to music. There are international competitions for figure skating, such as the World Championships and figure skating is also an official event in the Winter Olympics Table of contents showTocToggle("show","hide") 1 Jumps

Jumps
There are six major jumps in figure skating. All six are landed on a right back outside edge by righthanded skaters, but have different takeoffs, by which they may be distinguished. The two categories of jumps are toe jumps and edge jumps. Toe jumps are launched by tapping the toe pick of one skate into the ice, and include (in order of difficulty from easiest to hardest):
  • Toe loops, which take off from the back outside edge of the right foot and are launched by the left toe pick (toe walleys are similar, but take off from the back inside edge of the right foot);

    Review By Selwyn Manning (info courtesy of International Concert Attractions, photographs courtesy of Jon Green.)
    Athleticism With a cast of Russian ice-skating champions, plus rhythmic gymnastics Olympic 2000 Gold Medallist Ioulia Barsoukova, Nutcracker on Ice presents world championship athleticism, classic fairytale magic, and the timelessness of Tchaikovsky. Friday’s opening premiere (September 5 2003) of Nutcracker On Ice at Auckland’s majestic Civic Theatre was breathtaking from beginning to end. To the sounds of Silent Night, a packed house was soon transported to another time, Christmas Eve, Russia in the palatial home of the Romanovs. From the first-act Christmas Eve party to the spectacular finale, Nutcracker On Ice brought all ages to a single place of enjoyment. The champion ice dancers bring a flair to Nutcracker that goes beyond the possibilities of traditional dance. Choreographer , Valeri Petcherski, himself an acclaimed soloist ballet dancer, has brought humour, mystique and championship Ice Dancing technique (with Olympic standard triple throw axels and lifts) to the classic-fairytale stage. The merge is a presentation of colour, spice, exoticism and innocence.
    Breathtaking The tale goes like this: “We can all remember the first time as children we were transported into the magical world of the fairytale, The Nutcracker. This enchanting story follows the young and beautiful Maria as she embarks on a Christmas Eve adventure with her Nutcracker Doll. The transformation of the Doll into a handsome Prince is enough to excite and intrigue every child's imagination. Ballet and music lovers all over the world have flocked to see productions of this love story time and time again…”

    Do you like the Olympics and dancing? Did you ever imagine dancing on ice? Then ice dancing is your kind of sport. You will see amazing moves on ice. If we were judges we know it would be hard to pick the winners! Each team of ice dancers (a man and a woman) must do four dances. Two of those dances are the same for all the ice dancers. They are called the compulsory dances and are worth 10 percent of their score. The other two dances are the original dance and the free dance. The original dance is worth 30 percent of their score and the free dance is worth 50 percent. At the 2002 Olympics the dancers will create their own original dance but they must use a Spanish medley provided to all the dancers. In the free dance the ice dancers are allowed to create their own steps to whatever music they choose. The ice dancers are judged on the dancer's unison timing, expression and accuracy and placement of their dance steps. Ice dancing is a little bit like the pairs competition in figure skating but there are more thing that ice dancers can not do. They've competed around the world and been on the front of a Cheerios' box - but Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz have never made it to the top of the world figure skating podium. The two ice dancers will try to dance their way to gold, yet again at the 2001 World Figure Skating Championships in Vancouver, BC. Shae-Lynn is from Ontario, Canada. She started figure skating when she was 7, after watching her brother play hockey. She decided to go into ice dancing when she was 15. Victor grew up in Switzerland. When he was a kid he loved skiing and played a lot of hockey. He became interested in ice dancing after seeing it on television. Victor and his family moved to Canada when he was 16 and he met Shae-Lynn shortly after. The two began ice dancing together in 1991. During their first year, the two won the National Junior Ice Dancing title. Since then, they've won seven national titles and have competed at six World Championships - winning four bronze medals. The pair's ice dancing moves have also taken them to two Winter Olympics, where they placed 10th in 1994 and 4th in 1998. If you're not familiar with ice dancing, it's a bit like ballroom dancing on ice and many people don't really even consider it a sport. (I mean it's not like

