Friendliest Little Ice Festival in the Northern Rockies!
February 13-15, 2004
President's Day Weekend
Welcome to Southforkice.com
The Valley

The South Fork ice climbing is like NO other ice in the Northern Rockies. The Valley has literally hundreds of frozen waterfalls each year. Many climbers visit the Valley season after season and still haven't climbed many of the waterfalls here. Climbers leave here experiencing one of the largest concentrations of frozen waterfalls they have seen and climbed in the lower 48, returning home to tell others about this beautiful area, which is increasing the interest here on the South Fork each season. Since the days of the local pioneers, the Valley has been explored to find innumerable waterfalls identified, climbed and rated WI3-7.
Southforkice.com is an informational website to tell you about our Annual "Waterfall Ice Roundup" each Presidents Day weekend in February. We enjoy the many that attend each year that keep coming back to enjoy this magnificent, friendly and exciting place. The Valley has mountaintops that rise over 11,400 feet allowing for the vertical ice season to start as early as October and last through April. A special thanks to my family, climbing partners, Roundup participants, the Double Diamond X Ranch, event sponsors, local outfitters and air pilots for each year helping in the continued success of southforkice.com.
Enjoy your visit and climb safely.

Brief Biography
I was born in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho (USA), in 1945 and grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Between 1972 and 1997 I worked as a research scientist at the Freshwater Institute in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Most of this time I studied Canadian Shield lakes in Northwestern Ontario: From 1972 to 1980 I worked on the Experimental Lakes Area project (ELA, 50 km SE of Kenora, ON), an internationally renowned ecological research centre. Between 1985 and 1995 I was the senior scientist on the Northwest Ontario Lake Size Series project (NOLSS, near Red Lake, ON). Within Canada, I also worked briefly in Inuvik (Mackenzie Delta lakes, Tuk Peninsula lakes) and Yellowknife (Great Slave Lake). Internationally, I studied Lake Tanganyika (Burundi and Tanzania), Lake Victoria (Uganda), Lake Nyasa/Malawi (Malawi), and have lectured (in Spanish) in Spain, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and Mexico. When I'm not at work, I prefer to be outside: cross-country skiing, rock or ice climbing, bicycling, rollerblading, canoeing, bird watching, or taking pictures. If the weather is bad and I crave exercise, I go swimming, to an indoor climbing wall, or do yoga. Less active endeavours that I enjoy are studying the ancient Mayans and the Spanish language, listening to classical music, and playing with my computer.

157. Deep South Ice
Offers profiles of places in the Southeastern US that offer ice climbing.
http://www.inergi.com/~nick.parker/southice.htm
Deep South Ice
This page is primarily intended for southern climbers looking for info on how to get started ice climbing, and some good locations to try out the sport. If you're a veteran, you already know where and when to find southern ice, so this page may not do you any good. For more info on southern ice, make sure you check out Michael Crowder's CoolClimbing.Com Believe it or not, even in Alabama there's usually some climbable ice every year. The Alabama ice "season" (ha!) is a wee bit short in a good year it may last for a whole week. Tennessee and Georgia are better, but the mountainous western areas of North Carolina have a much longer and more consistent season.
Where do I find the ice?
Any rock north of Birmingham AL that is usually wet with groundwater seepage is a good candidate for ice in a cold winter. Shaded and/or north facing areas are best. Keep in mind that in the deep south it's typically the groundwater seeps that freeze up into climbs. It's very rare for southern waterfalls to freeze, but it does happen.
Alabama
Some of the best Alabama ice is found at Bankhead National Forest (about an hours drive south/sw of Huntsville). Bankhead has an abundance of wet rock, all of which is shaded. When you get there, check out the Sipsey River picnic area and the Bee Branch area.

158. Ice-climbing In Jasper National Park, Explore Jasper
Explore Jasper home page, ice climbing. But for those that dare, ice climbing is an exhilarating sport if you can call it that.
http://www.explorejasper.com/recreation/ice_climbing.htm
Ice Climbing
Some people come out to Jasper to look at the frozen beauty of the park's waterways in the winter. Others see an adrenaline-pumping climb up an icy canyon as a great way to spend a winter afternoon in Jasper. " But it's not for everyone ..." cautions Dale Diduck, a veteran local climber and owner of Gravity Gear , Jasper's ice-climbing outfitting store. " It can be quite dangerous ." Those dangers include falling ice and self-injury with the sharp tools required for climbing - and, of course, falling. But for those that dare, ice climbing is an exhilarating sport - if you can call it that. "There's more to it than a game," says Diduck. "It's an experience, I guess. " Ice climbing has grown in popularity in recent years along with summer climbing, where most ice climbers start out. "It's amazing how many ice climbers are coming out of the woodwork," Diduck says. And while ice-climbing may be for the hard-core, that doesn't necessarily mean it's just for the young. "I met a guy of 65 out there on hard ice. I was just floored," Diduck recalls. Jasper hot-spots for ice climbs include Maligne Canyon and the famous " Weeping Wall " on the Icefields Parkway south of Saskatchewan River Crossing. Store such as Gravity Gear rent ice-climbing equipment as a try-before-you-buy venture. Guiding is also available and recommended: Gravity Gear offers referrals to local guides certified by the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (
