It may look easy, but to dance on ice like the Olympic competitors takes years of practice and sacrifice. Video Learn About Ice Dancing Russian ice dancers Irina Lobacheva and Ilia Averbuckh have been skating together for nine years. They know about dedication. "When we started, Irina and I, (we were) maybe 5 years old, very young. We just kept practicing every day, every day practice. For us it's like normal, like walk in street," Averbukh said. Lobacheva and Averbuckh went into the Olympics as world bronze medallists. Four years ago, they left their home to train at the University of Delaware. Twelve of this year's Olympic athletes representing six countries have been trained at the university's Fred Rust Ice Rink. It was once the training site for gold medallist Tara Lipinski. "One of the reasons that we have such a large international group is because I hired two coaches from Russia, husband and wife Olympic champions of 1980, Natalia Linichuk and Gennadi Karponosov," Olympic coach Ron Ludington said.

Timeline the past, present, and future... If you look at an ice dance tape from 25 years ago along with a tape from today, you'd be astonished that it was the same sport. Ice dance had very little structure. Free dances were a jumble of different rhythms. Twizzles were unimportant. Dancers had to often do three compulsories at a competition. Speed was much less important. There was an OSP (Original Set Pattern) instead of an OD. Ice dancing was always just ballroom dancing on the ice. And then a couple from a small town in England went and changed all that. Now to be fair, didn't change all of that. But they did completely alter ice dance. They introduced the idea of just using one rhythm in the free dance. They told stories with their "dances," which often did not resemble what anyone would actually consider normal dancing. were classic ice dancers in many ways. Their foundations were in ballroom dance. However, they also emphasized speed and complicated footwork. Other recent change has been directly from the ISU. They now require ice dance programs to have "elements" much like free skating programs. Many feel this reduces the amount of creativity allowed in ice dance.

Ice dancing
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Ice dancing is a form of pairs figure skating which draws from the world of ballroom dancing . It became a Winter Olympic Games medal sport in 1976. It differs from "regular" pair skating by severely limiting throws and lifts. The British team of Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean famously won the Olympic gold medal in Sarajevo in with a dramatic free skate to Ravel 's Bolero which earned unanimous 6.0s in artistic merit.