    Anjelika Krylova ( right ) said that ice dancing is all politics and political decisions, especially at the Olympics.
    (Joel Richardson
    The Post) With Russians Pasha Grishuk and Evgeny Platov solidly in the lead entering Monday's concluding free dance, tonight featured almost as much talk about ice dancing's judges as it did about its competitors. Canadian Tracy Wilson, a former Olympic and world medalist in dance and now a CBS commentator, said the judging of ice dancing has cast a black mark on the discipline. "We've seen skaters fall and win competitions based on past results," Wilson said. "There are issues undermining the credibility of the sport. It's got to be black and white like it is in pairs and singles. It's a sport I love, and it has no credibility right now." International rules prevent judges from commenting during competitions. "In dancing, there is not enough objective details to judge," said Tamara Moskvina, coach of the Olympic gold and silver medalists in pairs. "It is less objective than in pairs. In pairs you have lifts, throws, jumps, spins that you can judge."

    Models of stateliness on and off the ice, Christopher Dean and Jean Torvill of Britain have changed the course of ice dancing. (File Photo)
    We're talking about royalty. Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, the princess and prince of ice dancing. Their names are inscribed along with those of other historical personages in the city council. But her first name, alas, is spelled without the "y," an unfortunate oversight in as much as the ex-insurance clerk is the first woman to have received the honor. "Well," Dean said, "we can always start a rumor." They are so blond, so proper, so British in their matching blue pin-striped blazers, red, white and blue argyle sweaters and Olympic ascots. And so quiet that it's hard to make out the words, hard to understand what all the commotion is about. On the ice, well, that's something else. In the last three years, the years they have reigned as world champions, Torvill and Dean have revolutionized the sport of ice dancing. They may not look like radicals. But they are.

    Lithuanians file ice dancing protest Posted: Saturday March 23, 2002 6:40 AM
    NAGANO, Japan (AP) The Lithuanian Skating Federation has filed a protest with the International Skating Union over the fourth place finish of their ice dancers' final at the World Figure Skating Championships. In a letter late Friday to the ISU, Kasiemieras Starkevicius, the president of the Lithuanian Skating Federation said: "We felt the result for third place was clear for our team and we protest the third place awarded in a controversial 5-4 split to the Israeli couple." Galit Chait and Sergei Sakhnovski won the first medal for Israel at the world championships by coming in third while Lithuanians Margarita Drobiazko and Povilas Vanagas finished fourth. In a press conference Saturday, Vanagas was critical of the way ice dancing is judged. "It's just unfortunate that the judging system kills the competitive nature of the sport," he said. Russians Irina Lobacheva and Ilya Averbukh won the gold medal and Canadians Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz were second. More than 30 skaters and coaches from the ice dancing competition including American champions Naomi Lang and Peter Tchernyshev and French coach Muriel Zazoui signed a petition in favor of Lithuania's protest.

    The fact is that along with being an aspiring country and western singer, chain saw sculptor, and redhead, I have always wanted to be a cast member in the Ice Capades. Or at least skate like one. I may be a disaster at just about every team sport: a slow runner, a nervous cross country skier, and the kind of bicyclist who walks up even medium sized hills. But put me in a pair of size eight and a half figure skates, and you'll have a hard time getting me to take them off. I'm a skating fool. Understand, please: I can skate forward and backward. I can execute a figure eight, and I have purchased a pair of skin tight black pants to heighten the effect. And that's about the extent of it. But in my dreams lately, I am often on skates, and when I am, I am Katarina Witt, queen of last winter's Olympics. And so, in the daylight hours, I go back and forth over the ice, trying to execute a waltzjump, a spin, a backwards crossover. I'm black and blue from falling. And still I keep trying to get it right. A while back I revealed to my family that I was setting to music an ice dance I practice only when noone's around. "See that," one of my sons pointed out, when a friend was over the other day, and the two of them walked through the living room, where I was studying a tape I'd made of a special featuring the Olympic medalist, Brian Boitano. "My mom's going to do an act like that for us. "Well... " I said. Not exactly.
